FROM YOUR

PASTOR’S HEART

It has been a hot summer not only in Alderson but

throughout our country. We still have our hottest month of August to go! Of course with the heat of August comes the State Fair and preparations for going back to school. The cycle of our year moves ever forward at what seems to me to be an ever more rapid pace. I guess that’s one of the things about getting older. Our ministry activities have been both hot and fast this summer as well.

Work Teams - The UCC Southbury, CT work team did steamin’ good work at eight different sites throughout the Alderson area. A summary of their efforts appears on the facing page. The end of July brought two more sizzlin’ teams to town. One came from Oaklyn Baptist in NJ and the other from FBC Cleveland.

VBS – Vacation Bible School was heating up as this article was being written. Sincere thanks go to our director, Amanda Bowden, and her team of workers for an excellent SonSurf Bible School adventure. It was a blessing to see the children of our church and community having fun and learning about God’s love.

Summer Concerts – Our summer concert series continues to sizzle each Sunday night with another guest artist or group. We have four more concerts in August and one in September. See the details later in this newsletter. Thanks go to Donna Simms and the Music Team for their good work once again.

Don’t forget our annual church picnic which will be on Sunday evening August 29th at 5:30pm. It’ll be here before you know it. See you there!

The September Men’s Community Prayer Breakfast will be Saturday, September 3rd at 8am at Old Greenbrier Baptist Church.

Left Behind

A father was reading Bible stories to his young son. “The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city,” he said, “but his wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.”

The boy asked, “What happened to the flea?”

the sick and touched those with special needs in His culture. Further, three of the Standing Resolutions of the WVBC address the support of families.

The Specialized Family Care Program is sponsored by the staff department of Health and Human Resources. Since 1981 Specialized Family Care has been a placement option for children and adults who are intellectually and/or developmentally disabled, that provides a living arragnement in a family setting.

Those interested in providing specialized family care must be 21 years of age or older; may be married or single; couples must demonstrate that their relationship will provide an environment of stability; families must participate in training to include: CPR, basic first aid, and safety to include fire escape plan and drills; and must have a criminal background check completed. Providers receive monies to care for persons in their home and community. They also receive training and other supports to meet safety and other standards.

Although most of the people served by SFC providers are in a home full-time, there are people who receive temporary services, like weekends and evenings. SFC providers are available for longer periods of time, weeks or months when the primary caregiver has an extended emergency.
