OKLAHOMA VS. WEST VIRGINIA, PITTSBURGH

WEEKEND STORYLINES No. 19 Oklahoma returns to the mat for the first time in 2018 this week with two road duals. The Sooners open Big 12 competition on Thursday at West Virginia before facing Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The contests mark OU’s first true road duals of the season. Its first three took place at the Journeymen Northeast Duals on Nov. 11 in Clifton Park, N.Y. OU posted a 1-2 record in the single-day event, opening with a dominant 53-0 win over Sacred Heart before dropping duals to No. 12 Rutgers (22-9) and No. 8 NC State (27-13). Additionally, the Sooners have had one home dual against Appalachian State, which OU won, 19-13, on Dec. 17.

The Sooners will face a familiar foe on Sunday, as Pittsburgh’s head coach Keith Gavin served as an assistant coach for OU head coach Lou Rosselli in 2016-17. SOONERS IN THE POLLS Oklahoma ended 2017 ranked No. 19 in the USA Today/National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll, receiving 77 points. The Sooners are one of four Big 12 teams earning a spot in the coaches poll, joining Oklahoma State (No. 3), Northern Iowa (No. 14) and South Dakota State (No. 15).

Six of OU’s dual opponents this season (Oklahoma State, NC State, Lehigh, South Dakota State, Rutgers, Edinboro) are ranked in the coaches poll.

In the Intermat individual rankings released on Dec. 26, Yoanse Mejias (174 pounds) is ranked No. 13 and Christian Moody (125 pounds) is ranked No. 17.

LAST TIME OUT Oklahoma opened its home slate with a 19-13 victory over Appalachian State on Dec. 17.

The Sooners claimed six bout wins in the dual, including a major decision by Jake Rubio at 133 pounds, to earn the win and move to 2-2 on the season.

THERE’S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING Redshirt sophomore Christian Moody (125 pounds) recorded his first career technical fall at the Lindenwood Open with an 18-2 win over Maryville’s Kolby Smith in the second round.

True freshman Connor Webb (285 pounds) claimed his first career win by fall in the first round of the 285-pound bracket at the Lindenwood Open, pinning McKendree’s Christian Boyles in 2:02.

Against Sacred Heart at the Journeymen Duals, senior Yoanse Mejias (174 pounds) and junior Jake Rubio (133 pounds) posted their first technical falls at OU, defeating Austin Abacherli (23-7) and Shaun Williams (17-1), respectively. In the same dual, redshirt freshman Justin Thomas (157 pounds) and freshman Matthew Waddell (184 pounds) earned their first career wins by fall, pinning Adrian Nelson in 0:29 and Matt Fallon in 0:39, respectively.

PIN IT TO WIN IT Senior Mike Longo (141 pounds) opened the Lindenwood Open with three consecutive wins by fall, pinning unattached Parker Filius in 3:41, Missouri’s Nick Nasenbeny in 1:38 and Lindenwood’s Danny Swan in 6:12. Longo recorded two pins total in the 2016-17 season. Senior Dawaylon Barnes also recorded multiple wins by fall at the Lindenwood Open, pinning McKendree’s Qiante Wagner in 4:08 and Lindenwood’s Kyle Jolas in 5:08 in consecutive matches. Junior Davion Jeffries joins Longo as the only other Sooner to record three wins by fall on the season so far. He downed Sacred Heart’s Russell Feye in 2:28 at the Journeymen Northeast Duals, SIU-Edwardsville’s Cameron Kelley in 3:15 at the Lindenwood Open and North Idaho College’s Brent Evans in 2:12 at the Cliff Keen Invitational. Including Longo, Barnes and Jeffries, a total of eight Sooners have combined for 14 wins by fall through four events this season. Other wrestlers include Andrew Dixon (1; Jordan Atienza, Central Michigan, 7:12), Justin Thomas (1; Adrian Nelson, Sacred Heart, 0:29), Jeremy Thomas (2; Tyler Grimsley, Olivet College, 0:55; William Schmidt, Sacred Heart, 1:09), Matthew Waddell (1; Matt Fallon, Sacred Heart, 0:39) and Connor Webb (1; Christian Boyles, McKendree, 2:02).

RUNNING THE GAUNTLET On Dec. 10, The Open Mat and WrestleStat released rankings of the most difficult individual schedules faced by Division I wrestlers so far this season. Senior Yoanse Mejias is ranked No. 1 overall in strength of schedule, while redshirt sophomore Christian Moody comes in at No. 4.

Mejias, who is 14-4 on the season at 174 pounds, has faced eight wrestlers ranked by InterMat this season, including three individuals ranked in the top five and four in the top 10.

At 125 pounds, Moody has competed against seven ranked wrestlers this year, including three top-10 foes.
