COMPLETE KITCHENS TOLD US .....

Wow what a busy time of year! I hope you like the new look magazine and thanks to all the businesses that have supported it!I’ve been busy organising the Okehampton Festival on 6th July and working with the team on the Magazine! On my travels it’s been great to see Boomerang open in the Red lion Yard and Tricia at Kudos has expanded, so congratulations to you both!I’ve been in the role for 6 months now and would like to take this opportunity to thank the business community for their support and for community itself for getting behind the local events and making them so successful.

Town Promotions Manager

Welcome to the new format and full colour Okehampton Living magazine.

Over the past two and a half years we have had wonderful feed-back from advertisers and people who just enjoy reading the magazine, that we felt it was time to upgrade it and take it a stage further. We have increased the circulation to 4,500 per issue so we can get out into the villages. If you can distribute around your village please let me know. Perhaps, who knows, we can start a Village News section to promote events.

Saturday 6th July will see a brand new event in town, Okehampton Festival. This festival will be a celebration of all local produce and crafts. There will be demonstrations of cooking - and of course, tasting. There will be stalls selling local crafts as well as music and fun.

We will also celebrate the traditional Devon Cream Tea. You can get a recipe

and entry form from Donalds or OK Leisure so that you can make a Devon Split from an old traditional recipe. Even if you don’t manage to win the competition - the results will taste delicious!

Make sure you are in town that Saturday and enjoy all the tastes and sounds. Keep up-to-date with what is happening and where, through the festival website which is www.okehamptonfestival.com

The Chamber of Trade has again helped brighten the town with all the hanging baskets that bring so much colour to the streets during the summer. Just enjoy the colour and let’s hope for better summer weather this year!

Regular contributor Tom Buxton has just finished his A Levels and we wish him all the best with his results.

The Chamber of Trade want to encourage you into town and into the shops. We have started more projects this year and want to continue creating ideas that make Okehampton special. We want to make Okehampton a place where you want to come and shop, enjoy a cup of coffee, have a meal and a drink - making an enjoyable experience for you.

keep it local

We all have read and seen dire predictions for the future of the High Street. Mary Portas has been asked by the government to assist in

revitalising towns - all due to the increasing use of internet shopping and the recession. When large, household names disappear, what hope is there for small, local independent shops?

I think the answer to that question is long and complicated (even if there is one!) - there is no ‘quick fix’ but let’s look at it very simply: There are over 6000 people living in Okehampton and once you bring the small villages into the equation you get to a figure of over 10,000. If each of those people spent just £5 in Okehampton every week, that would bring from £30,000 to £50,000 per week or put another way over £1,500,000 per year. That can create a lot of jobs and secure the future of this market town. It’s quite a thought!

When you look at the variety of shops here in town you see a great diversity and individuality that you cannot get from the big city multiples that are just clones of each other.

ENTERTAINMENT NEW FILMS

It’s safe to say that if you’re in need of a spectacular blockbuster movie experience this Summer, your local cinemas will have

you covered in good measure, with Man of Steel, Despicable Me 2, The Wolverine, The World’s End and Kick-Ass 2 all heading to the big screen in the weeks ahead. With all of these impending prequels, sequels and new franchise instalments on the way, though, it’s inevitable that we as viewers can begin to feel like kids lost in a candy shop, albeit on a far tighter budget that only allows us a moderate appetite.

With that in mind, this article will focus on some of the best-selling movies of the Summer so far, many of which are still available at local auditoriums for your viewing pleasure. I shan’t attempt to ‘gloss over’ any flaws of current motion pictures, simply because with cash less freely available to spend these days, it’s vital that you know the truth on whether a movie warrants your hard-earned £10 or not. Here, then, is a guide to the most notable releases of the past two months, and indeed which flicks you should endeavour to seek out if you missed them during exam season…

