On probably the sunniest Saturday of the year so far, the wedding of Amber-Rose Anderson and Nathan Phillips saw smiles all round. Amber-Rose arrived in a car, traditionally bedecked with ribbons and driven by stepdad Ben. The couple’s two boys, Jacob and Finlay, were smartly dressed in grey waistcoat suits setting off the full-length lilac dresses of the bridesmaids, Kavita Hall, and Rebecca Sewell.Jacob proudly carried the wedding rings to the front, before passing them to the best men, Ryan Johnson and Johnny Younghusband. The flower girl, Layla Anderson looked delight-ful in a full length white

princess dress as she scat-tered petals along the aisle in front of the bride.Walked down the aisle by her Mam, Sharon Anderson, Amber-Rose was attired in a stunning full length ball gown style dress, with embroidered bodice and a diamanté buckle. She carried a bouquet of white and lilac silk roses. Reverend David conducted the service and as the brand-new Mr and Mrs Phillips were announced the cheers erupted across the church. Following photographs by L. C. Photography, the couple and their guests moved on to Bishop Auckland where the party began.

The contents of 42 Jubilee Road, including what the local authority classified as ‘noxious matter’ were emptied into the property’s garden last week.

Filthy house contents dumped into garden

Residents of Shildon’s Jubilee Road were appalled to wake up on Thursday morning last week and discover that the filthy contents of a home in the street had been emptied by its private landlord into the garden, just yards from a local primary school set to reopen this week after the summer holidays. The house had previously been the subject of a police investigation when its oc-cupiers were suspected of being involved in drug dealing and production.Members of the public re-sponded on social media with incredulity and frus-

tration at the sight, many critical of the role of private landlords. “Absolutely shocking. They should be fined,” said one, while another said: “Jubilee Road never used to be like that years ago,” a fact borne out by images of the street on Google Street View from nine years ago, which show that one half of the property’s garden wall has since been demolished.Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbour-hoods and local partner-ships, said: “We were made aware of a large quantity of household waste, includ-ing material potentially

harmful to public health, in the garden of a property in Shildon.“We visited the site and made contact with the landlord who informed us that he was in the process of emptying the property of waste left by a tenant.“The landlord told us he had arranged for a registered carrier to collect the rubbish and that he had put it in the garden to facilitate this.“We worked with the landlord to bring about the removal of the waste at the earliest opportunity.”The waste was removed from the garden the follow-ing day.

on their new day. Waste left next to rubbish bins after 20th October will not be collected. Surplus recyclable materi-als should be put in clear bags only and left next to recycling bins on new col-lection days. Black bags are assumed to contain waste and therefore not picked up in recycling col-lections.Oliver Sherratt, the council’s head of direct services, said: “We are continuing to streamline our rubbish and recycling collection routes to make them more efficient. “Previous changes to routes in other parts of the county have worked well and residents have adapted to their new ar-rangements with ease.“We will be supporting residents in Sedgefield, Teesdale and Wear Valley to ensure these changes go through smoothly.“All affected households will be written to directly to explain the change to their collection arrange-ments.”Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for

neighbourhoods and local partnerships, added: “We appreciate bin collection changes may cause some small inconvenience in the short term as residents adapt to new bin days or collection weeks.“I’d encourage residents to read their letters and calendars carefully so they know which day to put their bins out.“Those who are affected should put their bin out as usual, by 7am, on their normal collection day until the changes come in on 9th October.”Bin collection calen-dars can be downloaded electronically. Residents should enter their house number and postcode into the ‘My Durham’ section of www.durham.gov.uk.Residents can find out about recycling, ordering of replacement bins, re-porting a missed collec-tion or booking to have bulky waste picked up, online at www.durham.gov.uk/recycling.For locations and opening times of household waste recycling centres, visit w w w.durham.gov.uk/hwrc or call 03000 261 000.

New All Saints Scouts have outgrown the Mission Hall, their base for the past 26 years, and have now moved to larger premises at Jubilee Fields Community Centre.

