E D I T O R I A L FLASHL IGHT DRAGS
Welcome Back! Thanks to the Greene County Commissioners for inviting us back again this year.
The Flashlight Drag Crew is happy to have the longest winter that I can remember —behind us. During that long winter, the Airport started a
building project, only to be delayed by Old Man Winter. The good news is that we are here and racing. If you are new to the races, hopefully you won’t be able to tell that we had to make changes to the layout of the Flashlight Drags. For the regulars, please help us work through the changes.
Changes? Yes, once again we have a few new ideas that we want to try. Based on racer feedback, we eliminated the Big Dog Class. However, we also recognize that these cars also want to race. To be fair to the true street cars, tuners and trucks, the old Big Dog cars are now called Outlaws. And they will have there own event immediately following the traditional four hours of the Flashlight Drags. The new event is called the Outlaw Hour. It will run from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Spectators will get two shows for the price of one.
So, please sit back and enjoy the season with us. And as always, we welcome your feedback. And make sure to follow us on Facebook.
On behalf of the Flashlight Drag Crew, I extend our appreciation to all of you. Be Safe. Have Fun.

lane 25 MPH
How does this work? How do I fi nd someone to race? These are the two most often asked questions at the Flash-light Drags. Finding a race partner isn’t hard … someone will usually fi nd you. When you are ready to race and if you don’t have a race partner, simply drive up to the staging lane and follow the signs to Singles Lane. This lane is set aside for racers who don’t have a partner or for the person who just wants the thrill of racing, they are happy to race anyone who pulls up next to them at the starting line. It’s just like “street racing.”
Rain Out PolicyAll Sunday Rain Outs will be rescheduled based upon an agreeable schedule with the county. We will try for the following Sunday.
If the event gets rained out after we start, keep your num-bered armband for admission for the following Sunday. No one will be admitted free of charge without a rain check armband.
You’re an Outlaw if —
• Your hood is higher than your roof
• You have a plastic windshield and no side glass
• You need three people to help you get the car started and to get it to the starting line
Registration for the Outlaw Hour: 11:30 am to 5:00 pm – Cost $25
Test and Tune during the Flashlight Drags is available. You must pay the Flashlight Drag entry fee for test and tune. Details will be explained at the general 1:30 pm driver’s meeting.
A second MANDATORY driver’s meeting will take place at 5:00 pm.
PROCEDURES
• Ladder is set by registration time (First in, fi rst on the ladder, last to arrive, last on the ladder)
• Your car must be able to race in back-to-back races (no returning to the Pits, these are still “street cars”)
• Slicks are allowed• Open Headers allowed• Driver door must open (on Dragsters)• Payout 50% of entry fee paid out that day, the remaining
50% paid-out at the end of the season• Points will be awarded and tracked throughout the
season• NO ALCHOL to be consumed by the driver during the day• Altered Gas Events reserves to right to eject any driver
and car from the event as we see fi t (think safety here)• Run what you brung … and you better hope you brought
enough• No CryingMore details will be spelled out during the MANDATORY driver’s meeting at 5:00 PM

JUNK YARDJewel Part 2 — of the Backyard Builder Series
Choosing a cover story for the season opener of the Flashlight Drags Program is never easy, neither is building a ’34 Dodge Hot Rod Pick Up Truck from junk
yard parts. Bill Slagel did it, and for the most part, I will let the photographs tell the story.
You won’t see this vehicle racing down the runway, but you’ll recognize Bill and his daughter, Lisa. They rarely miss a race. Bill is a master builder. Over the years, he’s built all sorts of unusual projects including his racecars, car hauler, and now this ’34 Dodge, just to name a few.
When Bill told me about this project, I grabbed Dan Dishart, our resident photographer, and we paid a visit to Bill’s garage. We couldn’t believe the resourcefulness of this guy. We also couldn’t believe the end product.
I have to list the junk yard parts here that Bill salvaged to build this truck. It is absolutely astonishing. You will be able to identify many of them in the photos.

Modifi cations • Chevy 427 Tall Block bored and stroked to 496• 400 Turbo transmission with trans brake• 9” Ford rear end with 3.50 gears• Frame is homemade tubing frame• Homemade aluminum bed among many other parts
All of the work was done by my father, Bill Slagel.
Driver Profi le:For twenty years I have co-owned a car and truck rental franchise along with a quick oil service sta-tion. I have been doing the FLDs for about 6 years now and it has been a whole lot of fun. Everyone you meet is so friendly. Some of the best races I have had have been the ones that I’ve lost, so it’s really about having a good time and being safe. Forget bracket racing and handicaps, heads-up street racing is real drag racing.
Likes - I can go challenge someone to a drag race, and not worry about sirens pulling up behind me … not that its ever happened before.
Dislikes – I miss Zelienople!