1. IRON MAN 3 (4.5*)Inevitably, what with the wealth of acclaim surrounding 2012’s hit superhero movie Avengers Assemble, any Marvel film that followed was always guaranteed a level of success. Thankfully, for the most part Iron Man 3 refuses to rest on its laurels, packing a thoughtful and at times poignant narrative which manages to innovate and satisfy in equal measure. Robert Downey Jr is on fine form in the lead role too once again, and Shane Black’s direction of the third instalment rivals even that of Joss Whedon’s Avengers for scope and visual spectacle. That said, Iron Man 3’s glamorous iron-clad bonnet doesn’t come out totally

A RETROSPECTIVE OF 2013’s SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS SO FAR

halfway out of the dark

stainless. Although the storyline features brilliant set pieces, its main twists are pre-dictable and some of the emotive character arcs are later sidelined in favour of a blazing action finale. All the same, as a tour de force of CGI quality and indeed as a final curtain for Robert Downey Jr’s rendition of the Armoured Avenger, the film succeeds without a shadow of a doubt.

2. STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (4*)Whereas the latest Marvel motion picture manages to overcome its narrative gripes on the whole, J.J. Abrams’ second Star Trek outing doesn’t perhaps quite manage such a feat. Into Darkness is undoubtedly a dazzling follow-up to the hit 2009 reboot, boosted in no small measure by the superb special effects and Abrams’ typically assured direction of events, locales and the characters inhabiting his reworking of the classic universe. The problem, then? Those

aforementioned characters are rather lacking in substance. Whereas 2009’s Trek prequel outing placed an effective focus on the relationship between Chris Pine’s Kirk and Zachary Quinto’s Spock, Into Darkness does so only to a fleet-ing extent, instead placing an emphasis on its antagonist- played brilliantly by Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch- and its attempts to pay homage to the classic film The Wrath of Khan. The intense action sequences on display cement this ambitious sequel’s place as a budding Summer blockbuster, but the lack of depth beneath them ensures that Abrams can never aim any higher than that.

3. THE GREAT GATSBY (4.5*)A controversial statement: in this reviewer’s humble opinion, The Great Gatsby represents a defining landmark in motion picture adaptations of literature. Leonardo

Page 10: Okehampton Living Magazine July Issue 2013

Jeong in particular all seem to simply go through the motions rather than adding any nuance to their portrayals, meaning that no matter how many small laughs can be had either thanks to Alan or at his expense, The Hangover: Part III nonetheless represents a colossally wasted opportunity. The only true compensation here is knowing that the franchise is now done and dusted, but that’s not enough of a reason to warrant you spending that hard-earned tenner in this case.

5. MAN OF STEEL (4*)It’s safe to say that few movie directors would envy Zack Snyder’s challenge of resurrecting the Superman movie fran-chise for Warner Brothers. Nevertheless, fans will at least be relieved to hear that while Man of Steel is nowhere close to the perfect superhero movie, to some extent it manages to bring back the Kryptonian hero to a similar effect to what Christopher Nolan did for Batman in 2005. Henry Cavill in particular shines in the role of the titular protagonist, bringing depth and newfound emotion to the character in 2013.Man of Steel does “stumble and fall” at times, though, just as Russell Crowe’s Jor-El notes of the human race. Snyder’s direction of the piece feels restrained by its genre, the themes of isolation and belonging become overly repetitive in their implementation, and there’s a general lack of heart on display during proceedings. To paraphrase a speech from Nolan’s Batman- this is the film the Superman franchise needs, but not necessarily the one its fans deserve.

DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and the rest of the ensemble cast do glorious justice to the character constructs of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age masterpiece, but it’s undoubtedly Baz Luhrrman’s incredible direction of the piece which hones its realism and faithfulness to the text. Whether it’s in the visual fidelity of the party sequences, the accomplished soundtrack (featuring Jay Z, Florence and the like in a 1920s context) or simply the subtler moments of emotive contemplation, Luhrrman has handled perfectly his rendition of a defining American novel. It’s possible to say that The Great Gatsby outstays its welcome as a standalone film, yet in terms of literature blockbuster adaptations, they really don’t come any better than this.

4. THE HANGOVER PART III (3*)Surprisingly, for a franchise that’s become so lamented for its refusal to innovate on what’s come before, it’s The Hangover: Part III’s deviation from the norm that proves its Achilles heel. Gone are the bachelor parties and weddings, replaced with a heist-fuelled quest narrative that involves the beloved Wolfpack on a race against time to find Leslie Chow and bring him to justice.

