One-on-Ones are the

Heartbeat of Managing

Make Them Your Weekly Practice

Page 2: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Did you know…

…management is like yoga practice?

Page 3: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

That’s because there’s

not one thing you

do as a manager and

then suddenly

everything is okay.

Page 4: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Management is

a series of

small actions

you do.

Page 5: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Some you do

daily, some

weekly, some

monthly etc.

Page 6: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

That’s why management is a practice

like a yoga practice – you do the work

and you get the results

Page 7: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

It’s not about

being

perfect.

Page 8: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

It’s not about trying to fix

everything in one go in the

annual performance review

Page 9: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

It’s about showing up

with the right

intentions and

getting the

work done

Page 10: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

What I’m going to

cover in this section

are some ways that a

regular one-on-one

practice is going to

help you because of

their rhythm.

Page 11: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

You know

how things

run

behind?

We get

distracted,

we forget

Page 12: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

This happens to you

and your employees

and then next thing the

important project is

delayed and over

budget

Page 13: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

But regular

one-on-ones

keep you and

your employees

on time

Page 14: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

It keeps your

employees on time

because let’s face it

even the best

employees do better

with a little follow up

and positive re-

enforcement

Page 15: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

And your tardy

employees

need follow

up like

oxygen

Page 16: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

And it’s not just

about keeping your

employees on time,

regular one-on-ones

keep bosses on

time too

Page 17: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Let’s face up to

the personal

responsibility

we have as a boss

to keep things

going forward

Page 18: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

I admit that without

some type of

drumbeat to keep

things moving

forward I let my

perfection

tendencies get the

better of deadlines

Page 19: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Not to mention

my own

distractions

and shoddy

memory

Page 20: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

I mean who are we

kidding – we are

probably just as bad as our employees when

it comes to deadlines

Page 21: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Regular one-on-

ones are how I

keep myself

on my toes

Page 22: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

And you know it’s true because:

when I get an action from a

meeting I hardly ever take care of

it immediately

Page 23: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

My excuse is

because it seems

like I spend my

whole day rushing

from one meeting to

the next

Page 24: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

And if you’re

anything like me, far

too many actions drift

until there is a

deadline

Page 25: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

So you could

say that

meetings

make work

happen

Page 26: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Because

there’s a

furious rush of

activity

clearing off

actions before

the next

meeting

Page 27: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

It’s not an ideal

situation and I’m not

proud to admit it, but I

know it’s reality

for a lot of people

Page 28: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

So my strange

combination of skills is that I’m a yoga teacher

and chartered accountant.

And to be good at yoga you

need to be good at a bunch

of different things…

Page 29: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

• You need to be flexible,

Page 30: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

• You need to be flexible,

• Have strength,

Page 31: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

• You need to be flexible,

• Have strength,

• You need balance plus focus,

Page 32: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

• You need to be flexible,

• Have strength,

• You need balance plus focus,

• Awareness of your body and,

Page 33: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

• You need to be flexible,

• Have strength,

• You need balance plus focus,

• Awareness of your body and,

• Breath control

Page 34: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

And how you get

good at these is

simple – you have

to practice

Page 35: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

And in this practice,

you practice each skill

and slowly get better

at the parts and you

get better at the

whole

Page 36: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Now being a

boss is similar –

there are certain

key skills

you need to

master

Page 37: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

These skills are so

important that I call

them the

Foundational

Management

Skills

Page 38: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing
Page 39: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

The

Cornerstones in

the Foundations

include such things

like..

Page 40: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

• Performance communication,

Page 41: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

• Performance communication,

• Employee development,

Page 42: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

• Performance communication,

• Employee development,

• Delegating and,

Page 43: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

• Performance communication,

• Employee development,

• Delegating and,

• Building functional relationships through one one-on-ones.

Page 44: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

And so it’s exciting

that you’ve started

your journey to be a

better boss by

improving your own

one-on-ones

Page 45: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

It’s not important

to be perfect, just that you do

the work and get

better

Page 46: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Secret Ninja Manager Trick

Time…

Page 47: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Some

managers don’t

think they have

the time for

regular one-on-

ones

Page 48: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Secret Ninja Manager Trick

But the

Is actually that one-on-ones save

you time

Page 49: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

When you miss them

you will find that you

end up spending

more time with

unscheduled

interruptions

Page 50: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

One –on-ones

save you time because you do

most of your

management

duties in one go

Page 51: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

They can also save

you all of those

annoying, non-urgent,

attention distracting

interruptions

Page 52: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

So a tip that will help

you save time it to

train yourself and

your employees to

save non-urgent

communications for the one-on-one

meeting

Page 53: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

So in this

section I gave

you a few

reasons why

one-on-ones

save you

time and keep

you on schedule

Page 54: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

And I talked about

the essential

manager skills that bosses need to

master

Page 55: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

I also shared

with you that

managing is a

practice

– what this

means to me is

two things…

Page 56: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

The first is that we

trust in the

process

Page 57: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

A single yoga

class isn’t going to

teach you how to

stand on your head

Page 58: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

And a single one-

on-one meeting isn’t

going to solve all

your problems

Page 59: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

Do your

practice and the results

will come

Page 60: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

The second is that no-one is

perfect.

Page 61: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

When I first started

one-on-ones, I was not

very good at them

and you initially won’t

be as good as you will

get

Page 62: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

The way to get better

is the practice

Page 63: One on Ones are the Heartbeat of Managing

And a Manager Zen technique that will help

you mentally come to

terms with this is that

you should expect

imperfection
