National Webinar On Organic Farming 2020 Organized by College of Agriculture, Balaghat Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur Website: www.jnkvv.org College of Agriculture, Balaghat, (Waraseoni) was established on 15th September, 2012 in the campus of Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS),Waraseoni, located 4 km away from city of Waraseoni on Waraseoni - Lalburra Road. The campus is popularly known as Murjhad Farm as the RARS is located near the village Murjhad. Geographically, the college is situated at 21°45’N Latitude 80°50’E Longitude with an elevation of 301.5 above mean sea level. The area comes under the Chhattisgarh Plains Agro Climatic Zone. The college is pioneer in development of extra early rice hybrids suitable for double cropping especially for rice fallow area. In the field of extension, college has developed close contact with the farmers of the area through ICAR- Farmers’ FIRST Project, ICAR project on promotion and expansion of Quinoa in rice fallow areas. In the year 2019, Peer Reviewing Committee of ICAR accredited the college with score of 3.01 out of 4.00 scales. Before the Green Revolution, it was feared that millions of People in India would die of hunger. However, the Green Revolution within a few years showed its impact with the introduction of new varieties, modern techniques of farming, chemical fertilizers, synthetic pesticides, germicides, herbicides and better management of seed. The country, which greatly relied on imports for its food supply, reduced its imports every passing year. In 1990s, India had surplus food grains that enabled the country to rise as an exporter of food grains. As the time went by, extensive dependence on chemical farming began to show its darker side. The land began to lose its fertility there by demanding larger quantities of fertilizers. As a consequence, the incidence of insect/pests and weeds increased resulting in evolution of resistant biotypes thereby putting pressure on the farmer’s side to use stronger and costlier pesticides. Due to increased cost of farming, farmers gradually fell into the trap of money lenders, who continuously exploited and forced many to quit. Realizing the dangerous consequences of chemical farming and increasing the concern for health related issues, there has been a paradigm shift in food preferences, which are now strongly tilted towards the organic products. Fortunately, climatic and socio- economic conditions of India favours organic farming and the potential can be harnessed simply by encouraging farmers and providing necessary market support. Agriculture has potential to accommodate and/or give employment to a large number of people. However, the present situation of the agriculture is very chaotic and forced to search out the solutions for producing safe and healthy food. In this issue, organic agriculture is getting wider recognition as sustainable alternative to chemical input based system. Although in the market place to provide clarity on the organic claim, the organic agriculture requires certification for the consideration as organic food. Thus the programme is proposed with the following objectives: Create new modules in organic farming for employment generation Curtail use of synthetic inputs in farming. Resolve issues of farmers/ producers/ stakeholders related to organic farming Develop linkages on organic produce among producers, markets and consumers. Simplify process on certification of organic produce Problems and perspectives in organic farming Sustainable employment generation after COVID 19 Opportunity for self sufficiency in the field through climate resilient farming Sustainable organic module for income generation after COVID 19 Use of ITKs and innovations in organic farming Market channels for organic produce Certification of organic inputs and products Role of ICT in creation of demand for organic food products and inputs