While Zach Galifinakas still shines as Alan, there’s a worrying sense here that the rest of the cast felt too short-changed by their reduced roles in the script to put any real effort into the production. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha and Ken By Tom Buxton

The Okehampton Sports and Fitness Festival returns this summer, delivering fantastic opportunities

for children, young people and adults to have fun and be active.

Organised by local sports development charity OCRA in association with the many local activity providers, the festival will this year be held between Friday 5th July and Sunday 14th July. The event includes festival favourites such as the badminton tournament, cycling time-trial, mixed rounders tournament, ladies netball tournament, the handicap squash tournament and a wide range of challenges to put you to the test. For the less competitive of you, the festival offers a vast amount of sport, activity and fitness sessions including pilates, dancercise, table tennis, judo, running, trampolining, gymnastics, walks, adventure sports and many, many more throughout the week!

The ever-popular Super Sporting Sunday will this year be held at the beginning of the festival on Sunday 7th July. The Super Sporting Sunday includes the men’s, ladies and veteran’s 5-a-side football tournaments, the mixed-team hockey tournament, a free swim at Parklands, sports taster sessions and much more activity in a bustling, busy day in Simmons Park.

Stuart Lord, OCRA Activity Development Manger, is looking forward to the start of the festival. “The Okehampton Sports and Fitness Festival is always a brilliant week, with so many sessions going on throughout the week, many of them free of charge. It offers so many fantastic opportunities to the people of Okehampton and surrounding areas to get involved in new sports and activities. Last year’s festival offered over 40 different activities throughout the week, attracting over 2,000 partici-pants. We are hoping this year can be even bigger!”

Okehampton Showa great day out!

hursday 8th August is Okehampton Show day and is one of the main events in the town calendar, with stunning views of Dartmoor as a backdrop it is easy to see why. Situated at Stony Park it showcases all that is good in local agriculture and business.

Okehampton Show was founded in 1890 with the first show being in 1891 and with a few exceptions has been going ever since.

Shuttle buses run from the town to the showground and back so you can avoid any parking problems and still arrive at the show with enough energy to walk around and take in all the colour of the trade stands. There will be entertainment all day in the main show ring with carriage driving displays, vintage vehicles, terrier racing and a grand parade of animals - all in all - a great day out!

If you go down in the woods today ...

Independent Funeral Directors - Established for five GenerationsRedstonesFEATURE REDSTONES FUNERAL DIRECTORS

Last month at the beautiful Beer cross woodland burial site on the outskirts of Okehampton, there was a rather

unusual open day. The theme of the day was ‘Everything you wanted to know about dying and death but were afraid to ask’. The lovely setting offered opportunities for the many visitors to explore topics with professionals involved with end of life services and care. Local funeral director Ali Redstone commented: “People are living longer than ever before. There are many positive aspects to living in a society where medical care is so good and premature death so rare. However, once death was seen as a natural and inevitable occurrence, it is now often seen as something avoidable or extraordinary. We would like to make it easier for people to be more open about dying and death.”

It’s tempting to expect that professionals and institutions will take care of the process of dying and death. Many of us have never had to acquire the emotional and practical skills for supporting the dying and bereaved that our grandparents were accustomed to.

Often people die without wills, leaving potentially complex matters for their families and friends to resolve. Sometimes the bereaved, or those living with a terminal illness, experience isolation because many of us don’t know what to say or how to act towards them. Even health care professionals struggle to have conversations with their patients about what care or treatments they would like as they approach death. This makes it harder to plan the care that a person may want. When we don’t acknowledge that someone is dying - opportunities to resolve issues or to say goodbye may be missed.

Ali also said “In my day to day dealings with the bereaved, I often find they are distressed and vulnerable. What I have come to realise is the enormous emotional benefit gained by those families who have already done some forward planning”.Ali suggested a few things that everyone could consider doing, to reduce anxiety and upset within families when a death does occur. Make a will - Making a will ensures that even after you’ve passed away, your wishes are carried out exactly as you planned and your loved ones are taken care of.

