Building a Bright Future,

TogetherTABLE OF CONTENTS

We made great progress in 2016 in delivering on our aspiration to be the trusted mutual partner, delivering financial security how, when, and where our clients prefer. Our accomplishments were made possible by the hard work and collaboration of our employees and Field associates across the enterprise. It is this performance that sets us apart from our competitors and serves as the foundation of our continued growth.

The world around us is changing, and Guardian continues to evolve and grow to meet the needs of our customers. What remains constant is our belief in the values that define us – We Do the Right Thing, People Count, and We Hold Ourselves to Very High Standards. This balance – of maintaining our traditions and our stability as well as keeping current with developing trends and technologies – is a large part of what elevates Guardian above its peers.

Our company’s record-high earnings and dividend, growing capital base, and continued strong financial ratings show that we are consistently delivering the value and stability our customers expect from us. We grew our number of

employees in 2016, and found innovative ways to support our growing customer base through new and improved products. We are positioned to take advantage of new opportunities through our expanded operations in Canada and India and our acquisitions in growing markets.

The accomplishments highlighted in this magazine reflect the successful execution of many of our strategic priorities and foundational activities in 2016. These achievements were made possible by the talent of our people, who, on a daily basis, demonstrate leadership, innovation, and teamwork within our organization by thinking ahead and acting now.

The story of our growth journey to $2 billion continues to be written, and each of us will play a role in its outcome. I look forward to working with you and to building a bright future together.

PREFACE

United by Our Commitment to Serving More People

Guardian’s mission is clear: to grow our business in an ethical, profitable, and sustainable way, so that we can meet our long-term commitments, pay higher dividends, and ultimately serve more people.

Each of us plays an important role in bringing our mission to life through the work we do and the behaviors we demonstrate with each other, our customers, and the communities we serve. From enhancing the products and services we offer our customers and improving our environmental sustainability efforts to building a diverse, inclusive, and innovative workplace and making an impact in the community through strategic philanthropy, Guardian made significant progress in 2016 in demonstrating the time-tested values that have made us strong for more than 156 years.

Throughout the following five chapters, we take a closer look at some of our recent successes, and celebrate how we, as One Guardian, are continuously doing the right thing, embracing change, and delivering value to those we serve.

CHAPTER 1

Serving Customers How, When, and Where They PreferThe world is changing… and so is our business. We now serve more people – in more locations and through more channels – than ever before. From the rollout of enhanced online self-service capabilities for Individual Markets customers to the creation of the Direct to Consumer business to an expanded presence on social media, Guardian is getting closer to the customer.

We are making it easier than ever for new customers to learn more about us and for current customers to receive the high-quality service they’ve become accustomed to. We are preparing for changes in the regulatory environment, principally with regard to the Department of Labor’s Fiduciary Rule, and are improving processes and tools to better serve our customers and help our Financial Representatives grow their business.

Behind every change and every decision is our aspiration to be the trusted mutual partner, delivering financial security how, when, and where our clients prefer. Earlier this year, we reorganized our operating model, from multiple businesses delineated by product to two lines – Individual Markets and Group and Worksite Markets – that focus on the customers they serve.

Excellent customer service, continuous improvement, steadfastness of vision, and a culture that embraces change and innovation are what set us apart from our competitors and make us One Guardian.

In this chapter, we highlight some of the key accomplishments our businesses made in 2016 to help us get closer to the customer.

Customer Website Makes Account Management EasyGuardian’s IM Customer Website was first introduced to Annuity customers in 2012 and Life customers in 2014. Since its launch, the look and feel of the site has been enhanced to align with Guardian’s public website, and has recently expanded to support Disability insurance and Park Avenue Securities, creating a one-stop-shop for Individual Markets customers.

The newly updated site offers its users a variety of benefits, such as user-friendly navigation and a complete, organized view of account information. The site also provides customers with several easy-to-use self-service options, such as ePay, access to view and download customer service forms, and enrollment in e-delivery statements. The site is available in both web and mobile versions, providing increased customer accessibility.

Since enhancing the site to support our Individual Life policyholders in May 2014, more than 33,000 Life clients representing over 53,000 policies have registered. The feedback has been overwhelming positive. Clients enjoy 24/7 access to their policy information – a delivery on the top-trending request to add e-payment capabilities to their plans.

E-Services Enhance Customers’ Ease of Doing BusinessAs part of Guardian’s commitment to providing its Individual Markets customers with an outstanding experience, our company offers a full suite of self-service features enabling them to sign, save, and pay for policies with just one click.

