SEPT 2009 NEWSLETTER
UPCOMING “SEPT” TALKS: Due to Heritage Day falling on the last Thursday of September, our next talk will be Thursday the 1st of October at the Officers Mess of the Cape Town Highlanders Regt inside the Castle of Good Hope.
SHOW & TELL The following talk will be held on Thursday the 29th of October 2009.
CHAIRMAN: Members’ Faire: Our first members faire more than met our expectations and certainly allows us to build on it. We will plan to host them at least quarterly at this stage. More about that in our feed back further down. 2009 NAACCSA AGM: The 2009 AGM for the national body of accredited collecting bodies were held on the 5
th of
September at the Truvelo Offices in Midrand. Beyond attending to the formalities of reporting on our various activities, we also discussed the challenges that face us collectively. Cleary we are facing serious challenges yet to come on various direct and indirect aspects pertaining to our existence to ensure our continual survival on more levels than simply being administrative bodies for firearm collecting individuals. We await clarity around a more visionary leadership with a clear grasp of those challenges facing us lest we eventually stagnate and end up in the same irrelevant position that the MOTHS reached so sadly. 2009 AGM: We are just awaiting the annual financials, and then we will mail the AGM notices to be scheduled in November. This year we again vote for a new EXCO and request members to propose any nominations along with a clear CV as to their intended roles within the EXCO structure of Chairman/Secretary/Treasurer/Membership Committee Convenor. It is imperative that we secure competent people who can commit themselves to the task at hand who won’t neglect their duties simply because it is part time. We are no longer a part time fun interest group, but as result of the numerous legal requirements, we evolved into a truly professional body with far reaching challenges to promote our various interests on various levels. Clearly a daunting task if we are to grow to

further levels to become a truly dynamic organisation with a vision more than simply surviving! We certainly achieved much, but much more remains to be done if we are to survive successfully, and it cannot be done if its members is not involved! So it is clear that more is at stake than simply voting for a new EXCO for the next two years!!
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE:
FIRE RELICENCING:
A concerning number of applications to become Categorised Private Collectors pending at the end of
March, simply stagnated. Probably due to the illusion that the much vaunted SAHNCA court ruling and
subsequent court cases would simply wipe our problems away as it were mere bad dreams. Read in
context of the world wide trends in this regard, it is highly unlikely that we will achieve more than some
marginal successes albeit on vital constitutional issues with the basic FCA remaining very much in
force. One would be rather ignorant and naïve to believe anything else. Except that our collective
leadership needs to keep working towards improving our fate, those members who has not managed
to achieve the much coveted categorised private collector status, could very well find themselves at the
short end of the stick at the eleventh hour! It is our most urgent plea that those must pull the proverbial
finger and make work of their rusted research and bring it to fruitful conclusion. If in any doubt, contact
the Membership Committee Convenor Robert Nothhaft at [email protected]

CAPE SAAACA SHOOTING DISCIPLINES: While we as collectors learn a lot from historical records about our collections, shooting them teaches us what was possible and how they performed. That certainly opens new insights around our interest fields.
Our shoots increasingly are becoming popular and we hope to attract enough attention in the various categories to facilitate a competitive level as well.

2. Bolt action rifles and revolvers
3. Semi-auto assault rifles and pistols.

FUTURE SHOOTS: DATE: 3

TIME: 09H30 for 10H00.
VENUE: Range 3 (In front of Club house) at the NSADF Range at ATLANTIS off the
R307
RANGE OFFICERS: Stephan Fourie

