Your ChoiceWith the presidential election nearly upon us, WGBH’s Frontline once again goes behind the headlines to bring you this year’s edition of The Choice.

The Choice 2016 (page 20) profiles Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, investigating what has shaped them, how they lead and why they’re running. “We go to 30,000 feet, look down and piece together a roadmap of their experience, identifying every moment of consequence,” says Michael Kirk, the award-winning Frontline filmmaker who has made three prior install-

ments of the election-year documentary. “Then we drop to ground level to connect the dots in a coherent, fascinating and fresh way.”

Kirk and his investigative team draw on dozens of interviews with those who know the candidates best—friends and family, advisors and adversaries—as well as authors, journalists and political insiders. What emerges is a deeply reported narrative arc of the candidates’ lives, side by side, with power-

ful new insights into who they are as people and politicians. You won’t find this kind of television reporting anywhere else. “I always

ask my team a key question—why? Why did the candidate do that? It’s the most important question you can ask, and it’s the hardest one to answer,” Kirk says. “You can’t answer it from a Donald Trump tweet, or a carefully choreo-graphed Hillary Clinton speech. You have to go deeper. You rarely get the ‘why’…That’s what Frontline is here to do.”

Leading up to the premiere of The Choice 2016, Frontline will debut a series of documentary shorts on its digital platforms, taking you inside key moments in each candidate’s past.

“The Choice is the history of the two people who aspire to the most powerful job in the world, and it’s a snapshot of where America is every four years,” Kirk says. “Whoever wins, we’ll be able to follow him or her through the first term with a better understanding of who they are.”

Every election year and every day, Frontline—nominated for 18 News and Documentary Emmy Awards in 2016—delivers in-depth, independent journalism that millions of Americans count on, thanks to your generous annual support.

School’s CoolIt’s a new school year with new lessons to learn on Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, including how to help each other, how to do your best, and how to solve a problem. Daniel has discovered that he’s allergic to peaches, and he tells Teacher Harriet, Katerina, Miss Elaina, O the Owl and Prince Wednesday. They help him avoid the fruit, and also take care of each other in different ways throughout the school day. On Fall Field Day, they try new games and learn about the importance of doing your best. When Daniel wants to play school at home, Baby Margaret is a reluctant student. But Daniel figures out a way that he and Margaret can have fun at “school” together. What’s on 2 and 44 Behind Pentagon WallsWhile most of the media coverage of Sept. 11, 2001, has focused on New York City and United Flight 93, the story of what happened inside the Pentagon on that tragic day has never truly been told…until now. Fifteen years after 9/11, this documenta-ry reveals new, first-hand accounts of the attack in which 184 people from inside the building and on board American Airlines Flight 77 perished. Changing the GameIn this election special, America by the Numbers tracks the link between popula-tion change and voting. “The racial, cultural and social landscape of America continues to change rapidly,” says Executive Producer Maria Hinojosa. “We need to pay attention to the grow-ing numbers of youth, Asians, Latinos, African Americans, persons of mixed race and immigrants who are registering to vote, becoming politically engaged, and increasingly, will be determining the outcomes of elec-tions.” Explore individual communities and demographic groups that are redefining the electoral landscape in 2016. America by the Numbers with Maria Hinojosa/The New DecidersTue, 9/6 at 10pm on WGBH 2

Keep Buggering OnMichael Gambon plays the greatest statesman of the 20th century in his most difficult hour: recovering from a debilitating stroke while hiding from the world. The movie-length drama is an adaptation of Jonathan Smith’s acclaimed 2015 novel, The Churchill Secret: KBO— the “KBO” standing for Winston Churchill’s favorite advice in the face of adversity: “keep buggering on.” The action opens in the summer of 1953. Churchill, 78, is prime minister for the second time and as pugnacious as ever—until he is felled by a severe stroke while hosting a state dinner. Lady Churchill manages to conceal the seriousness of her husband’s incapacity, and a young nurse is summoned to treat the apparently dying prime minister. Welsh ThrillerThe new noir crime drama Hinterland is set in the scenic, centuries-old town of Aberystwyth, Wales. The area is a natural crucible of colliding worlds—a place where history, myth and tradition come face-to-face with modern life—but its panoramic vistas and quaint facade hide

a multitude of sins. Into this realm steps the enigmatic DCI Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington, Poldark), a brilliant but troubled man on the run from his past. Together with his equally intelligent and complex partner DI Mared Rhys (Mali Harries, Foyle’s War), Mathias tackles mystifying murder cases that take you from the windswept sand dunes of the Welsh coastline to the badlands and beyond.HinterlandMon, 9/12 at 9pm on WGBX 44

