ORGANIC FARMING

What is Organic Farming?

Organic farming is a technique, which involves cultivation of plants and rearing of animals in natural ways.

This process involves the use of biological materials, avoiding synthetic substances to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance thereby minimizing pollution and wastage.

01

Benefits of Organic Farming:

* Provides healthy food.

* Natural & tasty yields.

* Takes care of Environmental

cost concerns of farming.

* Reduce the of

production of farmers.

* Pollution of ground water is

stopped.

02

Benefits Of Organic Farming:

*Reduction of toxic substances in the environment.

*Provides Employment opportunities.

* Assisting the fight against climatic change.

* Preservation of the culture of Agriculture.

Types of organic farming:

1. Pure organic farming:

It involves the use of organic manures and biopesticides with complete avoidance of inorganic chemicals and pesticides.

2. Integrated organic farming:

It involves integrated nutrients management and integrated pest management.

It is the type of farming in which development of crops from natural resources having the complete nutritive value and manages to prevent the crop or plants from the pests.

3. Integration of different farming systems:

Integration of different farming systems involves several other components of farming such as poultry, mushroom production, goat rearing, and fishpond simultaneously with regular crop components.

Conventional Farming Vs Organic Farming

CONVENTIONAL FARMING

Conventional farming relies on chemical interventions to fight pests and weeds.

This type of farming sprays pesticides to get rid of pests.

Conventional farming uses chemical herbicides to manage weeds.

When raising animals, conventional farmers give animals antibiotics, growth hormones, and medications to spur growth and prevent disease.

ORGANIC FARMING

Organic farming relies on natural principles like biodiversity and composting instead to produce abundant food.

Organic farmers turn to insects and birds or traps.

This type of farming rotates crops, hand weeds or mulches.

Organic farmers feed their animals organic feed and allow them to roam. They also will make sure the animals have a balanced diet and clean housing.

Techniques in Organic Farming

Mulching: A mulch is a layer of something such as old leaves, small pieces of wood, or manure which is put on the soil round plants in order to protect them and help them to

grow.

Biofertilizer: Biofertilizers are substances that contain micro organism which when added to the soil increase its fertility and promotes plant growth. It comprises living organisms which include mycorrhizal fungi, blue-green

algae, and bacteria.

Crop rotation : It is the practice of growing two (or more) dissimilar type of crops in the same space in

sequence. Examples of types of crops that can be rotated include cereals and legumes, and deep-rooted and short-

rooted plants.

Techniques in Organic Farming

Green Manure: Green manuring is the practice of growing lush plants on the site into which we want to incorporate organic matter, then turning into the

soil while is still fresh.

Animal Husbandry: Animal husbandry is the branch of agriculture where animals are reared, bred and raised for meat, fiber, eggs, milk and other food products. It is the management and

care of animals in which the genetic qualities and behavior of animals are further developed for

profit.

Techniques in Organic FarmingSeed Treatment: Seed treatment refers to the

application of fungicide, insecticide, or a combination of both, to seeds so as to disinfect and

disinfect them from seed-borne or soil-borne pathogenic organisms and storage insects. It also refers to the subjecting of seeds to solar energy exposure, immersion in conditioned water, etc.

Vermi compost: Vermicomposting is the method of preparing enriched compost with

the use of earthworms. It is one of the easiest method to recycle agricultural wastes and to

produce quality compost.

Take photographs and make album.

Also mention the day along with date (For Ex: Day 1, Day 15, Day 30, 2 months etc.)

Note down the cost incurred for setting the Kitchen garden.

• Making Vermicompost.

How to make Vermi Compost at home?

• Make a dark house for the worms to live in. A wooden or plastic bin or another non-metal container. A bin 1.5 feet high x 2 feet deep x 3 feet wide is a good size for a household. Make drain holes near the bottom.

• Fill the bin with moist bedding. Bedding can be paper or newspaper shredded, leaves, straw, peat moss or sawdust. Make sure the bedding is kept very moist like a sponge. Change the bedding once or twice a year.

• Feed the worms.

• Yes! Fruit, vegetables, coffee grounds, bread, leaves.

• No! Milk, oil, eggs, meat, fat, dog or cat feces.

• Dig a hole in the bedding, dump the food in and cover it up with bedding. Pick a new spot each time you add food.

• Keep them damp and warm. Add water if the bedding feels dry, but make sure the excess water can drain away. Cover the bin with plastic or a tarp during freezing weather.

• While most kitchen scraps are fine to add to your compost bin, there are some items you have to avoid adding like:

• Cooked Food

• Food with sauces, oils or spices

• Dairy

• Meat Products

• It should be noted that citrus peels in large quantities may harm worms if they cause the bedding to become too acidic.

• To prepare the finished vermicompost for harvesting, move it all to one side of the bin and place fresh bedding in the other half. Add kitchen scraps to the new bedding exclusively.

• Use vermicompost to amend potting soil for both indoor and outdoor plants by adding 1 part worm compost to 4 parts soilless potting mix or simply sprinkle a thin layer around the base of container plants.
