Chapter Luncheon

COL Jack Jones, Celebration of Life

This month on Friday, October 13th our Chapter will hold a joint luncheon/meeting with the Central Coast Chap-ter of MOAA to honor the life of COL Jack Jones. COL Jones, PhD, USA (Ret), served as a chapter department and region commander for MOWW and was former-ly the Commander-in-Chief of the Military Order of the World Wars nationally. He was also member and past president of the Central California Coast Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America. A full copy of COL Jones Obituary is attached within this Newsletter.

BiographyCOL Jack B. Jones, PhD, USA (Ret)

Jack was born in New Mexico, raised in El Paso, Texas; Tucson, AZ; and Brawley, CA where he graduated from high school. He attended Compton and Whittier Colleges during which time he enlisted in the Califor-nia National Guard. At the start of the Korean War he was sent to Ford Ord, CA and subsequently to Officer Training Schools at Fort Benning, GA. He attended and graduated from the first all-officers Ranger course. He served as platoon leader, company executive officer, infantry company commander, and various battal-ion staff officer positions. His overseas assignments were in Okinawa and the Philippines.

He served 40 years active and reserve duty with the Army in various command and staff assignments during his career and retired in 1987. His last assignment was Deputy Chief of Staff with the 351st Civil Affairs Command.

Following active duty, Jack attanded UC Santa Barbara where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Speech and Master of Arts Degree. His Doctoral Degrees were from University of Arizona and California Western University.

Jack’s career extended to law enforcement where he was a Detective & Reserve Commander with the Santa Barbara Police Department and Juvenile Detective & Reserve Commander with the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Department. He also was a Professor Emeritus at Cal Poly for many years.

Jack was a founding member of our General Hoyt S. Vanderberg Chapter of the MOWW and served as Commander as well as in many other roles over the years. The chapter actively participates in support of ROTC and JROTC programs as well as support of Boy and Girl Scouts, and Law and Order.

Jack was the 75th National Commander-In-Chief (CINC) Military Order of the World Wars. He served in many capacities in the regional and national MOWW organization. The photograph shows him in his CINC Dress Uniform.

Jack was involved in many local organizations including the Veterans Museum in San Luis Obispo as well as the Califor-nia Coast Chapter of the MOAA (Past President) to name a couple. He had a love of his fellow veterans, veteran pro-grams, and our local youth. He touched the lives of, and will be greatly missed by, many people. Hopefully Jack, we can continue to “Lead the Way” and “Never Falter”. God Speed our Friend.

Hopefully Jack, we can continue to “Lead the Way” and “Never Falter”. God Speed our Friend.

As your newly installed Commander of the Hoyt Vanderberg Chapter, I will work closely with the Executive Committee on matters of Chapter concern and especially to take a close look at the previously indenti-fied Chapter goals to ensure that we zero in on those that most closely identify with our profesional aims and goals. As these are identified, I shall be sharing them with our members to seek support in achieving them.

As most of you know, Caroline Janney, loving wife of Lt. Ron Janney passed away at their home in Tem-pleton on September 13, 2017. Born in Detroit, Michigan, she and Ron were married in Toledo in 1976 and eventually moved to San Luis Obispo county in 2000. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and brother Charles Peterson. A Celebration of her life was held at the United Methodist Church in Atascadero on September 30th. Our prayers and good wishes go the Janney family.

Commander’S Message: LTC Louis Stout, USA (Ret)

With the passing of our dear friend and companion Col Jack Jones, I felt oligated to at least temporarily assume the duties (still haven’t figured out what they are!). When Joe Brocato resigned as Region com-mander for personal reasons, I briefly moved up and was soon replaced by Lt Col David Worley USAF (Ret) who was sworn in as Region XIV Commander. Lt Col Worley agreed to and was sworn in as the Re-gion XIV Commander. Dave immediately took a strong leadership role for the region. He has conducted teleconferences and many phone and email contacts in the short period of time he has been in office. He has quickly established himself as a strong dedicated leader. Subsequently, Lt Col Worley as Regional Commander contacted CWO-4 Pat Clark (Monterey) to conduct the offical swearing in of our Chapter officers on 20 September, last. Pat was kind enough to allocate his time and talent to accomplishing this very important ritual. The formal roster of Chapter officers will be noted elsewhere. As Lt Ron Janney, who up to this point had filled in as acting commander and had been conducting our meetings was not able to attend this meeting due to his wife’s illness; I substitued and conducted the meeting. I was blessed with the strong support of others as the meeting progressed. Of major importance was the induction of LTC Louis Stout U. S. Army (Ret) as the new commander of the GEN Hoyt Vanderberg Chapter. Please note the new commander’s comments elsewhere.

Sergeant-At-Arms Remarks: MAJ Jim Murphy, USMC (Ret)

Chaplains CornerMaj James Murphy is a Lay Minister in the Episcopal Church and in lieu of our Chaplain’s comments, he offers the following for our consideration: I almost missed a significant date. September 22nd was the Autumnal Equinox - the beginning of fall. It was another day in the eternal way of things established by God in the creation of our world. It is like the ongoing days and nights, the Apostle Paul mentioned it in his letter to the Galatians, “You observe days and months and seasons and years.” He also wrote to the Romans: One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike.” In some parts of the world, the date is of little significance. But, in the upper half of the northern hemi-sphere, it is meaningful. Normally it signifies the changing of the climate from the heat of summer to the cooling of the fall, leading, of course, to the chill of winter. Those of us living in the northern portion of the U.S. experience the great changing of the seasons, from the heat and sunshine of the summer to the snow and clouds of winter. Even in the tropics there are the rainy and dry seasons. One needs to seriously consider the tilt of the earth on it axis. If it were not for this factor, we would not have seasons! The earth would face the sun exactly the same all the time. The bottom line is that God established the ongoing seasons for us. It contributes to the annual growing of crops. Rather that grumble about the excessive heat or cold of a particular season, we should praise God for his unfathomable creation where so much depends on the everychanging seasons.
