Objectives
• After attending this session you will be able to:– Compare Web 1.0 (Push) and Web 2.0 (Pull)– List at least five major online/social media tools– Contrast the needs of adult learners to the capabilities of
online/social media – Select specific online/social media tools to help to facilitate each of
the ADDIE (Assess, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate) process stages
– Incorporate “lessons learned” from others who have applied new online/social media for professional purposes into your online/social media action plan
– Brainstorm scenarios where online/social media technologies may be incorporated for staff development

Hypothesis
• Social media – not just for kids. The world of commerce and even the government have jumped on board. Facebook was started by a Harvard student for students. Some businesses have started using social media to facilitate communication and employee learning.
• Social media is another tool, albeit potentially very powerful tool that supports most, almost all of the principles of adult learning.

Training and Education for Performance Improvement

Pedagogy vs. Androgogy
• Traditional nursing education based on principles of pedagogy
• My observation is that pedogogy is integrating more principles of androgogy.– e.g., group assignments and problem-based
learning
![Page 7: Online and Social Media for Staff Development](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081602/5552ff71b4c90584028b555f/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Adult Learner Characteristics
• Have real-life experience• Prefer problem-centered learning• Are continuous learners• Have varied learning styles• Have responsibilities beyond the training situation• Expect learning to be meaningful• Prefer to manage their own learning• [Need repetition]
Margaret Driscoll (1998)Based on work by Knowles (1998), Kidd (1973), Freire (1970), Merriam and Caffarella (1991)

Principles of Effective Facilitation
• Use learner’s experiences• Develop problem-centered programs• Involve learners in planning and evaluating• Develop interactive programs• Use multimedia elements in meaningful ways• Create a safe and respectful environment• Encourage exploration, action, and reflection• Nurture self-directed learning

Infusion Therapy Project
• Hospital wanted VAT nurses to have more time to perform advanced procedures. That meant floor nurses needed to start more IVs.
• Improve IV site monitor and maintenance practices.
• Increase proficiency in ER for identification, assessment, and care of implanted vascular access devices.

Assess
• Problem identification• Interview key stakeholders• Written surveys– Staff nurses and nurse managers– Tabulate data and analyze
• Report results to nursing leadership• Make recommendations to nursing leadership

Design and Develop
• Three-phase plan to cover all the needs– New Hire Orientation Training– Train-the-Trainer program for Vascular Access Devices– Hands-On Training for starting peripheral IVs
• Subject matter derived from – Literature review– Two subject matter experts assigned from Vascular Access
Team• Very difficult to get their time and attention
• Program assessment and development very time intensive

Web 1.0 vs. Web 2.0
• Push• One-way
communication• Linear• Less dynamic• Somewhat predictable• Neat• Little maintenance
• Pull• Multi-directional
communication• Non-linear • Highly dynamic• Far less predictable• Messy• Requires care and
feeding