Consider advanced care planning - ACP is about planning for the ‘what ifs’ that may occur across an entire lifespan, such as being maimed in a motorcycle crash at a young age. These plans can be revised and updated throughout your life as health status and living circumstances change.Document your funeral wishes – This is a wonderful process which provides an opportunity to talk about the past and provides a space for someone facing death to tell their story. Making sure your loved ones are aware of your fundamental wishes will take an enormous strain away from them. Every person deserves a fitting end to their life. Be willing to listen and talk – Don’t be afraid to show that you care. Extend the love and understanding to those who are grieving and in need that you would hope to receive yourself.

For further information on end of life issues call Ali Redstone who will advise you or put you in contact with the appropriate professionals.

“Cool Clobber for Little Peeps” is the tag line for Boomerang, in Red Lion Yard and describes the shop very well, with clothes for children from baby to young teens. We all know that kids grow out of clothes long before they wear them out, so why not re-sell them through Boomerang and buy ‘new to you’ for your Little Peeps at a fraction of the price you would pay for new designer labels. Boomerang is more than just clothes; they stock new shoes from fashion to school, from baby to size 5. There is also a good stock of nursery equipment

Fashion changes very quickly and to be able to keep the Fore Street shop stocked with the some fantastic clothes, during July, Angel have a pop-up shop in St James Street where they have clearance lines on offer. So why not indulge yourself either with the latest trends or with a bargain? - you know you deserve it!

Purple Penguins at the top of Red Lion Yard have some exquisite silver jewellery - and you just know that it would just finish off that new dress you bought in Angel. So, OK, you have now treated yourself twice - but who’s counting?

Shouldn’t have done the gardening over the weekend because the nails are letting the whole look down. Now it’s into Naughty Nails in the Arcade and see Selina. She will match your nails to the dress or advise on a look.

So now having a new dress and a fetching necklace, fabulous nails but your old hairstyle is letting you down. Just one last treat will have you looking and feeling perfect; so it’s into Quinns to chat with one of the stylists who will make you look fabulous.

Let’s be honest - you don’t treat yourself very often - do you?

Allan Balsdon has been in the recovery and garage industry all of his working life and took on the running of a local garage in 1997 concentrating in vehicle maintenance and recovery of light and heavy vehicles.

“Being reliable and consistant, we secured several maintenance contracts and by 2004 we realised we would have to seek alternative premises and after a long search we purchased an acre of land on Exeter Road Industrial Estate in Okehampton and built a workshop designed for the efficient maintenance of cars, vans and trucks and to use it as an operating centre for our recovery service.” said Allan.

Allan went on to say that he is very proud of the fact BVS is a family run business as he employs four of his sons, as well as four other qualified technicians and two apprentices.

“We are ATA registered and our recovery technicians are IVR trained and ADR certified. We also subscribe to the Motor Industry Code of Practice and we are a Unipart Car Care Certified repairer.”

BVS are great supporters of local clubs and groups and sponsor Okehampton Argyle Football Club, Okehampton Cubs and Scouts, Okehampton Rugby Club, Equine Eventing and other local good causes.

SPORT FOCUS ON

Argyle will again field two adult sides next season. The first team will continue in Division 1 East of the South West Peninsula

League. Last season, they finished in 9th position after poor performances in their last few games saw a possible sixth place slip away from them. Champions Exmouth Town have been promoted to the Premier Division to be replaced by relegated Liverton United. The opening fixtures are shown below. In the Throgmorton Cup, Argyle face a tough trip to Premier Division side Liskeard. The Reserves will once again compete in the Devon and Exeter League division 4, having avoided relegation by one place last season. As this is written, their fixtures are still awaited.

Okehampton ArgyleThe Youth section of the club had an excellent season again. Our under 16s, 15s and 12s all finished Runners Up in their age groups. The Under 11s and 10s also did extremely well with mid-table finishes. Our under 9’s went one better than their older age groups by winning the Mid-Devon League. The U16s also came close to winning the Devon Plate. They finally lost on penalties in the Final played at Willand Rovers.

