The local historical society calls Jerome the town “too strong todie.” Several times over its 130-year history, Jerome came

Forget hiking or biking up to Jerome. It’s a steepclimb from Cottonwood below. Motorcycles are the onlybikes you’ll see here. The town is a favorite stoppingoff spot for bikers. One’s legs will get a fair amountof stretching, once the car has been parked and bod-ies embark on an exploration of Jerome’s uniquetreasures.

The best place to begin a tour is at the former

Douglas Mansion, now known as the Jerome StateHistoric Site. Jimmy “Rawhide” Douglas grabbed onto a profitable copper mining investment that hispessimistic father had bypassed some thirty years ear-lier. Douglas bought into the Little Daisy mine, whileanother operation, the United Verde, had alreadybecome the richest privately owned copper mine in theworld. Mining operations in Jerome ceased com-

pletely in 1953 after a number of stops and starts.During the mining town’s century or so of operations,a billion dollars’ worth of copper, and lesser amountsof gold, silver, zinc and lead were extracted fromCleopatra Hill.

The Douglas Mansion sits below the town ofJerome, enjoying sweeping Verde Valley vistas fromits eastern windows and a western view of thesteep streets where the hoi polloi went about theirdaily lives. The Little Daisy sits across from the sprawl-ing white adobe home. At this state historic site, orecars and mining tools stand sentinel along theexpanse of the mansion’s green lawn. The former car-riage house still shelters vintage modes of trans-portation, including the “surrey with the fringe ontop” used in the film production of “Oklahoma.”

Displays inside the mansion explain the historyof the copper mining explorations and more. Standat the floor-to-ceiling windows and imagine what itmight have been like to wake up each morning toA view of the Douglas mansion from a hill in Jerome.

A good place to start your tour is at the Jerome State Historic Park, located at the former Douglas mansion.

Jimmy “Rawhide” Douglas built his adobe mansion in 1916 and enjoyedpanoramic views of the Verde Valley below and the town of Jerome

immediately to the west.

such magnificent views. For a mere $2.50 entrancefee, it’s certainly worth the price and then some.

Jerome’s first smelter was built by the UnitedVerde Copper Company (UVCC) as early as 1883. Atthat time, 20 mule-team freight wagons traversed the7,700-foot Mingus Mountain to load and unload its pay-load. Ten years later, the UVCC built a narrow gaugerailroad to do the work. Buildings during that peri-od were built closely together and stacked above oneanother. Fires and mudslides claimed many of the rick-ety structures. Destructive fires in the mine pitsbelow ground also claimed lives and changed miningoperations to an open-pit process until the mother-lode was depleted by the 1950’s. Jerome’s up anddown streets reflect the conditions of copper’s pricefluctuations and the rise and fall of the town’s pop-ulation. Today, about 500 people call Jerome their home, and about 100 or so of them are artists.

Ore cars used in the Little Daisy mining operations, with a portion of theopen pit in the far distance.

We’re not surewhat happened

to the fringe, butthe surrey is theone used in the

film, “Oklahoma.”

Tourists can escape the heat of Cottonwood bytraveling up to the 5,000 ft. altitude level of Jerome, where temperatures are at least 15 degrees cooler andaverage a pleasant 71 degrees in summer. The bestway to see the town is to park the car in one of sev-eral public lots and walk around. More history infor-mation awaits at the Mining Museum in town, oper-ated by the local (and very active) Historical Society.Strangely, the Chamber of Commerce office, locatedin an old caboose-like structure, was closed on this busytourist day, but the Mining Museum offers a rea-sonably priced walking tour guide for those whomight want to know what they are looking at.

Downhill from the Chamber office and just belowa parking area one can see the cement roof of Jerome’sfamous “sliding jail.” Walk down a the decline a lit-tle more to inspect the structure more closely. The oldjail now sits about 225 feet from its original locationknown as the Verde fault area. The reinforced concrete2-cell jail slowly shifted downhill after as series of dyna-mite explosions in the 1920’s, and was left to slide afterprisoners were moved to a new location. It has sincebeen stabilized in order to protect this saga of Jerome’spast.

