REFLECTIONS ON OUR SUNDAY SCRIPTURES

THE WATERS OF BAPTISM When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repen-tance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the prom-ise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News.

PRAYER FOR PRIESTLY VOCATIONS

Father, in every generation you provide ministers of Christ and the Church. We come before you now, asking that you call forth more men to serve our Archdiocese of Los Angeles in the ministerial priesthood. Give us priests

who will lead and guide your holy people gathered by Word and Sacrament. Bless us with priestly vocations so

that we can continue to be a truly Eucharistic Church, strengthened in our discipleship of Jesus Christ, your

Only Son. Raise up, we pray, men who are generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts for your greater glory and for the good of your people. We make our prayer in the presence and power of the

Holy Spirit, through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

CHILDREN & YOUTH PROGRAMS

From the desk of Darlene Holaway… (Directory of Religious Education)

This Sunday, January 11th, we will kick off our Sacramental Preparation for all of our parish children! We will be presenting them as Candidates for First Penance! The “little ceremony” at the end of each Mass takes only 3-4 minutes but is a very important step for our 2nd-8th graders!

We are off and running again. All middle school stu-dents are welcome to join us Wednesday nights from 6:30pm until 8:30pm. We meet in Assumption Hall for fun and food for our bodies and souls. This week's joke was found at: Basic Jokes You may be obsessed with your cell phone if... You use the menu light as your night light. It take you an hour on a regular phone to get the same feeling of a five-minute cellular call. The term fashion statement means matching your outfit with your cell phone carrying case.

It will be held again this year in the beautiful Ana-heim Convention Center (in Anaheim, CA) on February 27-March 1! Our theme for '09 is "Love Unfolding ... Igniting Our Yes!" There will also be exciting cultural Liturgies each day! If you would like a registration book, call Darlene at 642-7966 ext 118. There are also rooms reserved at the Candy Cane Lane Inn (next to Disneyland!) for Friday - Saturday nights or for one of those nights only. Communion of life with Christ through Mary

Tuesdays at 9:30AM in St. Julie’s Chapel, Parish Center Wednesday at 7:30PM in San Miguel Room, Parish Ctr Questions? Contact Lyla Alexander at 644-5795 “The gift of faith given to us in the Sacrament of Baptism should lead us to the steady growth of our adherence to Christ. Baptism, stands before us not only as something accomplished, but also as a certain mission and purpose. Similar to faith, Baptism is a mission for us that will not be completely fulfilled until the moment of our union with Christ, when we will be able to repeat the words of St. Paul: ‘Yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me.’”

HERMITS OF ST. GILES—–——————————

Hi Everyone, This brand new year gives us another chance for discern-ing how to walk in the light of God. Psalm 37 says to us, "Be still before the Lord and wait in patience. Do not fret at the one who prospers." This is a weakness in our char-acter wanting to compare ourselves to others, "Keep up with the Jones' " Each of us are diamonds in the mo-saic. Practice sitting in silence, let your thoughts relax, Let your feelings relax. Allow God to touch your heart in this stillness. Sometimes tears will flow, let them. This is the healing balm of God flowing through you as a river of grace. Practice prayer. Love, b.Mark Hermits of St. Giles

QUESTION FOR ADULTS, TEENS AND CHILDREN:

God has given each of us the gifts of Time, Talent and Treasure! In this new year, and because of our own Bap-tism into His family, how can we return these to Him and to our Parish Family?

- 9 -

Stewardship is the loving response of God’s love for us by living the individual and universal call to discipleship, a lifelong “Way of Life”, whereby one responds to the mission and ministry of the local and universal church. We are all at different stages of our understanding of stewardship and our willingness to accept stewardship in our daily lives. But one thing is clear, each of us can grow closer in our relationship with God by consciously and prayerfully determining what our next stewardship action will be. God gives us time, talent, and treasure to bring us closer to the living Christ; to enter into deeper communion with Him by extending His mercy to others. When we extend His love to others, we become more and more the person God created us to be.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances…” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT

“But the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and give His life for many.” Mark 10:45

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:21

Stewardship Prayer

Gracious God, you call us to be disciples and good stewards of your gifts.

Open our minds and hearts to a greater appreciation of your countless bless-

ings. With Mary’s help, transform us to nurture a way of life marked by prayer,

service and sharing. Teach us to be faithful servants, returning tenfold the gifts

entrusted to us. Bless our stewardship “Way of life” campaign, as we work to

advance the mission of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen
