ET TU, BRUTUS?Ohio State heads to southwest Florida looking to use the holidays as a springboard to shake a four-game losing skid, including a pair of back-to-back overtime losses at Minnesota to close out the Buckeyes first half. Ohio State started off the season against three strong opponents, but were not able to muster a win as OSU started the year with seven-straight losses. The Buckeyes won three-consecutive games midway through the first half (one against Mercyhurst and two against Canisius). Junior Nick Schilkey leads the squad with 15 points (8-7-15) and is tied for 35th in the country in points per game (1.07 ppg). The Buckeyes’ offense is 26th in the country with 2.71 goals per game while the defense is struggling to keep opponents off the board, slotted in 48th after yielding 3.36 gpg. Ohio State has the second-lowest winning percentage (3-11-0 / .214) in the country. BC is 4-1 against Ohio State all-time.

FRIAR FOCUSProvidence still has not lost a game after hoisting the 2015 national championship and remains the only team in the first half to go undefeated. The Friars are 12-0-3 and winners of six straight. PC got into a tussle with Boston University, tying the Terriers on consecutive nights in mid November. Miami (Ohio) also tied Providence on Oct. 10. Sophomore defenseman Jake Walman leads the Friars in scoring (11-8-19) and is the nation’s leading scoring defenseman at 1.36 points per game (Walman suffered an injury on Dec. 5). Six of Walman’s goals have come via the power play (T-3rd nationally). PC boasts four scorers amongst the nation’ top 35 (Mark Jankowski - 1.20 ppg - T-21st // Nick Saracino - 1.13 - T-25th // Trevor Mingoia - 1.08 - 34th). Goaltender Nick Ellis is eighth in both goals against average (1.70) and save percentage (.940). The Friars possess a well-balanaced attack, sixth in offense (3.87 gpg) and seventh in defense (1.80 gpg) and are fourth in scoring margin (+2.07). BC is 110-47-13 all-time against Providence.

CORNELL CALLCornell skates into the Florida College Classic on the nation’s fifth-longest unbeaten streak, not having lost in its last seven outings. The Big Red’s only loss came at the hands of Quinnipiac in overtime on Nov. 7. Third-year forward Jeff Kubiak leads Cornell with three goals and eight assists and is tied for 45th in the nation in scoring (1.00 ppg). Freshman blue liner Alec McCrea is 18th in the nation amongst defensemen in scoring (0.73 ppg). Third-year goalie Mitch Gilliam has the nation’s seventh-best goals against average and 12th-best save percentage (.937). Gilliam’s three shutouts have helped Cornell climb to the five spot, nationally, in scoring defense (1.73 gpg) while the Big Red offense is 17th with 3.09 goals per game. Cornell leads Boston College in the overall series, 22-15.

HISTORIC HALF DOZENThatcher Demko matched history after posting six shutouts in seven starts (Oct. 16 - Nov. 8, 2015), stringing together a pair of three-game shutout streaks. Demko’s historic run tied Blaine Lacher of Lake Superior State for posting six shutouts in seven games, marking only the second time in the history of college hockey something of that magnitude has been achieved. Below are the runs posted by each goaltender:

SHUSH.Demko’s first shutout streak started in the third period at Rensselaer on Oct. 11, 2015, where he played shutout hockey for 206 minutes and two seconds (206:02), denoting the 20th-longest stretch of zero goals allowed in the history of the game. Demko’s second run started in the third period of the Denver contest on Oct. 30 and spanned to the second period against Michigan State, surpassing his previous total and posting another 208 minutes and 36 seconds (208:36) of scorelss hockey. That mark is the 17th-best stretch in the history of the game. Demko’s scoreless string of 208:36 is third longest in school history behind Scott Clemmensen (254:23 – Jan. 9-24, 1998) and Cory Schneider (242:19 – Jan. 13-27, 2006).

STANDING TALL AMONGST THE BESTDemko is currently fifth in the nation in goals against average (1.62) and seventh in save percentage (.941) on the year and tied with Quinnipiac’s Michael Garteig shutout mark (6). For a career, the 6-foot-4 backstopper is 48-20-7 (.687) with a 2.09 goals against average and a .926 save percentage (1,973 saves on 2,130 shots). If Demko’s 2.09 GAA held, it would tied with Cory Schneider (2004-07) for the second-best career mark all time. His six shutouts this season is two shy of matching the single-season mark set by Cory Schneider during the 2005-06 season. Demko possesses nine career shutouts, good for fourth-best all-time. He is three blankings shy of matching John Muse’s third-place mark of 12 career shutouts (2007-11). Schneider holds the record with 15 (2004-07) while Scott Clemmensen is second with 13 (1997-2001).