A plaque marking the entire town as a registeredhistoric landmark is located on Main Street, andcloseby, an original smelter sits on display. Walkalong the stone walls and you will notice some pockmarks reminiscent of drilling explorations. For some,it can be easy to pretend that one has been carriedback in time while taking in the surroundings. Onemight expect to hear the tinny notes of a nickelodeon

The entire town is designated a National Historic Landmark.

In the foreground, the remains of the sliding jail (roof view). The cluster ofbuildings mid-ground are owned by the predecessor of the VVCC, Phelps

Dodge, and housed the former Mingus Union High School.

In the left foreground, the sliding jail clings to a cliff; in the background, the Douglas Mansion. One can get an idea of just how steep a town

Jerome actually is.

The 1882 blast furnace is on view in a park on Main Street.

drifting through the air, or imagine glimpsing a flir-ty come-hither gesture from an upper window of oneof the town’s former brothels. Prostitution was, at onetime, the second largest industry next to mininghere. Bar brawls? We hear that they still happenhere on occasion, but don’t expect to see the offend-ers wearing ten-gallon hats and spurs. Back in 1903,the New York Sun described Jerome as the “WickedestTown in the West.”

Reputed to be one of Arizona’s best restaurants, theHouse of Joy, now occupying a colorful space of bygonedays used by ladies of the night, requires reservationswell in advance. Months even. Sorry. We did not geta snapshot of the red-gartered leg kicking from thesecond story window marking this popular eatingestablishment.

Maybe next visit.Jerome offers an annual Tour of Homes the third

weekend of May. If you happen to be on your way toArizona about now, you may want to plan to visit.

Jerome’s mining “power plant,” a 15 horsepower engine used to operatecrushers, hoists, water pumps, and other pieces of machinery.

The engine looks over the town that mined a billion dollars’ worth of copper in its time.

Holy Family Catholic Church started in 1898 and built by miners and the Ladies Aid Society.

The Little Daisy Hotel and mine. The hotel was used as a boarding house for miners when it was built in 1918.

Jerome’s streets a steep and curvy. In the foreground, an old gasoline pump.

Today we highlightMarion (Shag) Shagdaiwho was awarded theSilver Star while fightingwith the 82nd AirborneDivision during the Battleof the Bulge in WorldWar II. As a Sergeant,he was sent out late atnight with a Private to actas a listening post a mileor so out of the platoon’sdefensive positions. Whenvoices were heard aroundsome camp fires. Shagsent the Private back toalert the Lieutenant andthe rest of the platoon. Tobe sure they weren’tfriendly forces, he yelledout “Who’s there?” Whenthey stood up silhouetted against the campfire, he sawthey were Germans and he opened up on them withhis Thompson sub-machine gun and he hit the dirtas they returned fire. After exhausting one clip fromhis Thompson, he tossed two grenades in the direc-tion of the German machine gun fire. AFter firing anoth-er clip, he did a hasty crawl back towards his platoonbefore the “Krauts” found out he was alone. In the earlymorning the lieutenant and the rest of the platoonreturned with Shag to the scene of the fire fight andfound two machine gun nests destroyed and seven oreight German bodies in or around two fox holes in thatarea that Shag alone was credited for. They followedthe German line of retreat from that area, but ranintro a much larger force and wisely returned totheir original defense line. Later they found out thatthe main German thrust had gone just to the west ofthem and both the 82nd, just north of Bastogne, and

101st Airborne holding Bastogne, were both cut off butheld out for almost a month in a cruelest of wintersuntil relieved.