INDIVIDUAL MARKETS Easy + Electronic = Customer Satisfaction. New in 2016.E-APP AND E-SIGN EXTENDED TO LIFE CUSTOMERS

Guardian’s e-App and e-Sign features work together to enable straight-through processing by creating an electronic delivery process to significantly reduce application processing time and eliminate the need to acquire “wet signatures.” These free services, which were first introduced to Guardian’s Disability customers in 2013, are a clear differentiator for our Field representatives, helping them to improve speed and convenience for their customers.

E-SIGNATURES FOR PARK AVENUE SECURITIES CUSTOMERS

PAS customers can now complete transactions without a wet signature, enabling faster processing and increased ease of doing business.

EPOLICY DELIVERY

In 2016, Guardian introduced an electronic policy delivery service called ePolicy. This is a simple and secure solution that lets clients electronically sign, pay for, and save their new life or disability insurance policy in just four steps — whenever and wherever it’s convenient for them.

Once an application is approved, an email is sent to the customer with a link to the secure ePolicy website.

Through the ePolicy dashboard, Guardian’s agents track, manage, and deliver clients’ policies. ePolicy delivery averages a five day policy turnaround – versus an average of 32 days to deliver paper policies, increasing the overall customer experience.

“Providing value and an enhanced customer experience for all is key to us being known as a company that’s driven on being a great client resource.”

Positioning the Field to Successfully Adapt to the DOL Fiduciary RuleThe Department of Labor (DOL) Fiduciary Rule, parts of which will take effect in April 2017, creates both challenges and opportunities for today’s financial professionals.

To ensure that Guardian can adapt its business appropriately in a way that allows us to thrive in a changing environment, our company has assembled a team from across the organization to analyze the DOL Rule and develop strategies that address the rule’s new requirements, as we remain committed to offering a full suite of products to meet the needs and objectives of retirement clients.

Chris Dyrhaug, Senior Vice President and Head of Individual Markets Administration and Wealth Management, has been leading this team, which includes key members from Legal, Compliance, Operations, Business Development, Marketing, Communications, and Supervision as well as a group of Guardian General Agents (GAs) and Financial Representatives (FRs).

The DTC business further expands Guardian’s reach to mass market consumers of insurance products. Today, our digital storefront enables consumers to shop for and buy PPO and DHMO dental products, access their policy information, find a dentist, and download claims forms. In the future, the digital storefront will be expanded to offer consumers a variety of products beyond dental insurance and allow consumers to self-serve all of their needs digitally.

There is much more to come! Open enrollment for the public exchanges began on November 1,

2016, and demand for Guardian dental products is strong.

Consumers can purchase dental insurance directly from Guardian online in 30 states at mydental.guardianlife.com. Guardian also participates in public exchanges in 16 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.

Introducing a New Direct to Consumer BusinessWe’re not just getting close to the customer; we’re going directly to the customer! In late 2014, Guardian initiated a pilot program to bring our dental product offerings directly to the consumer through an online Guardian storefront and public exchanges. Based on consumer demand that far exceeded the pilot’s expectations, Group is looking to leverage this experience as a springboard for reaching additional customers and offering new products.

What is the Direct to Consumer DTC business?

“Based on our early in-market experience, we have an aggressive vision to position Guardian as a consumer-centric provider of a wide variety of protection products that support the needs and wants of consumers.”

Guardian’s Dental Business Is Continuously ExpandingWith more and more workers retiring, becoming self-employed, or receiving their primary health benefits from a government program such as Medicaid, the individual and government dental benefits markets are growing quickly and now comprise nearly 25% of the more than $60 billion dental benefits market. Guardian is keeping up with the latest trends by acquiring and building businesses that serve these targeted markets. One of Guardian’s strategic priorities is to diversify our business by expanding distribution to new, targeted customer segments, often through acquisitions that are complementary to our existing business platforms.

Our acquisition in 2014 of Premier Access and its affiliated companies, Data Telesis (now Guardian India) and Access Dental Services, meant that for the first time, Guardian would provide dental benefits under government programs such as Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance

Program (CHIP), we would administer individual dental products sold on the new health insurance exchanges, and we would support the servicing of these same customers in company managed dental offices.