YORK SAYS YES!Boston College has won 13 of its first 16 games of the season, including an unbeaten string of 13. The Eagles’ 11-1 start to the 2015-16 ledger marks the best start under a Jerry York club on The Heights. I AM A REAL AMERICAN ... FIGHT FOR THE RIGHTS OF EVERY MANFreshmen Casey Fitzgerald and Colin White have been selected to attend the U.S. National Junior Team camp to be held at BU’s Agganis Arena from Dec. 15-18. The camp will be used to select the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team that will compete at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship set for Dec. 26 - Jan. 5 in Helsinki, Finland. Fitzgerald did not make the final squad and will rejoin BC in Florida while White was named assistant captain of Team USA.

WHITE HOTFirst-year forward Colin White is on a tear through his first 16 games. The Hanover, Mass., native earned his second Hockey East Rookie of the Week award on Nov. 30 and is currently ninth in the NCAA in scoring, averaging 1.44 points per game. White had his 10-game point streak halted against Notre Dame on Dec. 10 and accounted for 20 points (6-14-20) over the course of that stretch. White is second, nationally, in scoring amongst all rookies (Kyle Connor - 1.47 ppg).

ANGRY WITH THE IRISHNotre Dame’s win on Dec. 10 at Kelley Rink ended Boston College’s 13-game unbeaten streak. The Fighting Irish have won four of the last five contests in Chestnut Hill.

TOPPIN’ OUTDespite the loss against Notre Dame, Boston College has the nation’s third-stingiest defensive corps (1.62 gpg) along with the fourth-ranked offensive production in college hockey (4.31 goals per game.) BC’s scoring margin of 2.69 is about half a goal better than the next-closest team, St. Cloud and Quinnipiac (+2.17).

CHASING ‘49...With the win at UConn on Nov. 24, Boston College was off to its best start in program history since the Eagles’ first national title team in 1949. The 1948-49 national championship squad started the season 10-0 before a loss at Dartmouth on Jan. 27, 1949. BC did not lose again that year, posting a 21-1 mark, culminating in the first national trophy on The Heights under Snooks Kelley. Kelley’s 1940-41 team lost its first game at Yale on Dec, 14, 1940 before the Eagles rattled off the next 13 victories to cap a 13-1 season.

IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUUUUL TIME, OF THE YEARPairwise ranking are already out and as the Eagles play their holiday tournament in Florida, Boston College is eight with an RPI of .5686.

FITZ IN A FLASHRyan Fitzgerald recorded his third two-goal performance of the season against RIT on Nov. 28 and accounted for his third game-winning goal of the season and ninth of his career. He followed with his second short-handed goal of the season at Northeastern on Dec. 6. Fitzgerald is one of 18 skaters in all of college hockey with three game winners this season. He is the first Eagle to 10 goals this season and is tied for 12th in all of college hockey with 1.40 points per game.

LUMBER YARDMiles Wood set the tone early in his Eagle career, posting three points in his BC debut (1-2-3). It has been 15 years since a rookie notched three points in his first-career game. The last time that occurred was when Ben Eaves doled out three assists in a 4-1 win over Notre Dame on Oct. 13, 2000 at Omaha Civic Auditorium. The last time any Eagle started the year with a three-point performance was when Brian Gibbons (2-1-3) and Brock Bradford (1-2-3) both turned the trick against Wisconsin on Oct. 10, 2008. Wood posted a seven game point streak from Nov. 8 to Dec. 6 before missing the Notre Dame game with illness. Wood is the third leading rookie scorer in all of college hockey (1.27 ppg).

GAU-GAU GAUDREAUOne day after having his career-best eight-game point streak snapped (3-9-12), Matthew Gaudreau was the hero at Northeastern on Dec. 6, tipping in his second game-winning tally of the season. He posted a career-best three assists in the RIT win on Nov. 28.

CAPTAIN CLUTCHTeddy Doherty registered a pair of goals at UNH on Nov. 21, including his fourth power play goal of the season. Four of Doherty’s six goals this season have come via the extra man. BC’s captain now has a pair of two-goal performances this season, with his first occurring against Massachusetts on Nov. 3. Doherty’s second strike also counted as the Eagles’ game-winning goal, marking the third of his career and first of the season. Doherty is currently tied for 14th in the nation in power play goals per game (0.29).

