Help stop the senseless violence.

On a block that once teemed with

drug houses, houses of prostitution,

derelict houses, abandoned buildings

and underground storage tanks, there

will emerge A BEACON OF HOPE IN A

NEIGHBORHOOD OF DESPERATION,

the Morningstar Youth and Family Life

Center. This corner will be remembered

for 6 murders in one weekend and a mock

cemetery with white crosses recognizing the

youth who had been murdered there.

We’re building a a safe place for children to play!

The center will help children stay in school.

The center will keep kids out of gangs.

Our sports programs will keep kids off drugs.

The land is cleared and we’re ready to build!

With your help, we can offer hope to our at risk youth.

We’re Ready!

The ground has now been cleared, the houses that had been deep in needles so that one could not walk without boots have been torn down, derelict buildings torn down, and the land has been cleaned of pollutants so that it is now ready for the future; it is “shovel ready”. Plans have been drawn, an architect and a builder have been selected and we are ready to build the center.

This center will house a gymnasium, rooms for teaching computer skills, rooms for helping with homework, for teaching music skills, and a group of mentors ready to help with remedial reading, writing and life skills. When youth are not using these facilities, they will be used by seniors and neighborhood residents, an island of hope and safety while bullets are flying outside.To address safety, the Kansas City Police Department has agreed to house a Community Policing Center there. Police cars will be parked outside on 27th Street in full view.

Application has been made to the city for a major commitment from a block grant, and solicitation calls have begun among the city’s principal philanthropic organizations. $6 Million is needed to complete the project.

We who are involved with the project are deeply appreciative that the Kansas City Chiefs Children’s Fund is adopting our project this year in order to increase awareness and, hopefully, interest donors to commit funds so that we can begin construction this year and, with good fortune, complete it this year.
