Ryan Day is in his second season as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. He guided the Buckeyes to a 13-1 season in 2019, his initial season as a head coach. His team was dominant: winning 13 consecutive games by an average of over 36 points per game while ranking in the Top 5 of 12 major NCAA statisti-cal categories. He has guided the Buckeyes to a 7-0 record in this pandemic-shortened 2020 season and now has a career record of 23-1 overall and a 15-0 mark against the Big Ten Conference. Day is the first Ohio State coach in 40 years to be named Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year, and he earned the honor in 2019 by coaching, developing and leading one of the best teams ever in school history. His 2019 Buckeyes became the first Big Ten team ever to win three consecutive outright Big Ten titles and the team advanced to the College Football Playoffs for the third time in the six-year playoff history. Day’s 13 victories in 2019 are tied for the most by a first-year FBS head coach and he is the first coach to win 13 games without the benefit of a bowl victory. The Buckeyes were ranked among the nation’s Top 5 in 14 of 16 weeks. Individually in 2019, Day coached a third

consecutive Big Ten Quarterback of the Year (Justin Fields) and his program featured the first 2,000-yard running back in school history (J.K. Dobbins), two Heisman Trophy finalists (Fields and Chase Young) – only the sixth time this has been accomplished – and four first-team All-Americans (Wyatt Davis, Dobbins, Jeff Okudah and Young). He was considered for virtually every national coach of the year honor and was named the first-year Coach of the Year by the Football Writers Association of America. In 2020, Fields was named Big Ten Quarterback and Offensive Player of the Year, giving Day four consecutive years with the Big Ten’s top quarterback. Day is a native of Manchester, N.H. He was a three-year starting quarterback at New Hampshire when Chip Kelly was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was a team captain as a senior and earned his degree in business administration in 2002. He has a master’s in administrative studies from Boston College (2004). Day, and his wife, Christina, who uses the nickname “Nina,” have three children: Ryan Jr. or “RJ”, Grace and Ourania or “Nia”.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Ohio State worked two overtimes to rip the national championship from Miami. Maurice Clarett ran 5 yards for the winning score, and the Ohio State’s defense turned back one final Miami bid to tie. The Buckeyes completed an unbeaten run to their first title in 34 years. Down 24-17 in the first OT, Ohio State converted a 4th-and-14 on a pass by Craig Krenzel. The Buckeyes then faced a 4th-and-3 at the 5 when Krenzel threw to the right corner of the end zone for Chris Gamble. A flag was thrown for pass interference and three plays later Krenzel scored from the 1. The Buckeyes took a 14-7 halftime lead, turning two turnovers into touchdowns and extended the margin to 10 on a 44-yard field goal. The Hurricanes closed to 17-14 on Willis McGahee’s 9-yard run to set the stage for Todd Sievers’ 40-yard kick at the end of regulation.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Ohio State’s Ted Ginn Jr. returned the opening kick-off 93 yards for a touchdown, but it was all Florida from there as the No. 2 Gators upset the No. 1 Buckeyes, 41-14, in the BSC National Champi-onship Game. Ginn was injured in the celebration of his opening kickoff return for a touchdown and the Buckeyes could not recover offensively. Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Troy Smith completed 4-of-14 passes for 35 yards and an interception and was sacked five times by the Gators (13-1). Junior tailback Antonio Pittman rushed for 62 yards on 10 carries and his 18-yard touchdown run with 13:32 left in the second quarter brought the score to 21-14 in favor of the Gators, but it would be all the closer the Buckeyes would get. NEW ORLEANS, La. – Making its second straight championship game appearance, Ohio State was unable to contain LSU. The Tigers rallied from an early 10-0 deficit, taking a 24-10 halftime lead. Ohio State had little to celebrate after Chris Wells broke loose for a 65-yard TD run on the fourth play of the game. Todd Boeckman then hit a wide-open Brandon Saine, setting up Ryan Pretorius’ 25-yard field goal. Later, tied at 10, Wells delivered a stiff-arm on a 29-yard romp, and Ohio State seemed poised to retake the lead. Instead, Ricky Jean-Francois crashed through the middle, swung his big right arm and blocked a 38-yard field goal try. Brandon Flynn’s perfect pass to Brandon LaFell in the back left corner of the end zone put the Tigers ahead for good, 17-10.

Ezekiel Elliott was the offensive MVP and ran for 246 yards and four touchdowns. Jones passed for 242 yards, one TD and ran for score. Mariota passed for 333 yards and two touchdowns, but the Ducks’ warp-speed spread offense missed too many red-zone opportunities and couldn’t unleash its running game against Ohio State’s front seven.