In 2016 Guardian increased its investment in the government programs business through the acquisition of Avēsis, one of the leading administrators of vision, dental, and hearing benefits for government and commercial programs, with eight million members covered under Medicaid and the CHIP. Avēsis also brings to Guardian a proprietary network of optometrists and a group vision business. We are currently integrating the operations of Premier Access into Avēsis to create a consolidated platform that will serve both the government programs business as well as a lower cost, more simplified dental and vision portfolio for the commercial group insurance market.

In yet another move to expand our dental presence, Access Dental Services, Guardian’s Dental Support Organization (DSO), acquired STX Healthcare Management Services, a DSO with 43 offices in Texas and Alabama. Dental Support Organizations contract with dental practices to provide non-clincial business management and support services to local dentists. The creation of DSOs has allowed dentists to maximize their practice with the support of professional office management and efficient, centralized processes that allow the dentists to focus on the patient and deliver excellent dental care.

Access Dental Services (ADS) provides administrative, marketing, and customer support services in 65 dental centers in Alabama, California, Texas, and Utah. Originally an affiliate of Premier Access, ADS now operates as a stand-alone business with its own CEO and management team.

George adds that the cornerstone of high-quality dental service is patient safety, and that training will be a focus for ADS in 2017.

GROUP AND WORKSITE MARKETSS “If you think of the patient being at the center of our business model, everything we do should serve that patient. We’re looking at creating a ‘remarkable patient experience.’ We’ve actually developed a fairly comprehensive training program for the entire staff that starts from how you answer the phone and how you greet people when they walk in the door to how you coordinate their activities when they’re in the office and the follow-up with the patient.”

Everyone Plays a Role in Protecting Guardian’s ReputationAs Guardian works to get closer to the customer, protecting our company’s reputation remains a key priority for all of us. We look to accomplish this by maintaining high standards and doing what’s right for our customers, our employees, and the communities we serve. During 2016, employees had several opportunities to play a direct role in maintaining a strong culture of ethics, and reflect on the message that how we get things done is just as important as what we get done.

In 2016, all Guardian employees were asked to be curious! and ask questions if something does not feel right. (Now’s a good time to refresh your memory on the three easy steps you can take to stand up for integrity.)

Employees from almost every business and functional area engaged in dialogue with ethics expert David Gebler, author of The 3

Power Values: How Commitment, Integrity and Transparency Clear the Roadblocks to Performance, at their respective town hall meetings. Video excerpts of his remarks have been posted on the Ethics & Compliance at Guardian page on Inside Guardian. (If you haven’t already checked out these videos, you can do so now.)

Four leaders from Guardian’s Individual Markets business expressed their commitment to ethics and discussed how they handled ethical issues throughout their careers as part of a new video series – Doing What’s Right in the Real World – on Inside Guardian.

The members of our Executive Leadership Team added their voices to the dialogue on ethics by recording audio messages, which were delivered to all employees by voice mail and as podcasts posted on the Ethics & Compliance page.

CHAPTER 2

Building a Diverse & Inclusive CultureA diverse and inclusive environment is a key component of our ability to innovate and grow – and ultimately serve more people. Now more than ever, our company is focused on creating a culture that celebrates what makes each of us unique and better reflects the customers we do business with.

Diversity can be defined in many dimensions, ranging from an individual’s professional and personal experiences, to their ethnicity, gender, generation, and more. Inclusion comes to life in how we interact with each other. It requires that we seek to understand and respect different vantage points, while keeping an open mind. This means that employees can bring their best selves to work and customers can trust that we have their best interests at heart.

In this chapter, we celebrate some of the ways Guardian advanced its commitment to building a diverse and inclusive culture in 2016 and moved our organization forward.

Why Diversity & Inclusion? The case for a diverse and inclusive culture is far-reaching. Aside from retaining and attracting talent or business – diversity & inclusion (D&I) fulfills Guardian’s long-standing tradition of doing the right thing and remaining true to our core values.

In the past year, Guardian’s D&I Council put our core values into action through the development of policies, programs and platforms that empower employees, customers and the community to grow, thrive, and join the conversation.

The Year Started Off with a DayEarly in 2016, President and CEO Deanna Mulligan hosted the company’s first Diversity & Inclusion Day. The goal? To get everyone focused on building a collaborative, connected, diverse, and inclusive work environment.

Following a fireside chat by Deanna on the importance of Diversity & Inclusion, both at Guardian and in the marketplace, Kim Lear, founder and content director from Inlay Insights, facilitated an interactive discussion about generational differences in the workplace, including approaches to work and communication.

