Kia Ora,
Union Meetings – It’s all about what your children deserve
I want to begin by saying thank you all so much for the
support you showed my staff by picking up your children early
last week so that they could attend a Union Meeting. The
reason why staff attended this meeting was to support your
children and their future in our education system. We are so
passionate about your children (our children), and want them
to receive the best education that they deserve.
At the moment, all schools are not attracting or keeping
excellent teachers and principals in them. There are schools
across New Zealand who do not have teachers in every
classroom, or principals to lead them. There are schools that
do not have the staffing to help provide our children with the
extra support that they need. We are taking this really
seriously.
In August on the 15th teachers and principals across New
Zealand will be showing how serious they are about your
children by striking. We are going to be proving how important
your children are to us, and how much we want them to have
the best education they can. Once I know the strike details, I
will let you know.
Reports
I hope you got to learn more about your children through the
comments their teachers wrote in their reports. It is great to
learn how they are achieving in their math’s, reading and
writing, and also how UROCK they have been. What is
important in these reports (for you at home) is the advice and
guidance (next steps) that are included in these. By you taking
these small steps to support your children from home, you will
increase their chance of succeeding at school and into their
future. Thank you staff for preparing and producing these
reports. They are precious and kept for many, many years
after they have been written.
Kahikatea Speeches
Mrs. A and I judged the Year 5 & 6 speeches this year. We
were very impressed with all the finalists. Each student did
themselves proud, delivering their speech with confidence,
pride and sincerity. Everyone recited a poem called ‘Don’t
Quit’. Congratulations to our place getters. In the Year 5
category, 3rd Place = Le’Shaye Coker & Johnathon Alsop, 2nd
Place = Tevita Fakava, 1st Place = Kaydee Martin. In the Year 6
category, 3rd Place = Benjamin Pasley, 2nd Place = Amelie
Smith, 1st Place = Leyton Rewi. We will announce our overall
speech winner for 2018 at our prize giving in Term 4.
Term 4 – Teacher Only Day
Next term we have a Teachers Only Day on Friday 17th
August. On this day we have a well renowned teacher coming in
to support us so we can be the best teachers of writing we
can be. On this day your children do not have to come to
school.
Mr. Uesiliana (Wes) Va’ai-Wells
We will be welcoming our new Assistant Principal – Pa Wes to
our school next term. He will be joining our team in Week 5,
on Monday 20th August. We are all very excited about Pa Wes
coming to our school. He will be working closely alongside Mrs.
A, our Deputy Principal and me as he transitions into our
school. Wes has been teaching at Monrad Intermediate for
the past 11 years and is a Team Leader there. He comes to our
school with various strengths, which will compliment and add
to our school and community in a very positive way.
Congratulations Mr. Va’ai-Wells.
I wish you all a happy and safe holiday, and hope
Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award
Poasa received this award for:
Poasa Samuelu is a leader on the field and off.
He is a talented sportsman who plays a variety of sports. Even
when winning, he thinks nothing of sharing the ball with his team
mates; giving them the opportunity to score. He has done this
numerous times - when he could easily have scored goals
himself. He is always encouraging his peers on the court
or field. He is a supportive captain.
Academically, he loves a challenge. He works well with his peers
and will position himself, in class, to make the most of his
learning. When leading a group, he shows patience and
perseveres to support his team mates in understanding the
learning.
Happy Holidays I wish you all a happy and safe holiday, and hope you get to spend
some quality time together with whanau and friends. I also wish
all my staff a lovely holiday break and also hope that you have
time to relax, reflect and unwind.
Thank you.
Teena Johnson

He has joined the Pasifika Pride Student Leadership
Team and takes part in choreographing items for Pasifika Pride;
this has involved giving up a fair amount of lunch breaks which he
has done without complaint.
He has a happy disposition.

WE LOVE GYMNASTICS
The boy that cried Dog!
Written by Jah, Rua, Jayden and Mikalya Room 2
Once upon a time, in Palmerston North there was a little boy
that loved to go down to the Square. He liked having picnics
and watching the ducks. One Day he was bored. He thought
it would be fun to scare the people at the library. So he ran
into the library yelling “dogs, dogs! Dogs are chasing the
ducks". The people in the library ran out to help.
When they got to the square they realised they had been
tricked by the boy. The boy giggled and giggled. The people
were disappointed in him. Even the ducks were mad. Each
day the boy yelled out “dogs, dogs!” and each day they came
running. The people at the library warned him that the next
time they would ignore him. The boy was naughty so and
didn’t listen to the warning.
The next day the boy heard dogs growling at the ducks,
ferociously. “Oh no” he said “the poor ducks”. The boy
screamed “dogs, dogs!” He ran into the library “help help”
he called. “Shhhhhhhhh, this is a library” they replied “your
time is up”. The people in the library decided to ignore
them. The boy ran outside and sat by a tree. He was sad
because no one believed him. Then he reminded himself
never to lie again.
But what happened to the ducks you might ask... Well you
will just have to wait till the next episode.
