Towards a RE(DE)FINERY implementation for Green Chemicals, Fuels and Energy

The conversion of lignocellulose into chemical building blocks and

biofuels

INVESTMENTS “The eight-pack”

The ingredients for success:

Large scale 1st gen biorefineries Industrial size 2nd gen ethanol plants Integrated industrial clusters Scalability e.g. P&P industry Biomass availability & Logistics Outlets for pure and mixed C5/C6 sugars Outlets for Lignin NREL public domain info TEE model validation [Corbion / AN / DSM]

Biomass Availability & Logistics

Recently issued action plan:Strengthening of the industry cluster Rotterdam – Moerdijk with a 2-track approach

1. A short term optimisation track usingmaterial and energy integrationpossibilities

2. A medium term innovation track based on biorefining of 2nd gen biomass, ‘decarbonisation’ and renewable electricity

Biorefinery is the heart of REDEFINERY

Biorefinery is owned by:• Investors• Corporations• Public sector

Biorefinery:• Converts lignocellulose to sugars and

lignin• Delivers utilities: steam, electricity and

(waste) water (treatment)• Supplies logistics and procurement of

raw materials

Other fringe benefits of colocation:• Safety management• Risk management• Co-buying of chemicals• Maintenance• People management

The ingredients for success:

Large scale 1st gen biorefineries Industrial size 2nd gen ethanol plants Integrated industrial clusters Scalability e.g. P&P industry Biomass availability & Logistics Outlets for pure and mixed C5/C6 sugars Outlets for Lignin – topic of today NREL public domain info TEE model validation [Corbion / AN / DSM]

Transfer prices Study on costs distribution among the final products, lignin and sugars, for Central plant;

Project feasibility: net present value of zero at year 10, IRR 12 %;

Fixed wood pellet price of 130 €/t (100% ds).

The Biorefinery will maximise its profit by wanting to sell lignin @ high valorisation.

Our message today:

Via P&P plus large scale Biorefineries for Green Chemicals, Fuels and Energy large amounts of

lignin are expected…. and we need it !

Valorization is a function of the quality of the lignin, largely determined by biomass feedstock

and pre-treatment technology used