Ross ReturnsNeither pestilence, starvation, nor betrayal can stop Ross Poldark from fighting for justice. Aidan Turner is back, along with Eleanor Tomlinson (Demelza) and Heida Reed (Elizabeth), in the popular romantic saga based on the novels by Winston Graham. At the start of Season 2, Ross stands accused of mur-der and “wrecking”—luring a cargo ship to the rocks for plunder. The judge is unsympathetic, hostile witnesses have been bribed and Ross appears headed for the gallows. It’s the first in a string of suspenseful episodes every bit as precipitous as the steep cliffs of Cornwall.Masterpiece/Poldark, Season 2Sun, 9/25 at 8pm on WGBH 2

Bringing You the WorldThe World Channel offers the best of PBS news and nonfiction programming, along with exclusive series like AfroPop, Global Voices, Voces and Pacific Heartbeat. World also produces such original series as Local, USA, featuring diverse

stories culled from public television stations and independent producers nationwide, and the award-winning America ReFramed, a showcase for independent films by and about communities of difference. Look for these World offerings in September.

Called to Duty Stephen Siller was a New York City firefighter whose life was cut short on Sept. 11, 2001. A father of five, Stephen was leaving work when he heard the call that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers. He turned his car around but got stuck in traffic in the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. He strapped

on his gear, began running through the tunnel and was picked up by Ground Zero-bound Engine 224. In the aftermath of the tragedy, his family formed the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation that has raised millions for those in need. This film is their story as well as Stephen’s.For the Love of their BrotherFri, 9/9 at 7pm

Fight for SurvivalEastside Memorial High School sits on an unassuming corner just east of Airport Boulevard in Austin, TX. The one-story building looks like a typical American high school. In fact, it’s been used as a movie set, cast for its timeless look. But the stories within its walls fall short of most cheerful Hollywood depictions of adolescence. Discover this underdog story of community mem-bers, teachers, administrators, parents and students fighting for the survival of their school, and by default, of their neighborhood. Eastside was given three years to meet state accountability standards, or be shuttered by the state for one year. Spend a semester on campus.Local, USA/Eastside EducationTue, 9/13 at 7:30pm

Takes a VillageFilmed in the hollows of Appala-chia, on native lands of the Upper Midwest and in West Coast migrant camps, Class of ’27 pres-ents distinct yet complementary personal stories from places too often ignored in America. Each of

the three portraits demonstrates that children from distressed communities, despite their circumstances, are more likely to grow into productive and civi-cally engaged adults if they receive support in their earliest years. Committed to supporting the children’s potential, each community is a place of hope, inspiration and resilience. America ReFramed/Class of ’27Tue, 9/13 at 8pm

DOC WORLD PremieresWorld Channel launches its new film series DOC WORLD this month with The Killing Fields of Dr. Haing S. Ngor, about arguably the most recognizable survivor of the Cambodian genocide, a man who became a worldwide ambassador for justice in his homeland, only to be murdered in a Los Angeles Chinatown alley—a case still muddled with conspiracy theories. Then Tocando la Luz (Touch the Light) weaves three stories—all set in the blind community of Havana, Cuba—into a tale of personal independence. As Lis, Mily, and Margarita each face family problems and heartbreak, their depen-dence on others turns out to be a double-edged sword. From the music halls

of Havana to a cinema club for the blind, their stories reveal both the pain and the joys of fighting for yourself.DOC WORLDThe Killing Fields of Dr. Haing S. NgorSun 9/18 at 10pmTocando la Luz (Touch the Light)Sun 9/25 at 10pm

Uneven Playing FieldFollow the ups and downs of the girls’ soccer team at Kelly High School, a public school in one of Chicago’s Hispanic neighborhoods. Kelly is struggling to provide the basics for its students—including a soccer field. Many do not make it to college, either because they cannot compete academically or because their families do not have the resources to send them. The players face problems at home, uncertain futures, discrimination and poverty. But they remain undaunted thanks to each other and the dedicated men-toring of their coach. Get an up-close look at the obstacles that low-income students confront in their quest for higher education.America ReFramed/In the Game Tue, 9/27 at 8pm

World is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American Public Television and WNET/New York in association with PBS and the National Educational Telecommunications Association.

Crossley Wins National Award WGBH News’ Callie Crossley took home top honors at the annual Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRNDI) Conference, held over the summer in St. Louis, MO. Crossley, host of Under the Radar on 89.7 and a

weekly commentator for WGBH News, took first place in the Commentary category for “Tomorrow Is Not Promised: Life After Hurricane Katrina,” marking the 10th anniversary of the storm.

For the second year in a row, Crossley’s work has been recognized nationally, as she also won last year’s National Association of Black Journalists Salute to

Excellence Award for “Observations on Ferguson: America’s Racial Ground Zero,” a compilation of her weekly commentaries. PRNDI Awards recognize the very best public radio reporting from across the country in a variety of categories. This year’s competition included more than 1,200 entries.