Both the 82nd and the 101st received PresidentialUnit Citations for their heroic stand. After the “Bulge”was reduced, the 82nd and all other units poured intoGermany. Shag said they had ticketed the 82nd to takeBerlin, but General Eisenhower decided to consolidatetheir front and leave Berlin for the Russians. The“Ruskees” took Berlin but at a terrible cost to lives.Shag said, “I probably wouldn’t be here today if wehad to take Berlin.” Shag also received the Bronze Starand other French deco-rations in furtheractions.

After the war Shagreturned toPennsylvania where heworked for U.S. Steeluntil 1961 when hemoved to Michigan Cityand worked at the newMidwest Steel plant inBurns Harbor, until hisretirement in 1987. Heis married to his wife,Carolyn, since 1947 (54years) and raised adaughter who now livesin South Bend. The 4th grade class at Notre Dame School took arecent trip to Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, Indianaand took a step back in time to 1811. The group expe-rienced pioneer life by dipping candles, making

Johnnycakes, preparing logs for their cabins, learn-ing Indian sign language, and “blabbing” in a one-roomschoolhouse. This great learning project was part ofan Indiana history unit.

All Caitlin Cavanaugh and John Nygren

Auto Indiana Exhibit at Beverlyby Paula McHugh

May marks the time that the Beverly Shores Depotmuseum reopens.

This small yet impressive little building, whichthree years ago celebrated a rededication after exten-sive repairs, holds a collection of treasures inside. Itis well worth a trip over to see not only the perma-nent exhibits, but also the traveling exhibit on loanfrom the Indiana Historical Society.

“Auto Indiana: Celebrating the Automobile inIndiana” is a series of photos and other images thatexplore our State’s role in the formative stages of theautomotive industry. The Haynes horseless carriage,Stutz Bearcat, and Studebaker are highlighted as wellas less familiar historical facts about the HoosierState’s role in luxury auto manufacturing. ClarkGable owned a Duesenberg, Mishawaka made theHummer, and Carl Fisher, co-founder of the IndianapolisSpeedway also developed the Lincoln Highway. Thosefacts and more are in the exhibit, and since it’s so close,it serves as a nice stopping-off point if you’re planningto do any touring around the Hoosier State in the nearfuture.

At one time, Indiana had more than 500 auto man-ufacturing plants scattered around the state. A largemap in the exhibit shows the former location of thosenow vanished plants. Because they were buildingprimarily luxury autos, the plants faltered and diedwhen less expensive automakers—General Motors andFord, for example, set up their plants across the bor-der in Michigan.

Kokomo’s Elwood Haynes is considered the “geniusbehind the oldest automobile in America,” accordingto writer/historian Ralph Gray. Haynes’ auto companywas one of the top 25 in the country by 1913. The “AutoIndiana” exhibit in Beverly Shores also has specialcopies for sale of the Indiana Historical Society’sspring ’94 Traces magazine that complements thedisplay.

Jim Morrow, one of seven members of the BeverlyShores Train Depot Committee, pointed out the dis-

Photos of theBeverly Shores Country Club, old brick fire station, elementary school and other businesses now longgone tell a tale of how many of the town’s historic build-ings are left only to memory and photographs today.Jim said that the state historical society would liketo house many of the vintage Beverly Shores itemsin its new Indianapolis museum.

“There is talk of a new major museum for theSouth Shore LineHeritage Foundationto be built within a 90mile stretch of theDepot. We would liketo be a subsidiary orbranch of that whenit is built,” Jim said, adding that theNational Lakeshoreowns 19 of the oldSouth Shore passen-ger cars.

Visiting Georgian Artist to Show W ork at Lakeside Gallery May 26by Charles McKelvy

Georgian artist LiaBagrationi, who is inresidence at theLakeside Studios fromApril 21 to May 31,and Three Oaks artistBruce Hawkins willunveil their recentwork in a two-personshow at the LakesideGallery on May 26from 3 to 8 p.m.(Michigan Time).

The gallery is locat-ed at 15486 Red ArrowHighway in Lakeside.