PAIR OF PPsBoston College has scored a pair of power play goals on three occassions this year, with the last occurring on Nov. 28 against RIT when defensemen Ian McCoshen and Casey Fitzgerald found the back of the net.

QUICK DRAW CANGEAustin Cangelosi scored 12 seconds into the home opener against Wisconsin, marking the fastest goal scored by an Eagle since Matt Price tallied 11 seconds into the game against Northeastern on March 7, 2008. The Estero, Fla., native scored twice against the Badgers, marking his second-career two-goal outing. His first also came against Wisconsin on Oct. 18, 2013.

HALF DOZEN BAGELSFor the first time in Boston College hockey history and second time in college hockey history, the Eagles shutout six opponents in seven games spanning from Oct. 16 to Nov. 8, 2015. Thatcher Demko backstopped all six of those blankings. The closest BC has ever come to this current record is when the Eagles shutout four teams in six games from Jan. 23 to Feb. 11, 2000.

LIVING HISTORYThe Schiller Family Head Hockey Coach of Boston College, Jerry York, enters his 44th season of coaching college hockey. Not only is York the winningest coach in the game’s history, having amassed 997 victories and a win-loss total of 997-593-105 (.619), York is approaching another historic benchmark. After locking up the most wins all-time at his alma mater (502) and heads into his 22nd season behind the Eagles’ bench, he now has the 1,000-win plateau in his sites. York is just THREE wins away from hitting that number as he is already the winningest coach in the game’s history.

WHADDYA HAVE ON DRAFTBoston College sports the most NHL draft picks of any current college hockey team. The Eagles have 13 student-athletes that have already been drafted by a National Hockey League franchise while Michigan, Minnesota and North Dakota all have 12 on their re-spective teams. Of the eight student-athletes that are first-round draft picks, BC has two dressing in maroon and gold. Alex Tuch (Minnesota) was drafted 18th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft while Colin White (Ottawa) was taken 21st overall in the 2015 Draft.

START SPREADIN’ THE NEWSBoston College and North Dakota will meet in a new marquee event next season, the College Hockey Showdown, on December 3, 2016 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The NCHC will serve as a co-host for the College Hockey Showdown with Madison Square Garden while North Dakota will be designated as the home team. PRESEASON PRECEDENTBoston College was selected as the preseason favorite to win the Hockey East regular-season title as voted on by the league coaches and announced on Sept. 21. The Eagles received 115 overall votes and picked up seven of the league’s 12 first-place votes. The Eagles’ pick as the preseason favorite marks the seventh time in the last eight seasons and the 14th time in the last 17 occasions that BC has been picked as the preseason favorite, or co-favorite, to win the league title.

POLE POSITIONThe Boston College men’s hockey team was tabbed the unit to beat as the Eagles earned the No. 1 preseason ranking in both the USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine polls unveiled on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, respectively. This marks the seventh time the Eagles have been slotted as the top position in the preseason. The last time Boston College was ranked No. 1 in the country was towards the end of the 2013-14 season when the Eagles ran off a 19-game unbeaten mark, winning 17 games and skating to a pair of draws over the course of the run. Boston College finished No. 13 and No. 14, respectively, in the USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine final polls upon conclusion of the 2014-15 season. The Eagles are currently NO. 2 in the USCHO.com poll and No. 3 in the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine poll.

Coaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With the addition of Tommy Cross to the Boston Bruins roster, the Eagles are tied for the most alumni in the NHL for the 2015-16 season with 17 so far

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 18 years. That total is 11 victories more than North Dakota, which has totaled 23 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have the second most wins in college hockey. North Dakota has racked up 489 and Michigan sits at 484 wins.

Jerry York’s overall record is 997-593-106 (.619) in his 44th season as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division 1 coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-12 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.

NCAA Championships in the last 14 years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Frozen Four appearances in the last 18 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (nine), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Recently departed defenseman Noah Hanifin and incoming freshman forward Colin White were selected by the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators, respectively (fifth and 21st overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 16th and 17th Eagles in the last 28 years to have been drafted in the first round of the NHL. They join Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves (29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010), Michael Matheson (23rd, 2012) and Alex Tuch (18th, 2014) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Ian McCoshen and Thatcher Demko returned as members of the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Montreal and Toronto, Canada, while Noah Hanifin and Alex Tuch earned their spot for the first time. Incoming freshman Miles Wood was also a member, upping BC’s representation to five Eagles on last year’s squad. With the addition of Hanifin, Tuch and Wood, the BC trio became the 25th, 26th and 27th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

BC has competed in five of the last 10 national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).
