Q: Why is OC a great choice?

A: We make a point of being learner centred; meaning that it is my goal to help you achieve the skills you feel you need. Each student has different technical goals and I try and help each one in any way I can.

Q: What are the benefits of an education in the trades?

A: The most obvious benefit is the ability to make a good living and a good life for as long as you like.

Tradespeople find a great feeling of achievement when they are involved in the process of building or making. A maker gets to see an actual physical result from their efforts each day and it keeps you going.

A lot of work these days is seemingly never-ending, whereas when you are making something it will eventually be done. Then you make something else. That for me is just fun, especially if you get to make a range of projects.

Q: What keeps you going?

A: My favourite part of working is watching the changing levels of comprehension the students undergo. The look of amazement on a person’s face when they step back and realize that they actually made “that” is priceless! I will never get tired of trying to improve the process of teaching this skill. It is just flat-out fun.

Q: What is your personal teaching philosophy?

A: My personal teaching approach/philosophy is pretty simple. Pick up a tool and go to work. Repeat until you achieve the result you want. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. My trade and my program are not theoretical; they are practical and very hands-on. You will never become a skilled maker of anything just by talking about it.

Q: What is your background? A: I love mechanics, metal fabrication, construction, electronics/electrical, design, and arts. For me these are the basics of life, work and joy.

Through his career, Tim has worked on projects that included custom furniture (period styles as well as contemporary design), wood boat building and repair, custom yacht interiors, staircase work(both curved and spiral), and higher-end one-of-a-kind guitars.

“My English courses are certainly not typical. I incorporate lots of different media in my classes, with the aim of encouraging students to practice critical thinking in a way that influences them to see everything around them in a radically different way.”

“The small class sizes at OC are a huge benefit that cannot be emphasized enough. I get to know each and every student personally, and put ample time and attention into helping them improve their writing skills. There’s a reason that almost all OC students say that the professors are the best part of their educational experience; we truly do care about your success!”

FACULTY PROFILERyan Ransom, PhDPhysics and Astronomy professor at OC

Personal teaching philosophy

“I love being in the classroom and interacting with our students. Students often say ‘I didn’t know physics could be so much fun.’ My approach to teaching is to be as demonstrative as possible. I want my students to be engaged. If I’m having fun, they usually are as well. My classroom is always interactive and I’m always looking for a creative way to explain challenging concepts.”

Why OC is a great choice

“OC offers many advantages over larger, more impersonal institutions. The best way to learn is to ask questions. Our small, interactive classrooms make our students feel more comfortable asking questions in-class. Our instructors are also more than willing to help outside of class and there are numerous on-campus support services ready to help.”

In science, the door to new discovery is always open. As a researcher, I want to continue to play at least a small role in continued discovery. As a professor, I want my students to take a passion for continued learning outside the classroom. Ryan Ransom, PhD

“I’m able to learn the stuff from high school I didn’t care to learn at the time. I’m able to catch up to my peers and find the potential I would never have discovered.”

FAVOURITE THING“The positive learning environment. I have made some great friends and feel empowered to reach my goals. Since enrolling in my classes, my self-esteem has risen as the program material has proven not as difficult as I had feared.”

STUDENT PROFILEJesse Fraser – GIS Certificate, Salmon Arm, BC (grad 2011)

“The GIS program has opened many doors that I was previously not aware of. It also allowed me to be employed for the last two years at a company in Salmon Arm. With the certificate and my undergraduate degree, I am proceeding with a Master’s degree in GIS, which is a huge change in life course for me.”

“OC has allowed me to have a firm financial foothold by offering courses I need in a location where my living arrangement is affordable. The small class sizes and community feel make OC different. By the end of the semester if you don’t recognize everyone on campus you really haven’t been getting the most out of your experience.”

“Studying at OC has worked out really well. OC is friendly and welcoming, diverse and accepting. It’s comfortable here. I have met people from over 40 different countries in my three years here and I’ve learned to use English to communicate with people from all over the world. I now have friends and connections that span the globe and I’ve learned lots about other cultures.”

“You can’t get ignored or lost in the crowd here. Classes are smaller and students are more motivated. There is lots of interaction between students and professors. Professors are very accessible, especially if you need help in understanding anything. They are great to talk to, and friendly and close to students.”

“I see so many more options now. The College is offering me an opportunity to develop myself. I’ve been a mother for almost 18 years, so my focus has been on my children. Being at Okanagan College is helping me focus on me – my skills, my abilities and areas of interest outside of my mother mode.”

“I work in the Aboriginal Student Centre as a peer mentor. We have computers and study space and we are an information resource. We also have fun events, like pot lucks and fundraisers to help students.”

“The Centre is not just for Aboriginal students – everyone is welcome here. It’s a supportive place. The staff are amazing. They help you through things academically, and show you different financial options and opportunities. They are very encouraging and understand the personal challenges students can face.”