This topic matters because the multigenerational workforce is growing even more diverse. Millennials will soon comprise the largest demographic in the US workforce, surpassing 33% by 2020, while Baby Boomers are staying in the workforce longer than previous generations.

The D&I Day marked another first for Guardian with the launch of its first Employee Resource Group, the Women’s Leadership Network (WLN).

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are Guardian-recognized grassroots networks of employees who share a common identity, characteristic, and/or affiliation. They support employees in meeting professional and personal development goals, and are instrumental

in helping Guardian achieve its Diversity and Inclusion vision.

In being WLN members, women at Guardian have access to the networking events, professional development, and other resources they need to take their career to the next level. The WLN is also open to men, who can serve as the greatest advocates and allies when building greater gender-balance at all levels of leadership at Guardian.

Doing Right by Our Community & Our PartnersOur commitment to D&I extends beyond the walls of Guardian as we do right by our community and vendor partners.

Guardian has also supported the LGBTQ and veterans communities in multiple philanthropic ways, including:

Preparing 41,000 Meal Kits for Homeless LGBT Youth

OneOrlando Fund Donation for Nightclub Shooting Victims

Assembling 500 Military Care Packages through Operation Gratitude

Since our efforts extend to those we do business with, Guardian’s Supplier Diversity program, established in 2012, offers a diverse slate of suppliers open access to, and the chance to participate in, the firm’s procurement process.

From 2012 to 2015, the number of diverse suppliers we do business with has grown 23%, with our total diverse spend jumping 83%.

Attracting New Talent + New BusinessWOMEN PRODUCERS’ SUMMIT

Guardian’s annual Women Producers’ Summit brings together approximately 100 female producers across all tenures and geographic locations. Attracting, developing and retaining a diverse agency distribution system is critical for our company’s success and relevance in local marketplaces.

JOB FAIRS

We have also stepped up efforts at diverse job fairs, including LGBTQ professionals and those sponsored by veterans’ organizations, to attract a more heterogeneous workforce.

LADDERS FOR LEADERS

Our participation at the Mayor’s Ladders for Leaders event was another step toward demonstrating our commitment to diversity, as we provided approximately 20 internship opportunities to New York City high school students. In fact, Guardian is a founding partner of the NYC Center for Youth Employment.

LGBTQ RECRUITMENT

As a way to attract new business, we created new LGBTQ-focused marketing materials for our Field Representatives. These materials ranged from customer stories to thought leadership articles about financial planning.

Topped the Year Off with a Perfect ScoreAll of these D&I efforts were made possible by the commitment and engagement of Guardian colleagues. We feel proud to have our efforts recognized by an organization as well-respected as the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

HRC’s 2017 Corporate Equality Index is a national benchmarking survey that evaluates corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ workplace equality, including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive healthcare benefits, competency programs, and public engagement with the LGBTQ community.

Guardian actively participated for the first time in the HRC CEI in 2016, receiving a score of 75. This year, we accomplished our goal of increasing our score from 75 to 100, an important milestone for our company.

The new year promises to move us further on our journey with the continued expansion of our ERG community, and new policies, strategic initiatives, actions, and conversations that remind us that we each bring something unique to the team.

We’ll also keep in mind that while we celebrate our differences, we also share a common vision, and we’re stronger together as One Guardian.

In its annual report, the HRC gave Guardian a perfect score on the Corporate Equality Index (CEI) and named us one of the 2017 Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality.

CHAPTER 3

Integrating Sustainability into Our BusinessGuardian’s mission is to grow our business in an ethical, profitable, and sustainable way, so that we can meet our long-term commitments, pay higher dividends, and ultimately serve more people. As part of this objective, our company is embracing a spirit of continuous improvement, taking a closer look at existing strategies, processes, and technologies, and exploring potential new approaches to ensure our people are positioned for success.

Sustainability is a term we hear of more and more, as today’s companies look for ways to balance long-term economic, ecological, social, and lifestyle needs in the way they do business.

Through business driven initiatives that drive greater efficiencies, reduce costs, and enable us to provide better service to our customers, Guardian has taken meaningful action to improve our environmental sustainability.

In this chapter, we will explore some of the ways Guardian is advancing its sustainability efforts.

New Green InitiativesEnterprise Managed Print & MoreIn 2016, Guardian improved its environmental sustainability efforts through energy reduction and efficiency initiatives, reducing paper consumption, and recycling.