Scouts leave Mission Hall for Jubilee Fields

From Friday 8th Septem-ber, New Shildon All Saints Scouts will meet in their new home at Jubilee Fields Community Centre. With the continued interest in scouting, the group has outgrown the Mission Hall on Chapel Street, which had been its base for the last 29 years. The move into much larger premises will enable the group to continue to grow and offer more places to children from the age of five.Wolf Cub Master, Andrew Bowman said: “Worldwide, scouting is still the largest uniformed mixed youth organisation, open to both boys and girls.“At All Saints Scouts we continue to offer tradi-tional scouting, ensuring all our members are kept busy, active and happy with lots of fun as they work their way through the various training pro-grammes. Scouting is about teamwork, adven-ture and friendship. “Scouting also provides those who attend the op-portunity to take part in an array of adventurous

activities. “Our youngest members in Beavers (ages 5-8) are kept busy and bright as they learn about their local community, their county and country and the wider world by visiting local public services and places of interest. “Between the ages of 8 and 11 the adventure begins as Wolf Cubs are encour-aged through training to become better citizens, to work together in team activities, to explore their environment and to help each other to succeed.“Finally Scouts, which is for children age 11 upwards. A significant part of the Scout programme revolves around the great outdoors; using skills learned to

enjoy camping, hiking, survival and cooking. “Fun and adventure is at the heart of everything we do. “It is the single most im-portant thing that sets Scouts apart. “We believe that through the everyday adventure of Scouting, young people and adult volunteers regu-larly experience new chal-lenges that enrich their lives and meet lifelong friends.“Anyone who is interested, or even mildly curious and wants to know a little more, please talk to any of the section leaders. We meet on Friday nights, from 6pm until 8pm at Jubilee Fields Community Centre.”

The sign is very much in the modern vogue for ‘words as art’, popular in people’s homes

The sign of an active church

Two new posters put into the sign board outside Saint John’s Church caused a bit of a stir this week with several people passing comment. ‘I’ve never seen a church sign like that before’ laughed one man, ‘usually they are all repent, or doom and gloom’. The sign which was drawing the comment is very much in the modern vogue for ‘words as art’, popular in people’s homes. We have all seen the ‘Love, Laugh Live’ that is everywhere these days. Based on a design spotted by Revd. David while down south it

reads ‘At Saint John’s we do real, we do mistakes, we do I’m sorry, we do forgiveness, we do prayer, we do worship, we do love, we do family.’ Revd David explained; “Sometimes people think that church is about shutting people out through confusing ritual and rites, when really it is about saying, ‘come let’s travel together because we are just people.’ I hope in the new poster we are communicating some of that, and that people realise that church is really all about people, people just like us.”

A Scammell Crusader CR100 heavy haulage tractor unit will be one of the Scammell trucks on show at Locomo-tion this weekend.

Local children’s author hosts Scammell trucks at LocomotionThere will be horsepower other than steam this Saturday, 9th September at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon. In association with Shildon writer Stuart Bird, author of the Scammell Stories children’s book series, Locomotion presents a display of five Scammell trucks and will feature some of the most impres-sive vehicles that were built by the company.Scammell Lorries Ltd was a British manufacturer of trucks, particularly specialist and military off-highway vehicles, from 1921 to 1988. Mr Bird said: “This will be chance for everybody to get close to a Scammell. “One of the trucks attend-ing will be a Crusader CR 100 heavy haulage tractor unit.“This was designed by Scammell to haul a load of approximately 100 tons.”The show starts at 10am and finishes at 4.30pm.Locomotion is open from

The introduction of new management arrange-ments would enable a popular County Durham museum to develop and attract increased visitors, councillors will hear next week.A report on the proposed changes at Locomotion: the National Railway Museum at Shildon will be presented to Durham County Council’s Cabinet on Wednesday, 13th Sep-tember.The museum, which opened in 2004, is cur-rently jointly managed by Durham County Council and The Science Museums Group (SMG).However, a review of management structures and governance processes undertaken last year recommended a number of potential changes, which would enable the museum to achieve its full future potential while also ensuring that both organi-sations continue their com-mitment to the venture.Cllr Ossie Johnson, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for tourism, culture, leisure and rural issues, said: “Not only is Locomotion of national significance as a railway museum, it also plays an important role in the local community, county and region. As such, it is a key asset within the council’s cultural portfolio and we remain committed to its long-term development.“Locomotion currently attracts around 200,000 visitors each year and over the past 13 years has exceeded all our initial ex-