Any new children wishing to join the Club, please get your parents to email Neil Clift ([email protected]) for information.

Once again, Okehampton Argyle won the Programme of the Year at the South West Peninsula League Footballl Awards. Thanks go to Ink Print here in Okehampton for all their efforts in helping us toachieve this.

GARDENING HINTS&TIPS

24 OKEHAMPTON LIVING

With the late start to the season it’s been hard to get any momentum in the Garden but it’s amazing how all of a

sudden with a bit of sun everything is now in full flow and will take some keeping up with. Now there’s plenty to do, feeding, weeding, watering and trimming to keep our gardens on track for the maximum pleasure that all the colour and scents our gardens can offer us, ready for when we get the opportunity to just enjoy relaxing in it!

Summer is the ideal time for bigger landscaping projects while it’s dry and frost free, many jobs are just so much easier when the weather is good. Maybe a new Patio or even just a small patio feature to place your table and chairs or barbecue on in your favourite

spot to sit or dine. Check out www.patiokits.co.uk for ideas.Take advantage of dry weather to spruce up fences and sheds with a bit of Ronseal and don’t forget to teak oil hardwood furniture to stop shrinkage cracks as the wood dries out.

Now is the time to look out for pests and diseases such as vine weevil and scale insect on the plants, catch them before they get established with a suitable spray. Inspect fruit trees, especially apple for apple scab and check that all are healthy and clear of disease. Keep up with fortnightly applications of Rose clear to keep your Rose bushes in tip-top condition and Green and Black fly free.Keep on top of weeds in borders. Wolf have a range of easy to use tools which includes some very effective hoes and cultivators that

• From approx July 11th brassicas crops will be vulnerable to Cabbage Root Fly attack, protect by placing discs of old carpet with a cut from edge to centre for ease of fitting around the stems of the plants. This makes it hard for the little critters to get down into the gap between the stem and the soil to lay their eggs.• Wage war on slugs! The gardener’s best choice of defence is in the preparation of the soil. Slugs love clods with loose soil beneath so try not to create slug heaven for them. Create a fine tilth with no clods, then compress by rolling.• If we are lucky enough to have a fine dry summer…. During periods without rain spray your runner beans with a fine mist of water to help ‘set’ the flowers.• Hoe Hoe Hoe!! Not only does it keep down the weeds but it conserves moisture in dry times too by stopping the capillary action whereby water is drawn to the surface of the soil then evaporates.• If the dreaded Blight appears on your potatoes, the only real method of damage limitation is to remove the foliage/haulm. This will hopefully stop the blight affecting the tubers although

gardening tips FROM HALLWOOD FARM

your yield will be reduced as the potatoes will almost (but not quite) stop increasing in size.• Check your soils pH. Areas around Dartmoor are notoriously acidic. With every effort in the world you will never produce bumper crops if the pH level of your soil is out of balance. For a small fee Richard will test your soil, with farm pH testing kit, just enquire in the shop.• There’s still time to squeeze in a sowing a few more crops.Calabrese until the end of JulyCarrots after 11th July (most years) to avoid Carrot Root FlySpinach & Chard until mid Aug Kale, Spring Cabbage, sow in July/August, transplant Sept/Oct for harvest early next spring. will help you keep your vegetable garden and all your pots and containers weed free. Carry on cutting back perennials and deadhead all dying and spent flowers on annuals, roses and shrubs. Trim back lavender and rosemary after flowering without cutting too far into the old wood and prune Wisteria, cut back this year’s growth to about 6 inches in July.

Try to mow your lawn at least once a week, Ever Green Complete will help you produce a more beautiful lawn after just one simple application. Its unique 4-in-1 formula feeds and greens the grass, kills weeds and moss plus it helps your lawn make the most of every drop of water that falls. It’s quick and easy to apply through the built-in hand-held spreader. Just walk up and down the lawn to spread the granules in an even pattern. If you have a larger lawn, apply quickly and evenly through the wheeled Easy Spreader+. In just 7 days you will see greener grass and the moss turning brown before dying off. In the next few weeks broad leaved weeds such as white clover, daisies, dandelions will twist and turn until they fade away. While the long-lasting nutrients in Ever Green Complete continue to feed the grass so that it becomes thicker and greener over the next 6 weeks.

