Championship Games in Ohio StadiumAfter hosting the OHSAA state championship games in Columbus throughout the 1980s, natural grass was installed in Ohio Stadium in Columbus in the spring of 1990 and OSU asked the OHSAA to move its football state championship games to another location. The OHSAA found a home in Stark County, with Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium sharing the state championship games for 24 years until 2014 when the finals returned to the ‘Shoe.

The current contract for the OHSAA football state championship games initially included two years at Ohio Stadium (2014 and 2015), and an additional year was added for 2016 due to the stadi-um renovations underway in Canton. There is currently no contract in place for the football finals after 2016, but the OHSAA intends to move the finals back to Stark County for 2017 and 2018.

On the Verge of HistoryEntering the 2016 season, 70 OHSAA member schools have never made the football playoffs. That number has now shrunk by eight schools, as Hilliard Bradley (Div. I), Columbus West (Div. II), Akron East (Div. III), Bellefontaine Ben Logan (Div. IV), Cincinnati Aiken (Div. V), Lakeside Danbury (VIII), McGuffey Upper Scioto Valley (Div.

VII) and Cincinnati Hillcrest Academy (Div. VII) all made the playoffs for the first time in their school’s history. Last year, eight schools made the playoffs for the first time, including Toledo Start (Div. I), Dayton Belmont (Div. III), Lewistown Indian Lake (Div. IV), Byesville Meadowbrook (Div. IV), Magnolia Sandy Valley (Div. V), Bidwell River Valley (Div. V), Bethel-Tate (Div. V) and North Jackson Jack-son-Milton (Div. VII). The number of first-time playoff participants since 2000 includes eight in 2016, eight in 2015, 10 in 2014, two in 2013, seven in 2012, eight in 2011, six in 2010, 14 in 2009, 12 in 2008, 14 in 2007, 10 in 2006, 12 in 2005, 16 in 2004, 12 in 2003, 21 in 2002, 17 in 2001 and 26 in 2000.

Since 1999 when the number of regional qualifiers was expanded to 32 teams per division and the first-round game has been played at the higher seed, 209 schools have made their school’s first play-off appearance. In those games, the playoff newcomers went 26-23 (.531) at home, 19-128 (.129) when playing on the road and 3-10 (.231) when playing at a neutral site.

Speaking of Making History...While the aforementioned eight schools are in the playoffs for the first time, Newark Catholic has made the playoffs for a state record 35th time. Building on HistorySee pages 11-18 in this release for the playoff histories of each school that has qualified for the 2016 playoffs.

Week 10 MoversMany schools needed to win their final regular-season game last weekend in order to clinch a playoff berth. But several schools needed to win and get some help to vault into the Top 8 in their region after being outside the playoff field last week. The biggest movers were West Liberty-Salem in Div. IV, Region 15, which was 13th in its region last week, and Bay Village Bay in Div. III, Region 10, which was also 13th last week. Elsewhere, Dayton Belmont in Div. III, Region 12, was 11th in its region last week and lost its Week 10 game, but moved up to No. 8 due to forfeitures of another team. Blanchester (Div. V, Region 20), was 11th last week and moved up to eighth in the final ratings. Four other schools were 10th in their region last week and moved up into the playoff field this week, in-cluding Parma Heights Holy Name (Div. IV, Region 13), Jeromesville Hillsdale (Div. VI, Region 21), Defiance Tinora (Div. VI, Region 22) and Canal Winchester Harvest Prep (Div. VII, Region 27).

First Round SuccessTwo schools have an amazing success rate in the first round of the playoffs. St. Henry has been in the playoffs 15 times and is 15-0 in first-round playoff games. Cincinnati Colerain is 18-0, although one of its first-round games (1995) was later forfeited. In addition, three schools won their first-round playoff game nine straight years before losing, including Germantown Valley View, Mogadore and Newark Licking Valley.

Welcome BackSeveral schools are back in the playoffs this year after being out of

the postseason for several years. The logest of which is by Barber-ton, which is back for the first time since 1998. In 2015, several schools made the playoffs after long abbsences, including Burton Berkshire (Div. V, Region 15, last appearance was in 1981), Holland Springfield (Div. II, Region 4, last appearance was in 1994) and Swanton (Div. V, Region 16, last appearance was in 1995). In 2013, Norwalk was back in the playoffs for the first time since winning a state championship in 1974.

Playoff Upsets?Last year in the first round of the playoffs, the higher seeds (home teams) went 81-31. In Div. I, three double-digit seeds won, includ-ing No. 13 Hilliard Darby, No. 11 Springboro and No. 10 Upper Arlington. In Div. II through VII, four No. 8 seeds knocked off No. 1 seeds, including Macedonia Nordonia (II), Columbus Bishop Watter-son (III), Delta (VI) and Fredericktown (VI). In the first round of the 2014 playoffs, the home teams (higher seeds) went 88-24 and none of the No. 1 seeds in Div. II through VII lost in the first round.

Proving the PollstersThe final 2016 Associated Press state polls will be released Mon-day, Oct. 31. During the playoffs, the weekly release will contain a breakdown of how the state’s top-ranked teams according to the Associated Press media poll have fared in the postseason. Last year, all 70 teams that appeared in the Top 10 of the final AP poll quali-fied for the playoffs. 65 of those schools earned a first-round home game. Last year, the only team to be ranked No. 1 in the final poll and go on to win a state championship were Lakewood St. Edward in Div. I and Coldwater in Div. V.

