The <h1> is also not MSDE house style – it should be left justified, Arial, 22 pt. This is center justified, Chicago, 22 pt. Because Content Creator choose to use a page layout that doesn’t automatically generate the <h1> page headline from the PageHeadline field in the template, it’s okay to add the Headline manually in this case. However, it still should be MSDE style.

This is a rotating gif file. The alt text must include the text that appears on each photo. Example: Alt=”3 photos in rotation: Brian Quinn Maryland's 2018-2019 Milken National Winner. 2018-2019 Maryland Teachers of the Year. 2018-2019 Blue Ribbon Award Winners.”

Photos should not be designed as headings.

Paragraphs are not headings and shouldn’t be tagged as headings. MSDE house style for paragraphs is 14 pt Arial regular, not bold.

Should be designated either <h2> or <h3>.

Videos should not be designated as headings.

Having Youtube “automatically” caption a video should be a 2-step process: 1. Youtube guesses what people are saying and makes that into one run-on sentence with no punctuation or capitalization. 2. Human being corrects the inaccurate guess and adds punctuation and capitalization. These videos have only had Step 1.

Videos also need a companion Visual Description/transcript document that describes what’s going on in the video along with what people are saying.

This video has no captions at all, not even inaccurate auto-captions like the others. Video must be captioned. Video also needs a companion Visual Description/transcript document that describes what’s going on in the video along with what people are saying.

These logos are being used as buttons/links to other pages. Therefore, all four need alt text that includes the text displayed in the graphics and/or describes where clicking the link will take the user. Alt text should never be the name of the graphics file. Example:

· Maryland Teacher of the Year. Educating the Future. · Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools. A program of the Maryland State Department of Education. · Milken Educator Awards. The future belongs to the educated. · Teachers of Promise.

All four links should be tagged consistently, either as headings or not headings.

Page Headline has been hand coded in the Main_Content area and left blank in the PageHeadline field (possibly accidentally, since it appears in PageKeywords, which generally stays blank). Put headline in PageHeadline and remove from Main_Content area.

This is not MSDE house style for an <h2>. <h2> should be Arial 18 pt bold left justified, not Bookman Old Style bold center justified. Elements on MarylandPublicSchools.org should not be Serif fonts (Bookman, Times, Chicago, etc.)

If “Presenting,” “Platinum” and “Gold” are subsets under “Teacher of the Year,” they should be designated <h3> -- Arial 16 pt bold left justified.

Designate these unordered lists as bullet lists using the Word ribbon. This will help the screen reading software user to know if they should expect 4 entries in the list or 400 before starting to read it.

[No headline on this page] http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/partners/Pages/Blue-Ribbon/index.aspx

No <h1> page headline at the top of the page because PageHeadline field wasn’t filled in. Pages must contain an <h1> headline generated automatically by the PageHeadline field.

Paragraphs are not headings and shouldn’t be tagged as headings. MSDE house style for paragraphs is 14 pt Arial regular, not bold.

On some of the pages, this information is formatted left justified. On others, it is centered. They should be consistent across the site. MSDE house style is left justified.

Suggestion: Information would be easier to read and more polished looking as a bulleted list. Photos.

A user who can operate a mouse sees this.

A user who cannot operate a mouse gets this, which is barely legible and fails the color contrast test.

This widget is in use throughout MarylandPublicSchools.org. Work with the Web Manager to find an alternate widget that behaves the same for all users.

Delete these blank <h1> lines. A page can only have one <h1> (the page headline) or it will fail multiple automated code checking tests.

2019 Tours of Excellence http://test.msde.maryland.gov/partners/Pages/Blue-Ribbon/excellence.aspx

Pages must contain an <h1> headline generated automatically by the PageHeadline field. Put “2019 Tours of Excellence” in the PageHeadline field and delete hand-coded <h1> from the Main_Content area.

Remove all the blank heading lines. The purpose of designating something as a heading is not so it will put blank space in your format. Because screen reading software may read each of these blank lines as “Heading Level 4: blank” only actual headings should be designated as headings.

Could use a Heading (e.g., <h3>Resources</h3>) and a bulleted list.

Needs inaccurate autocaptioning edited and needs visual description document. See Page 3 for full explanation.

Remove all the blank heading lines. The purpose of designating something as a heading is not so it will put blank space in your format. Because screen reading software may read everyone of these blank lines as “Heading Level 3: blank” only actual headings should be designated as headings. Additionally, a page can only have one <h1> (the page headline) or it will fail multiple automated code checking tests.

Either make the name of all the school districts <h3> or remove the <h3> from AACPS.

Maryland Blue Ribbon School 2016-2017 http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/partners/Pages/Blue-Ribbon/2016-2017BRS/2016-State-Board-Photos.aspx

Pages must contain an <h1> headline generated automatically by the PageHeadline field. Put “Maryland Blue Ribbon School 2016-2017” in the PageHeadline field and delete hand-coded <h1> from the Main_Content area.

Photos don’t get designated as Headings.

None of the photos on this page have alt text. Alt text should be in the form of: Alt=”14 staff and faculty from Generic Elementary School accept their Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools award from State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen B. Salmon and Maryland School Board President John Doe.”

[No headline on this page] http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/partners/Pages/Blue-Ribbon/2016-2017BRS/2016---2017-Blue-Ribbon-Dinner-.aspx

No <h1> page headline at the top of the page because PageHeadline field wasn’t filled in. Pages must contain an <h1> headline generated automatically by the PageHeadline field.

The captions on this page are great! If the photos weren’t active links (click on them and a larger version appears), you could legitimately make alt=”” because the information is in the caption. However, since these are being used like buttons, they do need alt text that says where they go. Something like: Alt=”Shipley’s Choice. Click for higher quality photo.”

Note: The 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 versions of the Blue Ribbon pages appear to be constructed using the same format. The concerns from 2016-2017 testing should be addressed when working with 2017-2018 and 2018-2019, as well.

Not MSDE house style. <h2> should be Arial 18pt bold, not Trebuchet 25pt bold.

MSDE house style is Arial, not Tahoma.

No alt text. Alt text should be something like: Alt=”State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen B. Salmon, Executive Director of the MSDE Office of Partnerships Dr. Darla Strouse, Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jack Smith, and staff and faculty from East Silver Spring Elementary School help Milken Award Winner Brian Quinn hold up a giant check from the Milken Family Foundation for $25,000.”

MSDE house style is Arial, not Tahoma. And for paragraphs is Arial regular, not Tahoma bold.

Milken National Educator Award Program http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/partners/Pages/Milken/200809_SLandefeld.aspx Pages that are all about an annual event, where only the names and years change, should try to be consistent across all pages. This is a good one to try to emulate. There are only a few minor issues to address:

The page headline is coming from PageHeadline, which is where it should be. I might suggest putting the year in the PageHeadline, so you don’t end up with 20 page that have the same headline.

Put the date in the <h1> and make Maggie Hawk an <h2>.

Alt=” Milken Educator Awards. The future belongs to the educated.”

This is good alt text. Dr. Strouse and Dr. Smith could be added, but the basics are there.

Make “In the News” an <h3>. One issue: Article is about “2014-2015 Maggie Hawk’ – why is the file name “200809 – Slandifield” ? Upon further research, I see that this nearly perfect page was redone in the new headline-free and other issues format. I will add her new page to the list:

Note: All of the Milken Award Winner pages should be redone with 200809–Slandifield.aspx as the format. As currently formatted (without a Headline), all of them will fail the automated code checking tests.

Every line of content on this page is designated as a heading. The headings on this page are the names of the counties.