Guardian’s Technology department spent a great deal of 2016 implementing a solution, which they refer to as Enterprise Managed Print Service, that delivers improved service while generating cost savings and reducing Guardian’s carbon footprint. The rollout of new technology has helped Guardian become a more sustainable business, significantly reducing the amount of printer related waste, and providing useful functions like on-demand release of jobs – meaning you’ll never send a job to the wrong printer again.

When it comes to Guardian’s conferences and events, we continue to take meaningful steps to reduce our environmental footprint and give back to our communities. More than half of the events we host are now replacing paper presentations with digital versions through use of the Guardian App. We also use MiiR water bottles at every Guardian conference as an alternative to traditional plastic bottles, reducing our plastic bottle consumption by ~7,000 units. Every MiiR bottle purchased provides clean drinking water to one person in need for one year.

Tracking and reporting data on internal resource usage and costs steers us in the desired direction and allows us to focus in on the green initiatives. Sustainability ReportThe Sustainability Module in Guardian’s Community Involvement Portal provides tools to set goals, track impact, and learn about everyday opportunities for sustainable living. Since the launch of the portal in 2016, we have seen measurable results.

“Throughout 2016, we have been focusing our sustainability efforts on environmental stewardship, driven not only by the priorities of our business but also by the passion and commitment of our employees. We cannot do this alone; everyone has a role to play. Joining a local Green Team is one way employees can raise their hands and partner with us. That is just the beginning. Over the next few years, we hope to provide more opportunities to our employees to help them get involved.”

CHAPTER 4

Reimagining How We Work at GuardianIn order to remain competitive in the marketplace, enhance work/life integration for our employees, and increase our ability to work collaboratively for the benefit of our customers, Guardian is reimagining how we work.

Through innovative workspace arrangements, technology enhancements, and new work practices, we seek to attract and retain the best talent, optimize our performance, leverage best practices, work smarter, and create a culture that embraces the future and all it has to offer. This is the essence of Guardian’s Workplace Strategy.

In this chapter, we showcase how we began to transform our company in 2016 by leveraging technology, changing how we work, and positioning employees to succeed.

WORKPLACE STRATEGY GOALS

l Support our employees’ best work, how, when and where it happens

l Better meet the expectations oftoday’s transforming workforce and tomorrow’s business demands

l Create a flexible and sustainable workenvironment to best serve our customers and each other

Optimizing How We WorkGuardian’s Workplace Strategy is aimed at optimizing how we work, giving us opportunities for greater flexibility, efficiency, and productivity. Our company has achieved this by rolling out state-of-the-art technology tools through the Office 365 platform, as well as by introducing modern space standards designed to provide a more collaborative and open work environment at Guardian, which bring greater consistency to our office space across all locations. The space standards are representative of the ongoing shift in the business world toward a brighter, more streamlined work environment that promotes more sharing among employees, while de-emphasizing the importance placed on offices.

Michelle Hampton, Manager, Online Strategy, Individual Markets, can personally testify to the benefits of Guardian’s Workplace Strategy and “Your Work Arrangement” policy. Working with her manager, Michelle set up a virtual office in her North Carolina home, enabling her to care for a family member without having to sacrifice her position at a company where she has invested more than 14 years of her life.

In the video above, Michelle expresses her appreciation for the ability to spend time with her ailing mother, enjoy her life, and continue doing the job she loves. By providing Michelle with the option to work off campus, Guardian was able to retain a highly regarded employee while demonstrating our evolving culture and the values that define who we are.

At the heart of the program is a new mindset: Think about work as what you do, not where you do it.

Guardian on the GoGreat Work Happens Everywhere

Guardian on the Go is a key component of our Workplace Strategy, focused on establishing a standard for flexible work solutions at Guardian. The program helps employees transition to, and work productively in, off campus and mobile work arrangements. It creates a seamless experience for our customers, and allows employees to develop and grow across geographies — positioning all of us to succeed, no matter where we are working on any given day.

Developed by a cross-functional team, Guardian on the Go provides a set of tools and resources that align with a three-step process – a set for managers and a set for employees – for making that transition to a non-traditional work arrangement.

Why Now?Around 50% of Guardian’s workforce will be eligible for some form of retirement over the next 10 years. When you think about that number in terms of turnover, you see that we have to attract new talent while we retain and support our existing employees.