“Presenting well informed voices on local and global issues is a goal for 89.7 WGBH,” said Phil Redo, general manager for radio. “This story is yet another example of Callie’s signature voice: thoughtful and powerful. We’re all proud of Callie and I greatly look forward to hearing her thoughts every Monday morning.”

Next, the WGBH News team, led by Reilly, headed out for two weeks of on-the-ground reporting from the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in Cleveland and Philadelphia, respectively. Highlights included an interview with Ron Kaufman, the Republican National Committeeman from Massachusetts, about how the tone at this year’s RNC differed from the convention in 2012, and an exclusive interview with Jill Stein, the Green Party presidential hopeful who arrived unannounced at the Democratic National Convention to advocate for her candidacy.

99.5 WCRB

In Concert Is Here By Anthony Rudel 99.5 WCRB Station Manager

As we prepare to turn the page from summer to fall, WCRB is excited about the programming we have in store for you this month.

We will begin with a Labor Day Weekend filled with the great classical music you’ve come to expect from us. The unofficial last weekend of summer 2016 will be jam-packed with audience favorites, mixed in with “Great Lasts.” You can count on hearing legendary last symphonies such as Beethoven’s Ninth, Mozart’s Jupiter, Schubert’s Great and Dvorak’s New World; along with unforgettable last concertos and chamber music pieces. It’s our musical way of savoring summer’s last hurrah.

Now to the big news: WCRB is delighted to announce the debut of our new Sunday evening program: WCRB In Concert! The goal of this new weekly series is to bring you into the many concert halls and venues in and around the Boston area, and provide not only a front-row seat, but also a look behind the scenes.

Working with local music organizations and concert presenters, we will share a varied series of concerts, many of which will be augmented with interviews with the performers. The list of organizations that we are working with is too long to print here, but suffice it to say WCRB is thrilled to be fea-turing large, midsize and small ensembles. And what makes the project most exciting is the high quality of the musicians and music-making. The series will be produced by Brian McCreath and hosted by a different member of the WCRB team each week. The series premieres Sunday, Sept. 18, at 7pm, with a season preview hosted by Brian. Be sure to check out this column each month in Explore!, because it’s where I’ll be listing the lineup of In Concert performances.

And there’s more news with a local focus: During the week of September 12, our Symphony at 8 will feature a week of perfor-mances by the NEC Philharmonia, led by their Music Director Hugh Wolff (right). Maestro

Wolff will introduce each symphony with a brief comment about why he chose the work and what challenges the piece poses to a student orchestra, albeit one of the best in the world. It’s WCRB’s way of starting the school year, and we are proud to be working with the wonderful people at NEC.

But wait, there’s still more: September marks the return of our Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcasts from Symphony Hall. Host Ron Della Chiesa will bring you right into the hall for another season of live concerts, begin-ning with the gala opening concert of the 2016–2017 season Saturday, September 24. Music Director Andris

Nelsons (above) leads the orchestra in an all-Russian program that includes Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, and piano superstar Lang Lang joins for Prokofiev’s dynamic Third Piano Concerto.

WCRB is your ticket this month to enjoy the wealth of music that is always available here in Boston and beyond. When you can’t get to the halls, we’re delighted to bring the music to you. See you in October!

Corcoran says his own college internship very much influenced his career path, and that WCAI tries to give interns the best experience possible.

“I chose journalism as my profession after breaking a national news story while doing an internship in Washington DC, where some veteran jour-nalists helped coach and encourage me,” Corcoran says. “At WCAI, we also see educating future journalists as part of our responsibility. We don’t assign them to get coffee or make copies. Rather, we put them out into the field to collect sound, talk to people and build stories. I can proudly say that many of our former interns have gone on to work at top public radio stations and for national shows, while others are reporting from hot spots around the globe.”

As local journalism continues to erode in the internet era, WCAI remains committed to reporting on our community and informing listeners about what is happening right here where we live. And every summer, we welcome interns from around the country who come to WCAI ready to contribute to this effort.

“Robust, independent journalism is necessary in a democracy, and our interns are eager to do that work,” says WCAI News Director Sean Corcoran. “Most people are too busy trying to make a living and raise their families to exercise their rights under the First Amendment. They don’t have the time or inclination to call up public officials and ask questions, or to attend hours-long public meetings. So, we do it for them. By involving our interns, we help them understand that community journalism is both a privilege and a great responsibility.”

With the end of summer, we say goodbye to interns Angela Scionti (left), Elizabeth Pentikis and Savannah Maher. Elizabeth and Savannah will be heading back to Boston University and Dartmouth College, respectively, while Angela, a recent Keene State graduate, is just beginning her professional career in radio.

This summer they covered stories about the Cape Cod Baseball League; the use of genetically engineered mice to prevent tick-borne diseases; the
