Refugee Outreach Com-

mittee Advent Message As we conclude 2017 and prepare for

the celebration of Christmas, the Refu-

gee Outreach Committee shares two re-

flections from Pope Francis.

We are called to reach out to those who

find themselves in the existential periph-

eries of our societies and to show par-

ticular solidarity with the most vulner-

able of our brothers and sisters: the poor,

the disabled, the unborn and the sick,

migrants and refugees, the elderly and

the young who lack employment.

I would like to ask you all to see a ray of

hope as well in the eyes and hearts of

refugees and of those who have been

forcibly displaced. A hope that is ex-

pressed in expectations for the future, in

the desire for friendship, in the wish to

participate in the host society also

through learning the language, access to

employment and the education of chil-

dren. I admire the courage of those who

hope to be able gradually to resume a

normal life, waiting for joy and love to

return to brighten their existence. We

can and must all nourish this hope!

Our ministry at St. Joseph’s will con-

tinue in 2018 given this update from

UNHCR.

There are 65.6 million forcibly displaced

persons world-wide, 22.5million of

which are refugees. Of those, 17.5 mil-

lion are under UNHCR's mandate

(UNHCR employs 10,966 staff members

working in 130 countries).

The ROC thanks our generous commu-

nity and extends warm Christmas

wishes.

Supporting Refugees –

How can you help? In January, the Ottawa Mennonite Refugee

Assistance (OMRA), with the support of our

Refugee Outreach Committee, will initiate

their grocery card program at St. Joe’s. You

will be able to purchase cards from

Loblaws, Independent, Metro, Food Basics,

and Farm Boy in various denominations.

When you buy the grocery cards, you will

be able to use the full value of the card to

buy your groceries. The stores give a small

percentage of the value of each card sold to

OMRA. OMRA uses these funds to subsi-

dize rental costs for refugee families in Ot-

tawa. We currently subsidize rent for six

refugee families and plan to offer subsidy to

at least four additional families in 2018.

Keep an eye on the upcoming January bulle-

tins for more information about how to get

involved. Please contact Donna Rietschlin at

[email protected] or 613-715-9797

if you have any questions.

Poinsettia Donations Give a Christmas flower in honour of, or in memory of, a loved one!

Community members are invited to bring poinsettias and other Christmas flowers to help decorate

the church for Christmas. Many donate in honour of someone special, or in memory of someone

who has died. The list of names of those being honoured or remembered will be published in our Christmas

bulletin on the weekend of Dec. 23/24. Please drop off flowers (or monetary donations) at the Welcome Desk

or at the Front Office. Be sure to include: “In honour of….” or “In memory of…” with flowers.

2018 Donation Envelopes—Next year’s donation envelopes are available at the back of the

church before and after masses this weekend. They can also be picked up at the Front Office during the

week. Please note that some numbers have changed, so do not be surprised if you do not have the same box

number as last year. If you do not yet use envelopes to donate, please contact the Front Office to be assigned a box or

consider donating through auto-debit. Visit the Welcome Desk to find out how.

Some Thoughts on the Oblate

Community Celebration—On December 8,

2017, many parishioners of

St. Joseph’s Parish attended

the Oblate Community

Celebration of the Feast of

the Immaculate Conception

at Canadian Martyrs

Church. We thank all the

organizers and Fr. Jim Fiori

OMI for their hospitality.

Many thanks to McE

Galbreath, the Ontario Dis-

trict administrator, for ex-

tending the invitation to all

St. Joseph’s parishioners. Fr. Jim is leaving Ottawa to be-

come Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Keewatin-Le Pas.

Over the decades, Fr. Jim has been engaged in many different

types of ministry, including Oblate formation in Kenya in his

role as Superior, he ran a retreat house in Winnipeg and has

worked with Indigenous populations in northern Saskatche-

wan and Manitoba. Prior to the creation of OMI Lacombe

Canada, Fr. Jim served as Provincial for the Manitoba Oblate

Province. We wish him the very best in his new ministry, as

we do to Fr. Tim Coonen OMI, who becomes Pastor of Cana-

dian Martyrs.
