ENDOSCOPYThe Sac State Department of Speech Pathology and Audi-ology has the equipment and faculty to provide videostro-boscopic examinations of the velopharyngeal port, laryn-gopharynx and larynx by both flexible nasoendoscopy and rigid endoscopy. Our endoscopy stack includes the 9200 C computer and 9400 Laryngeal Strobe by KayPentax.
This affords us the ability to print video stills as well as to record a full examination on a thumb drive for export and evaluation. We also conduct computer-assisted voice analyses with VisiPitch and the Nasometer for further objective measurements.

LANGUAGE AND LITERACYThe Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology continues to be a leader in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of language-based reading disorders.
In order to read and write, children must first develop solid language abilities, including a strong oral vocab-ulary and grammar comprehension. Reading and writ-ing also depend on auditory processing and compre-hension, phonological awareness, verbal expression, letter-sound correspondence, and fluent decoding skills. Speech and language therapy provides support for the development and growth of these skills, pro-moting children and adolescent’s ability to access their academic curriculum.
Our clinic offers comprehensive language-literacy evaluations conducted by student clinicians who, in collaboration with Clinical Instructors, determine ap-propriate recommendations and provide individual and small-group clinic-based sessions to individuals with language-based reading problems and developmental reading disabilities, including dyslexia.
NEURO SERVICE ALLiANCE (NeuroSA) is designed espe-cially for adults with acquired neurogenic communication and/or cognitive disorders. Within NeuroSA, a broad range of services are available including traditional therapy provided by supervised graduate clinicians, and a vari-ety of group-based programs provided by trained and supervised undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology.
This newly developed program includes a variety of op-portunities for persons with aphasia. These aphasia- friendly activities include conversation-based groups, Communication Recovery Groups-Sacramento (CRG-SAC), weekly Aphasia Book Club (ABC) meetings that are offered in English or Spanish, and a weekly art class that blends creativity and communication. Future growth within NeuroSA includes programs for persons and their signifi-cant others who are living with dementia, traumatic brain injury, and Parkinson’s disease. Finally, for those individu-als who may benefit from using smart phones, tablets and other devices, a future program, Creating Access with Tech-nology, will offer interested individuals with invaluable training and practice to support improved competence, confidence, and independence with technology.
Integrating interprofessional student learning, community service, and scholarly contributions.
In addition, our on-campus clinic provides exception-al individual speech and language therapy for those individuals of all ages who are experiencing neurogenic cognitive-communication deficits associated with stroke, brain injury, concussion, progressive disorders, and other neurological impairment. Therapy sessions are designed to maximize the cognitive and/or commu-nication abilities of individual clients and utilize broad communication or cognitive strategies. Our faculty provide expert knowledge and real-world experience to guide and support student clinicians, ensuring skillful therapy that is sensitive to the needs of each client.
