In the 1880’s swimming was incredibly popular as it is still today. In 1887, having been concerned with the safety of swimmers for many years prior, the Royal Humane Society - United Kingdom approached William Henry, a talented swimmer at the time, to undertake the instruction of rescues, restoration of life (now known as resuscitation) and competitions. Swimming clubs at the time were asked to print lifesaving rules, give demonstrations of rescues and participate in competitions. However, it was not until 1891 that a meeting of persons interested in swimming (including William Henry) then formed the committee in London that was to become the Royal Life Saving Society. Within three years of the formation of the Society in London, the first branch outside the United Kingdom was formed in Sydney, Australia in 1894. Lifesavers in Australia held rescue demonstrations and competitions which allowed them to compete against each other similar to those held in the United Kingdom in the early 1880’s. Lifesavers used these events to enhance their drills and skills. In 1965 the Royal Life Saving Society held the first Australian Pool Life Saving Championships. Each of the trophies presented at the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships have been named after a pivotal member of Royal Life Saving in the United Kingdom and Australia who helped to support and teach others the importance of the rescue skills we practice and compete in today. The Australian Pool Life Saving Championships were originally held biennially and in 1983 the first Royal Life Saving team competed at an international competition - the Asia Pacific Lifesaving Championships held in Brisbane. The first annual Australian Pool Life Saving Championships were held in 1987 in Alice Springs, Northern Territory and are normally held in January each year. Royal Life Saving’s motto, as stated by Roman philosopher Seneca, sums up the purpose of lifesaving skills and Lifesaving sport to this day ‘Quemcunque Miserum Videris Hominem Scias’ meaning ‘Whomsoever you see in distress recognise in him a fellow man’ – if you see someone in trouble, do your best to help – and you can do a great deal more if you’ve been trained.

The Victorian Government is proud to support the 2017 Australian Pool Life Saving Championships, another date on our State’s events calendar that is the envy of the world.
Victoria lives and breathes sport. We’re home to some of the biggest events in the world including the Australian Open tennis, the AFL Grand Final and the Boxing Day Test.
We’re delighted to stage the 2017 Australian Pool Life Saving Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, showcasing Australia’s best talent at one of our state’s top sporting venues.
The Championships will provide Australia’s elite pool lifesavers with the opportunity to test their ability against each other in events that simulate real life saving situations. The Championships are also a key selection event for Australia’s three national teams – the open “Aussie Barra’s”, the “Silver Barra’s” (under 19 development team) and the ”Junior Barra’s” (under 16 development team).
With members from the Australian Lifesaving and Youth Lifesaving Teams who competed at the recent World Lifesaving Championships in the Netherlands registering for the Championships, competitors and spectators can look forward to three days of action-packed competition and a great atmosphere with something for everyone.
The Victorian Government is proud to have provided support to Royal Life Saving Society – Australia through the Significant Sporting Events Program to stage this fantastic event.
Events like these provide an opportunity to shine the spotlight on Victoria and our world-class sports and entertainment venues.
Significant events not only build on our reputation as the sporting capital of the world but further our standing as a multicultural, inclusive, and liveable State.I invite all our guests to experience all the delights Victoria has to offer starting with our sporting capital Melbourne, voted the world’s most liveable city 6 years in a row. I wish all visitors, competitors and officials a safe and exciting 2017 Australian Pool Life Saving Championships and an enjoyable stay here in Victoria.
Hon John Eren MPMinister for Sport, Tourism and Major EventsVictorian Government
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2017 APLSC here at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on behalf of the National Sports Committee.
From a personal perspective it is always nostalgic to return to Melbourne as it was here that I took part in my first Championships in 1981. As part of the Tasmanian team we took part in a vastly different event, centred as it was around the performance of a set program of rescue and resuscitation drills and skills. To say that we were unsuccessful is a momentous understatement. The Men’s team had amassed a score of over 400 penalty points with the next closest team on, I think, 180 points.
But it’s not our performance that I remember most but the people that I met there, competitors and officials alike, who have become lifelong friends and stalwarts of the Royal Life Saving Society. It wasn’t the prospects of winning the 1983 event in Brisbane that motivated us to train and fundraise but the opportunity to travel and meet with friends and to test ourselves, primarily, against ourselves. We did get better - eventually - with the Women’s team winning the R&R when we hosted the 1985 Championships in Hobart. I am hopeful that you establish and reconnect with friends in lifesaving from around Australia and the world at this event.
The APLSC is a serious competitive event producing a constant stream of world class competitors as evident by the results of our participants at the 2016 World Lifesaving Championships held in the Netherlands. Albeit, that we were again bested by what is fast becoming a legendary New Zealand team, there is much to be excited about if the number of personal best times, some being world records, set by individual competitors in the pool is anything to go by. The process of preparation for our home World Championships in Adelaide in 2018 has started and will include the 2018 APLSC in January as an opportunity for all competitors intending to take part to familiarise themselves with the venue and the City.
The 2017 APLSC also marks the end of Roz Grey’s current period as the Chief Referee. Roz has done an amazing job trademarked by her seemingly unflustered personal style, although I am sure that as with ducks much is going on under the water. She will be missed in the role but I am sure that it will free her up to undertake others and continue in her mentoring of a new crop of national officials. Thank you Roz from all of us.
Good luck with your own endeavours this week. I look forward to some fierce racing, many records breaking and the enjoyment that comes from doing this all with friends.

The Royal Life Saving Society was first established in Australia in 1894. Since the early days, there have been a number of events that have allowed lifesavers to compete against each other in an effort to enhance their drills and skills. From 1965 until 1987 the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships were held biennially. The modern era of lifesaving sees the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships held on an annual basis, normally during January each year.
