•Oil buried in sediment
-Sediment turns to sedimentary rock
•Rock absorbs oil
•Oil found in sedimentary rock

• Shale/best source rock
- Oil moved in to storage rock
• Storage rock sedimentary

• Supplies
- Eyedropper
- Mineral oil
- 2 samples/sandstone
- 2 samples/limestone
- 2 samples/shale
- Magnifying glass
- Stopwatch w/ second hand
- Paper plates (6)
• Procedure
1. Place samples on plate
2. Drop 5 drops/mineral oil/sample
3. Start stopwatch
4. Stop stopwatch/when oil/soaked in
5. Record in data table
Hypothesis:If oil is poured on sandstone, limestone, and shale,
then sandstone will absorb oil the quickest.
Why:
Because sandstone feels the most porous.