“A recent Deloitte study showed that 56% of Millennials believe increased mobile working would improve their productivity, and they will choose employers based on what kind of work options are available for how, when, and where they work,” says Gina Birchall, Vice President, Strategic Initiatives. “And we’re even seeing it within our own Guardian population – on the latest employee engagement survey, the highest engagement scores came from that part of our population that self-reported that they were working in a combination of Guardian locations and from their home each week.”

“Striking the right balance between on campus, mobile campus, and off campus employees allows us to reduce both the size of our physical workplaces and focus our real estate strategy to ensure environmentally friendly office practices similar to our new Bethlehem campus. It’s a win for us and a win for the environment.”

DEAN DEL VECCHIOEVP, CIO AND HEAD OF ENTERPRISE SHARED SERVICES

In addition to helping us attract the right talent, Guardian on the Go supports our company’s mobility and sustainability goals.

How Does It Work?Employees will connect with their work instead of their space. And since many roles won’t be limited to particular locations, they will have more opportunities to build inspiring careers at Guardian. This added flexibility will help us to achieve our vision of attracting and retaining the best talent, and creating a culture that embraces all the future has to offer.

Guardian Opens New Bethlehem CampusGuardian took a huge step into the future with the opening of its new Bethlehem Campus in July 2016. The facility, which was developed in consultation with Guardian employees, is an important facet in our company’s Workplace Strategy – featuring a more streamlined work environment that makes employees feel good about where and how they work.

To commemorate the official opening of the new campus, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Thursday, July 14. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the village of Bethlehem formally declared this date as “Guardian Day.”

Guardian’s President and Chief Executive Officer Deanna Mulligan and Board of Directors member John A. Somers were joined by Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Mike Stack, State Senator Mario Scavello, State Representative Marcia Hahn, Executive Deputy Insurance Commissioner Seth Mendelsohn, and the Hanover Township Board of Supervisors for the ribbon cutting, which was witnessed by many of the more than 1,400 employees who now call the state-of-the-art facility home.

“As one of the largest employers in the area, it is our hope that this new office complex will help us continue to attract talent from our local community by raising the bar on what employees should expect from their workplace.”

Money Management for LifeSince 2013, Guardian’s signature program – Money Management for Life (MMFL) – has created alliances with community colleges across the country to offer a free, for-credit personal finance course to help educate students with the essential skills and knowledge to manage their own finances and plan for their educational and financial futures.

In 2016, Guardian tripled its investment in MMFL, aiming to expand the breadth and depth of the program. In addition to offering the personal finance course at a larger number of campuses around the country, Guardian and its community college partners have expanded this valuable educational offering to a wider audience in a variety of ways, including for-credit and non-credit classes, walk-in centers, college credit classes for high school students, and virtual and distance learning.

“Increased financial literacy helps our students remove barriers to success by giving them the knowledge and confidence they need. Once through the program, they continue to share what they learned as MMFL ambassadors with their families and friends.”

Employees in Action People Count is one of Guardian’s core values. From volunteering their personal time to incorporating community service into conferences and business meetings, our employees dedicate their experiences, skills, and ideas to help our company prosper and grow as a leading corporate citizen.

In 2016, Guardian formed employee groups in each of our regional home offices to help focus our efforts in our local communities. The Community Involvement Committees (CICs) are part of a strategic effort to leverage the time, talent, and expertise of our employees to make a difference in addressing some of the most pressing needs in the communities where we work. CIC leaders come from all departments in the company, and are responsible for developing relationships with leading nonprofits to help build Guardian’s civic profile in the community and to offer volunteer opportunities to our employees throughout the year.

Guardian also launched a new Community Involvement Portal,, a “one-stop shop” for all of our company’s employee-supported philanthropic initiatives – from volunteer opportunities in your local area, to employee charitable giving and personal sustainability tracking. The portal, which can be accessed through Inside Guardian, supports the work being done throughout the country by our CICs and Green Teams and includes many opportunities for employee action.

In 2016, Guardian launched employee-led Green Teams to engage and educate employees on company policies and environmentally-friendly behaviors, plan activities in support of company-wide efforts, and encourage employee participation in company activities and personal actions.

For 20 years, Guardian’s Pittsfield office has been operating an employee recognition program related to volunteerism. Employees nominate a charity they volunteer with to receive a $1,000 grant, with winners selected based on the employee’s service to the charity.

Building off this model, the Appleton, Bethlehem, New York, and Spokane Community Involvement Committees worked throughout 2016 to launch

recognition programs in those offices as well. In total, 24 employees were recognized in their local office and qualified their charity for a grant up to $1,000.