Plant using the “puddling” technique this time of year, dig a hole, set the plant in it and water the hole several times (add fertiliser at the recommended dose to the watering can). Firm the plant in — this gives close and intimate contact between the roots and surrounding soil.

Remember to water and feed your plants regularly, especially those in hanging baskets, pots or containers as well as climbers and roses growing against a sunny wall. Water hydrangeas with hydrangea colourant for true blue.

Save seeds from the seed heads of hardy annuals, perennials, bulbs, rock plants, trees and shrubs, put them into a paper bag or envelope unless you are sowing straight away.

Cuttings of perennials and bedding plants will root well at this time of year and quickly become strong enough to overwinter inside.Plant autumn flowering bulbs and start to plant spring flowering bulbs, especially tulips, daffodils, narcissus, alliums, iris and crocus, remember to buy plenty, by the time they flower in spring you will wish you had planted more.If you have any questions or need some advice the staff at Bostocks will always do their best to help.

Reminders • Deadhead flowering plants regularly• Watering! Particularly containers, and new plants • Collect seed from favourite plants• Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners• Keep ponds and water features topped up• Feed the soil with green manures

BID (Business Improvement District)

If you have a business within the designated BID area you

will receive a voting form very shortly. Please read the

Business Plan very carefully and then vote Yes or No. If you

don’t vote then you might well get the result you don’t

want - and remember - this result, if it is yes, will last as

law for the next five years, so please think carefully.

You will also get a statement

from some local business people

so you will get a balanced view

which will enable you to make

an informed decision.

Kelly College Preparatory School A child’s first few years are precious and exciting and have a deep impact on the rest of their lives. At Kelly College

Preparatory School, our contribution is to seek high academic standards, help children meet their full potential and, just as importantly give each child a caring, happy and adventurous start to his/her education.

There is a safe, fun, stimulating environment to encourage play, creativity and exploration. The grounds are extensive and include an outdoor classroom and a newly set up Forest school area complete with a tipi which can house a class of children. Our Forest school meets weekly for our youngest children and activities are wide ranging from early sensory walks, bird and animal recognition and environmental painting and sculpture. Older children have experience of shelter building and fire making. Forest school takes place out of doors whatever the weather!

Well qualified teachers and classroom assistants focus on developing each child’s social and academic needs. Our high staffing ratios enable us to fulfil this. Children are taught by subject specialists. This begins in Nursery with music making and PE and subject specialism increases as pupils move up through the school. The curriculum is broad and balanced and is enriched by educational trips, theme days and visitors to the school. The day is spent in bright welcoming classrooms and pupils have access to our indoor swimming pool, astro turf, modern Science, Art and DT laboratories as well as our pitches and tennis court. The pupils work hard and are successful in their academic studies. They also shine on the sports field, musically, on the stage, in art and as chess players.Wrap around care is provided for those early morning starts and late pickups and the children’s enthusiasm for Breakfast and Biscuit Club is second to none!

The strong community feel and excellent home school communication are paramount to the children’s happiness in school and contribute to their learning.

Pupils and their families from Year 3 have recently been enjoying a new Family Learning Course learning easy, new recipes to share at home. With inspirations from

Food for Life and Don’t let Devon go to Waste, the group has harvested, prepared and cooked locally produced ingredients to make healthy, family snacks. The children tried out new ingredients that they might not have eaten before, and got really stuck in preparing crispy croustades and leek, pear and smoked cheese triangles. The 5 week course finished with a visit to Okehampton Community Garden where the children particularly enjoyed pulling up weeds and planting more salad crops.

One of the parents said “It was lovely to spend time with my daughter at the garden and we both really enjoyed cooking together. We have already tried the new recipes at home for the rest of the family to enjoy.”

Okehampton Primary School is currently working towards the Bronze Award with the Food for Life scheme which encourages growing and cooking more of their own fruit and vegetables.