Gallery directorJohn E. Wilson said

Bagrationi will show ceramic works created duringher residency at the nearby Lakeside Studio, andHawkins, who has a studio in downtown Three Oaks, will display recent photo engravings and etchings.

“Bruce Hawkins is an exceptional local artist, andI love his work, so it was only natural that we includ-ed him in the show with Lia Bagrationi on May 26.”

Wilson said his father John D. Wilson first start-ed having international artists in residence at the stu-dios in 1987. Lia Bagrationi’s stay with the Wilson’sis a continuation of that tradition that was deferredwhen they were running the Art Expo in Chicago.

“With Art Expo behind us, we’re now getting backinto hosting international artists in Lakeside, includ-ing French film-maker and photographer ChristianMonnier who will be showing his photography at thegallery and a short film called “People” at the VickersTheatre in Three Oaks at a date to be announced inOctober,” Wilson said.

As for the two-person show on May 26, Wilsonpromised that there would be plenty of wine andcheese for all who attend.

“Plus,” he said, “we’ll all probably head down to thebeach after the show, and everyone is welcome tojoin us.”

The 43-year-old artist from Tbilisi, Georgia said shewill certainly be among the beach-goers on May 26because she grew up going to beautiful beaches on theBlack Sea.

Bagrationi, who graciously took time away from herclay and kiln on May 2 to sit for an interview, said shehas already fallen in love with southwest Michiganbecause it reminds her so much of her native land.

“Only in Georgia, you can sit on the beach in yourbathing suit and look back at the Caucasus Mountainswith snow on their peaks. In Georgia, we have every-thing — desert, mountains, sub-tropical areas, beau-

tiful beaches, and we are famous for our wine and tea,”Bagrationi said.

However, she added, the independent countrywhich emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Unionhas endured an ongoing litany of social and economicwoes, including hyper-inflation and unreliable elec-tric power.

“In the winter we are lucky to get four hours of elec-tricity a day, and in the summer we get slightly more,so this is very difficult for a ceramic artist whodepends on a kiln working properly. That’s why I want-ed to come here — for the quiet and for the reliableelectricity.”

Lia Bagrationi.

Lakeside Studio founder John D. Wilson, who satin on the the interview, said that the former SovietRepublic of Georgia is also famous for artists likeBagrationi. Noting that she recently won the GrandPrix at a major art competition in Georgia in December,2000, the senior Wilson said he was able to bring herto Michigan through the support of the internation-ally renowned Georgian artist, George Yashvily.

“I was bringing Russian artists over here backwhen Ronald Reagan was calling the Soviet Union the‘evil empire’ and I first met George Yashvily at the SovietArtists Union in Moscow. It was at the studio ofanother Georgian artist, Zurab Tseretely, whose workwas blessed in the old USSR. When you went to din-ner at his house in Moscow you rubbed elbows withthe head of the KGB and the director of the SmithsonianInstitution in Washington. At a time when nobodyhad a car in Russia, he had two Mercedes.”

Wilson said he became good friends with GeorgeYashvily over the years and, as a result, was last year

made an “honored and eternal member” of the GeorgianArtists Union.

When Wilson then asked Yashvily to recommenda Georgian artist for a residency in Lakeside, Yashvilycited Bagrationi as a worthy representative of the vibrantart scene in Georgia.

Bagrationi said the arts may in fact be the economicsalvation of her country, and that is why she was sokeen to come to America.

“It’s hard to support yourself as an artist in Georgia,so many have to have another job to survive, but it’shard for everyone in Georgia now. But in Georgia wehave lots of working artists, especially in ceramics andpainting, and they’re doing really good stuff and hav-ing exhibitions all the time. But what we need is inter-national promotion, and that’s why I’m here,” Bagrationisaid.

She was able to pay her own way, thanks largelyto the fact her husband, Temur Phichkhaia, is a suc-cessful entrepreneur in Georgia, but she is deter-mined to produce and sell as much art as possible whileshe is here.