Francois du Toit (Safety)
COSTS: R20,00
Shoots at Atlantis can unfortunately only be booked quarterly in advance and you will be
advised of the next quarter’s dates in our next newsletter and it will also be posted our web
site calendar.
Under real conditions one was under pressure to shoot as you were and normally enemy contacts happened at short distances. Out shooting details are designed to emulate that for the various firearm types, although we have the “enemy’s” (paper targets) permission to allow a somewhat more relaxed time-span to allow all the “old soldiers” to get their breath and to get our shaky watery eyes on target. So for those who believe in reincarnation for firearms, I dare you to dust off your old pieces and give them a second wind to show what they did when they were young, bold and in uniform! It also serves as an ideal opportunity to introduce a novice to collecting, possibly your own son or the neighbours’?
IT’S FUN AND IT SMELLS OF CORDITE!
If you feel that you want to shoot that nice collectors piece to get the cobwebs out of it,
please feel free to contact us through our web-site www.capesaaaca.co.za or just pop in at
Range 3, in front of the club-house, in Atlantis every 1st Saturday of every month
Notes on the Castle Members Faire held on the 27th of August 2009 in the Secunda Room inside the Cape Castle:
Thursday 27-08-2009 was a first and an evening with a difference when more than 40
members and guests attended an interesting exhibition evening of members and dealers as
part of the Chairman’s attempt to promote interest and networking among members.
There were 13 tables on exhibition ranging from Wild West action shooting to BB Replica
guns and even 17 th century cannon!
Table no 1 was ROBERT NOTHAFT’s collection of mainly Winchester and Colt firearms
of the Old West – concisting of some Civil War models as well.
![Page 5: of October at the Officers Mess of the Cape Town ... 2009.pdf · Probably due to the illusion that the much vaunted SAHNCA court ruling and subsequent court cases would simply wipe](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042103/5e80b87da297cd7cd3039616/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
5
Table no 2 was GRAEME SMITH’s
and Tonto Willie Myburg’s Cowboy
Action Shooting gear. Together these
2 Wild West exhibitions drew a lot of
attention and discussion among
attendees.
Table no 3 was MIKE
MADLANER’S MK 1 Lee Metford
(1891 Model) and Steyr Geddies rifle
among other things which recindled
interest in the Boer War period
Table no 4 was CHARLES
MONTGOMERY of SUBURBAN
GUNS which hailed a Saiga 7.62 x
39mm (the modern Russian AK)
and an interesting hand gun
collection among other things.
![Page 6: of October at the Officers Mess of the Cape Town ... 2009.pdf · Probably due to the illusion that the much vaunted SAHNCA court ruling and subsequent court cases would simply wipe](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042103/5e80b87da297cd7cd3039616/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
6
Table no 5 consisted of ARNOLD
BENEKE’S Ruger and Colt hangun
collection as well as JACK
WHITHAM’S homemade RPSC
holsters and other leatherworks of
excellent quality.
Table no 6 was BRUCE CAIRNS theme of
“Action types of self loading pistols as
implemented by different manufacturers in
different calibres.”
Table no 7 was the Chairman’s
exhibition of muzzle loaders –
ranging from an 16th Century Arab
Jeziul, the various local
“Bobbbejaan Boud” muzzle loaders
to the British muskets. Overall a compact collection refelcting the development of firearms
over 350 years.
Table no 8 concisted of BRIAN
COODE’S Standard C 96 Mauser and P-
08 Luger model pistols.
![Page 7: of October at the Officers Mess of the Cape Town ... 2009.pdf · Probably due to the illusion that the much vaunted SAHNCA court ruling and subsequent court cases would simply wipe](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042103/5e80b87da297cd7cd3039616/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
7
Table no 9 was PAUL BROWNE’S
Ammo – among them AT Rifle ammo –
and Bayonet collection.
Table no 10 was hosted by co-owner
Henk Mulder of ELCAPRISO
ARMS & AMMUNITION who put
on a display of a BB Replica
collection – difficult to tell from the
real thing and certainly not looking
out of place among the rest of the
authentic collections – apart from the
price tags – that is!
Table no 11 was JOHN
LAMONT’S Wire cutter
exhibition with a mainly WW1
theme – which drew a lot of
attention as well.
Table no 12 was MIKE DI BONA’S
19 Century’s sporting Muzzle loaders
and FRANCOIS DU TOIT’S
“Umkamaas circa 1992 “Zipgun
Special” – all Township handmades –
which certainly raised an eyebrow or
two amonst the attendees!
![Page 8: of October at the Officers Mess of the Cape Town ... 2009.pdf · Probably due to the illusion that the much vaunted SAHNCA court ruling and subsequent court cases would simply wipe](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042103/5e80b87da297cd7cd3039616/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
8
Last but not least was IAN
VAN OORDT at table no 13
who carted a geniune full size
cannon up the 2 flights of
stairs! A fine piece of 17th
Century 36mm Bronze
Indonesian Lantaka
ceremonial cannon with a
few cannonballs of different
calibres.
There was certainly no lack of diversity omong the exhibitions and discussions and
networking continued untill fairly late in the evening. Prizes were awarded and first prize
went to the Cowboy displays hosted by GRAEME SMITH and ROBERT NOTHHAFT
which drew the most attention. MIKE DI BONA and FRACOIS DU TOIT drew 2nd prize at
table no 12.
The Chairman expressed his satisfaction with the quality of and interest in the exhibition
which was declared a huge success – and a quarterly exhibition of this kind can now certainly
be considered in the future.