pectations.“However, it is now clear that if the museum is to continue to grow and expand its audience, some changes are needed to the way in which it operates.“The new arrangements we are proposing will enable this to happen while also ensuring that we are able to continue our direct in-volvement in the strategic management and govern-ance of the museum.”At present, some museum staff are employed by the council while the rest are employed by SMG. Under the proposals being discussed next week, council employees would transfer across to SMG.The proposals would also see some changes to the museum’s manage-ment board, with an SMG trustee taking up the role of chairman and one of the board’s three council representatives becoming vice-chair.If agreed, the changes would also see the transfer of all land, buildings and structures to SMG, which would take over responsi-bility for the full mainte-nance of the site. Both organisations would continue to subsidise op-erational costs. However, the council would undertake essential safety works to the grade 1 listed coal drops – which are currently in a state of disrepair – before transfer-ring them to SMG.The authority would also enter into a 25-year funding agreement with SMG, which would be reviewed every five years.

Ellis Rowley pays his respects at the graves of the fallen at Oosterbeek War Cemetery in Holland. Twenty four cadets and staff from 2505 (Bishop Auckland) Squadron of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets returned from four days in Arnhem, Holland, on 2nd September. The expedition marked 73 years since the allied para-chute drop in World War Two as part of operation Market Garden. The cadets visited Nijmegen bridge, which was captured by US airborne troops, before moving on to Arnhem,

where they toured the local museum and took part in a 15km road march, joining groups from across Europe. The cadets laid a wreath and held a small service of remembrance at Ooster-beek War Cemetery.Flt Lt Ian Pepper RAF.VR(T) said; “It is important that we continue to remember such events and the cadets participating in the annual 15km road march is a fan-tastic way of achieving this”.

Shildon rewarded with home FA Cup tie against Altrincham

A second half Billy Greu-lich-Smith header secured Shildon’s passage to the Second Round Qualifying of the FA Cup last Saturday. The Railwaymen travelled to Scunthorpe where they took on Bottesford Town of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division. The hosts had previously played Northern League opposition eight times, in-cluding a previous encoun-ter with Shildon, and had lost each time, so the Dean Street club were unwilling to find themselves on the wrong side of that statistic. The match proved a tougher test than the visitors might have expected, with many fans considering qualifica-tion for the next round a

formality. However, the score line did flatter the hosts somewhat, who failed to create any meaningful chances throughout the game. Indeed Shildon should have put the game out of sight when late in the game Greulich-Smith set off on a mazy run from inside his own half, beating several players before squaring for Anthony Peacock to produce what will remain the miss of the season when he somehow managed to hit the post from two yards with the entire goal at his mercy. The attacking midfielder was inconsolable but could take solace that his miss did not affect the outcome of the game, despite a last ditch flurry by the home side which Shildon’s

defence managed to survive. The Railwaymen will now welcome Northern Premier League side, Altrincham FC to Dean Street on Saturday 16th September, after the Manchester-based side needed a replay to take care of Abbey Hey FC.The sides previously met at the same stage of the com-petition in 2012-13 when Altrincham were a Confer-ence North side. This weekend, Shildon are back on Northern League duty when they take on bottom club, Stockton Town, who are yet to collect any points this season.

Last Saturday Shildon AFC Over 40s suffered a home defeat at Jubilee Fields to Sedgefield FC.The 0-2 score line flattered the away team and did not justify the dominant play from the home team. An even first half ended with Sedgefield scoring from a corner that was not dealt with by watching de-fenders. Right on half time Allan Bell was taken down in the box by the Sedge-field keeper for a penalty kick which he then saved from Steven Wheldon’s

tame attempt. A dominant display in the second half went unre-warded as good possession play and constant attacks could not be converted into any goals for the home team. Late in the game Sedge-field scored a second, again from poor defending at a corner kick. Shildon’s next game, on Saturday 9th September is at Hackworth Park against Sunderland The Doxy Lad. Kick off is at the usual time of 10.30am.