As for her inspiration, Bagrationi said she is look-ing to “rocks and trees because they are universal themesand you certainly have many beautiful rocks andtrees here.”

She is also inspired by the rich history of herancient homeland which Georgians call Sakartvelo.

“Sakartvelo was established as a country threecenturies before Christ. We have had our own writ-ten language since the 5th Century, and we havebeen the crossroads of many empires including Romeand Persia. I am especially influenced by GreekMythology and by the ancient kings of Georgia whoare always depicted riding off to battle on horse-back,” she said.

Be assured that some striking centaurs will beincluded among her work on May 26 from 3 to 8 p.m.at the Lakeside Gallery at 15486 Red Arrow Highwayin Lakeside. Phone: 616/469-4422 for more information.

At Lakeside Studio, Lisa explains how each work of ceramic art begins with a preliminary sketch.

CyberScribblesby Paula McHugh

Last month I listed a few grandparenting sites, includ-ing www.igrandparenting.com. I had heard a rumorthat the site was folding, but as of this writing it isstill online.

I got an e-mail from the Smith family of LongBeach who recommended another neat site for grand-parents: www.grandtrvl.com. If ever you were consideringtaking a learning trip with your grandchildren, thisis a great jumping off place. The company, out ofChevy Chase, MD, lists tours planned just for you andyour grandkids. Their philosophy is allowing grand-parents to resume their historical place as mentorsfor their grandkids, and what better way to learn togeth-er than to take a pre-arranged tour together? Wethank the Smiths for leading us to this site.

Another site that has a forum for discussions aboutgrandparenting is at www.thirdage.com. Look forthe discussion board under the general heading “fam-ily and friends,” and you will be led to the grandparentingtopic boards.

I attempted to do a simple search of grandparent-ing sites via the Northern Lights search engine. A bigcaveat, here: don’t try it. I think I typed in “grandparents”in the search box. The first six to ten sites that cameback were suspicious, and I did not click on them. WhenI read the brief description of the sites’ contents, they all suggested pornographic materials. I wasreally taken aback. My experience points out theneed for surfers to really read the descriptions ofthe sites that a search engine finds for you. Sometimesyou can get an idea of the kind of site by reading itsurl. Often, but certainly not always, the url will have“erotica” or “porno” in its address. So be warned, especially if you are in search of family-friendly sites.

Now, a few words about building personal websites. There are numerous free web-building sites to choosefrom, and I have tried two of them. My first attemptwas at www.homestead.com exactly one year ago. Ittook me a long time to figure out how to use the edit-ing tools, and loading the homestead pagebuilderreally strained my computer. After putting together2 or 3 pages, my computer would lock up in the mid-dle of some important task. I found the process veryfrustrating and the final product less than desir-able. Don’t get me wrong—I have seen some very fine

Bigstep has two versions—free and paid. They offer the option of having their professionals buildyou an express site (completed quickly) for a fee, andother tools helpful in running your business on theWeb. I have used the free tools for my purposes, andthey include reports on how often visitors have vis-ited your site, average number of page clicks, and howthey found your site. Among the free tools is a surveygrid, which I use for quizzes. They also have sever-al catalog merchandise templates, and a template formaking a newsletter. While you won’t have the “ideal”url unless you register your own domain, you will havea shorter and an easier to remember (and type) urlthan the about.com or homestead.com homepageurls.

Finally, I invite you to visit my month-old website. It includes a link on the navigation bar directly to theBeacher, as well as other links within its pages. I havefound that updating the site takes a large amount oftime, and although I try to maintain the site week-ly, sometimes I just don’t get to it. Let’ s Take a Sunday Afternoon House and Garden T ourby Jan Van Ausdal

On Sunday afternoons in San Miguel de Allende,Mexico, the Biblioteca (Library) sponsors houseand garden tours. So come along with me, and we’llvisit four Colonial homes, all different but alldelightful.