Defending State ChampionsAn update on the defending state champions will be noted in the OHSAA’s weekly release during the playoffs.

Playoff StreaksColdwater owns the longest active streak of qualifying for the playoffs at 20 straight years. In fact, the Cavaliers have been to the state championship game the last seven years. Newark Catholic owns the record with eight straight title game appearances from 1980-87 followed by Cleveland St. Ignatius with six in a row from 1991-96. Until 2012, Columbus St. Francis DeSales had owned the longest active streak at 18-straight years, but the Stallions missed the playoffs that season. After Coldwater, the second-longest active streak is held by Mogadore at 18 straight playoff years. The all-time longest streak of consecutive years making the playoffs is 22 years by Cleveland St. Ignatius from 1988 through 2009.

MAC Builds on SuccessIn 2014, the highly successful Midwest Athletic Conference became the first league to have three of its members win football state

championships in the same season (Coldwater in Div. V, Minster in Div. VI and Maria Stein Marion Local in Div. VII). The MAC had won two state championships in the same season five times, but never three titles. In 2015, three MAC schools again played in state cham-pionship games, with Coldwater winning in Div. V and Fort Recovery winning in Div. VII, while Marion Local fell to Kirtland in Div. VI.

Those three communities, all located in Mercer County, are all less than 15 miles apart. Hugging the Ohio-Indiana state line, Mercer County has a total population of 40,784 (as of 2013).

The MAC currently owns 114 various OHSAA state team champion-ships.

The MAC is 60-2 in first round playoff games against non-MAC schools since the playoffs expanded to eight qualifiers per region in 1999. (The two losses include a Versailles loss to Lima Central Cath-olic in 2005 and a Delphos St. John’s loss to Arlington in 2014.) The MAC is now 33-7 in state semifinal games against non-MAC schools. The MAC is 49-13 against non-MAC schools in OHSAA regional championship games.

Before the Playoffs… Historians have found that in most years since 1895, the media or a specific organization named an Ohio high school football state champion. The Associated Press began its polls in 1947 and the OHSAA created the playoffs in 1972. The research of mythical state champions dating back to 1895 has been compiled on the football page at OHSAA.org.

Marion Local Sets Consecutive Playoff Wins RecordNot only had Maria Stein Marion Local reach the state champion-ship game for the fifth-straight year last year, the Flyers set a new OHSAA record for consecutive playoff victories with 24. And not far behind is fellow-MAC member and four-time defending state champion Coldwater with 20-straight playoff wins.

Division II Finalists Continue to Be the New Kids on the BlockWhen the OHSAA expanded the football playoffs to seven divisions in 2013 and made Division I smaller (including only the largest 72 schools in the state), one of the resulting effects was that many schools that used to be “small” Div. I schools were now in Div. II. Since then, many Div. II schools have made their schools’ deepest playoff runs. That began with Loveland in 2013 and continued with Cincinnati La Salle in 2014. Both schools not only won their first-ev-er playoff games those seasons, but went on to win the Div. II state title. That fact was evidenced again in 2015 as the Div. II state semi-finalist Massillon Perry made its first appearance in the “final four.”

Skyview Networks to Provide Satellite Dis-tribution of OHSAA Radio Network Football Championship BroadcastsSatellite provider for Ohio’s pro teams to distribute OHSAA football finals from Ohio Stadium Dec. 1-3

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Skyview Networks, the radio broadcast satellite pro-vider for Ohio’s professional sports teams including the Cavs, Blue Jackets, Reds, Indians, Bengals and Browns, will once again distribute the OHSAA Radio Network broad-casts of the 2016 football state championship games. The football championship broadcasts, which had 41 affiliates last year, return to Ohio Stadium in Columbus December 1, 2 and 3.

“Skyview Networks is pleased to partner with the OHSAA Radio Network to deliver state championship broadcasts to its affiliates,” said Matt Stys, Vice President of Business Development for Skyview Networks. “The football state championships in Ohio are a prestigious event and we are proud to add that to our client base, which includes hun-dreds of college and professional teams, many of which are in Ohio. The OHSAA Radio Network continues to grow every year and we look forward to being a part of that growth and service.”

Specializing in news and sports programming, Skyview Networks was formed in 1995 to provide broadcast services in the form of distribution, automation, and inventory management, as well as content for the radio industry. Com-bining cutting-edge technology, extensive resources and unmatched industry expertise, Skyview Networks is the partner of choice for advertisers, radio stations and sports organizations throughout North America.

Skyview Networks is already the satellite provider of the aforementioned professional teams in Ohio along with ABC News Radio and ABC Sports Radio, meaning that most stations in Ohio already have Skyview Networks receivers and can automate the broadcasts.

The OHSAA Radio Network, which has been carried by 76 stations across Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky, was created in 2010 to provide excep-tional radio broadcasts of selected OHSAA state tournaments and partner with local affiliates to carry those broadcasts, along with public service announcements and promotional messages. Stations that carry broad-casts receive discounts or waivers for the rights fees they would normally pay to broadcast OHSAA regional and state tournaments.

Playoff Preview ShowThe OHSAA Radio Network will produce and distribute a football playoff preview show on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The 55 minute show will include two local breaks and will go around the state to preview each division. A link to the show will be emailed to stations for download.