We’ll meet at the library in the ground floor patiountil everyone planning to go on the tour arrives. While we’re waiting, we can read the Sunday paper, chat with other Americans and Canadians, andhave cookies and coffee. We can sit at the patiofountain or under a table umbrella to avoid thesun.

Then it’s time to board the buses with the groupof approximately two hundred people and we’re onour way! We go around the edge of the city to avoidthe Sunday traffic in the center of the city.

House and garden tour participants sit on the library fountain.

House #1

At the home of Pepe and Maruja Garay, we find atour guide to answer any questions. Our smilinghost is in his living room where there are many

books. In a family room area, we see rattan furniturewith many green plants.

House #2Pepe Garay in his living room. The Garay family room.

The second home extends from one streetto another and is over two hundred yearsold. The owners are Marisa and IgnacioReyes Retana. She owns a leather bou-tique and he is a prestigious San Miguel attor-ney. In the entryway, there are a number ofsaddles over a post. The living room has oldpaintings and other works of art. The verylarge dining room still contains the originalflooring. Colorful tile covers the floor andmost of the walls in the kitchen. Ignacio’slaw library has a spiral staircase by whichthe upper level can be reached. In the gar-den is a 200 year-old pecan tree with alarge clump of mistletoe on an upper leftbranch. Saddles fill an entryway at Casa Reyes Retana.

There are books that you read to become moreinformed. There are books that you pick up justbecause someone suggested that you do. There are booksthat you read to remember. There are books thatyou read because you’ll never forget. There are booksto pass the time, the miles, and the distance. Thereare books to tell you how to do things, how to makesthings, and how to become things. There are books thatattempt to tell you who you are. There are booksthat you read because you are who you are. Then thereare books that transcend all of the above categories. They pass the time, they help you remember, they chal-lenge you not to forget, they instruct you, and theyencourage you.

One such book is Moments of Truth, a collection ofstories shared by well-known and not so well knowncontemporaries. They include personal reflectionsby such noted persons as Bill Parcells, Celine Dion, and Sen. John McCain. The stories were compiled byTony Wainwright and Mike Celizic, after Wainwrightexperienced his own “moment of truth” and realizedthat such an experience was not uncommon. As Iread through its pages, I was struck by the honestyof this book and that of its author. The stories inspirewith simple courage, not the kind that makes it ontomovie screens or the evening news. These are not moun-tain climbing, death defying, swimming throughshark infested water types of stories. They aremoments when ordinary people became extraordinary, not because of what they did, but how they did it.

Wainwright defines a “moment of truth” as “a clearand undeniable point in time when [one confronts] acrisis and [is] forced to make decisions that [define]

the rest of [one’s] life.” They are moments when youfind yourself backed into a corner and you mustdecide which way you are going to come out swing-ing, if at all. What all the stories and their subjectsshare is a moment of decision, when each individualhad to decide if they were content with what they weredoing and how they were doing it. Why were they pur-suing a certain path? What propelled them? What com-pelled them?

These are questions that arise for all of us. The trou-ble is that so often we choose not to answer them becausewe don’t want to face the truth. We avoid momentsof truth to avoid realizing that we are, in fact, goingthe wrong way. But going the wrong way does not alwaysmean that you are wrong; it just means that there isa better route for you to take. There is a greater pur-pose that you can serve. There is another path.

Now this may all sound much too “touchy feely, let’sall give each other a hug and say something niceabout each other.” And maybe it is. But don’t we allneed that sometimes? There are too few critiquesand not enough affirmations. There are too manypeople barking orders rather than giving directions. There is a difference between telling someone whatto do and showing someone what to do, telling some-one where to go and showing someone where to go.

Moments of Truth shows us what and how weshould approach our own difficult moments and life-changing decisions, by allowing those who have facedthe same to demonstrate how they did it. And theydidn’t all get it right the first time. Very few do.

We should all find comfort and courage in thattruth.
