What do you like best about the neighborhood you live in? We love that we feel like we live away from it all, yet still live close to everything. We have wonderful neighbors. And it’s also very neat to admire all the beautiful horses when we go get the mail. It’s a 100% change from how we were used to living in the Illinois suburbs a year ago.

What do you like to do for fun? Hiking, camping, boating at the lake, and playing HORSE in the pool.

Something unique about you that not very many other people can claim: Tom and I grew up in the same neighborhood along with all eight of my mother’s brothers and sisters—and we all went to the same grammar school.

What high school, college/university did you attend? Tom and I both went to all Catholic schools through high school. I graduated from Illinois State University and Tom from Northern Illinois University.

Something you can’t live without? Popcorn. Popcorn is made in our house at least six nights a week. Sometimes bagged, some-times kernels. We had a full-standing popcorn machine in our old kitchen. We are looking to get another.

By Lynn Prehm, Cave Creek Resident

Prehm Family

What do you like best about your home? Our backyard is like our own private resort and really why we bought the house. Plus, having a separate casita for guests to stay in is awesome!

What do you like best about living in Cave Creek? It is just about the most interesting town I have ever been to. People are so nice. And there is always something to do.

What’s your most memorable Cave Creek experi-ence? Thanksgiving week at the Buffalo Chip when my little brother and his family from Illinois visited. We watched bull riding and then hung out in the hot tub for Thanksgiving! My brother said, “I really wanted to hate your house so I could con-vince you to move back to Illinois, but I can’t do that; this is really awesome.”

Family member professions: Lynn owns a software company called Trace-It Systems that focuses on data collection for food traceability and labeling. Tom is a manufacturing engineer with more than 20 years of industry experience and is still in search of a job here. This has been the hardest part of our move to Arizona. We never dreamed it would be difficult to find a manufacturing job here. (We would appreciate any leads!)

Favorite holiday tradition: Tom and Kelsey have been making homemade pizza for Christmas every year since she was about three.

A life hack you’d like to share with your neigh-bors: 1) Wash just a load of towels on HOT with baking soda (de-tergent) and vinegar (softener) with no dryer sheet when drying. This process cleans the washing machine, and the towels come out extra fluffy. 2) Eating whole mint leaves is the absolute best treatment for constipation. 3) Boiling vinegar is the best stain remover for carpet.

Favorite vacation destination outside of AZ: ThailandFavorite way to relax: Sitting outside by the campfire with good friends and a cold beer.Favorite sports teams: Chicago BearsA favorite movie we could never get tired of watch-ing: The SandlotFavorite music: Lynn – ‘80s all the way, Tom – alternative, Kevin  – classic rock, Kelsey – popFavorite quote: You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge.

Meet 12-Year-Old

Brothers & sisters: Brothers Jeremiah 15 and Blake 5, and sister Laney 3.

Pets: My cow Calley and my chickens.

School you attend: Connections Academy homeschool.

What do you like best about Cave Creek? I love the country feeling and the love and support from community.

How are you involved in the Cave Creek community. I love to serve at Carefree Christian Church and help with children’s ministry. I do home baking and sell them to family and friends/neighbors. With the money I earn from that I buy yarn so I can crochet hats for children of all ages. I donate the hats to hospitals all over the U.S. I also love visiting senior homes. Overall I love to see people smile and be happy when I try to be a blessing to them.

What’s your most memorable Cave Creek experience? This year for Thanksgiving my mom and I decided to make a homemade organic pump-kin roll as a giveaway for the Cave Creek communi-ty. In our giveaway post [on social media] we asked

people to comment on what they are most thankful for.  Many people entered comments for the giveaway so my mom and I decided to give away three pump-kin rolls instead of one.

What do you like to do for fun? I love spending time with my family and going out to the movies.

Talents/hobbies: I love to crochet, cook, bake, garden, and read nutritional & natural cure books. I want to help find the cure for cancer. I also love to sing and play the piano.

What’s unique about you that not very many other people can claim: 1) I was nominated Future President of the United States. 2) I learned how to crochet at five years old. 3) I can operate a combine. 4) I can milk a cow. 5) I don’t have a cell phone. Most people my age have one.

Favorite color: Lavender purple and sun-flower yellowFavorite ice cream flavor: Butter pecanFavorite movie: “Patch Adams”, “Miracles from Heaven” and “Love Kennedy”Favorite TV show: “Kids Baking Champi-onship” and “Chopped Junior”Favorite subject in school: Language arts and science

pets of the month

An Update on Some of Our FAVORITE PETS

Hudson the Miracle Dog Part II

Last year, Cave Creek Living’s March Pet of the Month was Hudson, Chad Hunter’s French Bulldog. The article celebrated Hudson’s miraculous recovery from a terrible accident that left him paralyzed after falling off a bed. But after emergency surgery and countless hours of rehab, Hudson began to walk again! A year later, Hudson was running with his buddies every day and playing ball.

Hudson was a miracle dog then. And he’s earned the title once again.

This past summer at a get-together, Chad’s friend noticed Hudson at the bottom of the pool! Chad frantically ran and jumped into the pool to try and save him, realizing it might be hopeless because no one was sure how long Hudson was down there. He did CPR on Hudson. And… within minutes, Hudson was back! Chad said he was still worried that Hudson would at least have some brain damage considering how long he was deprived of oxygen. But Hudson was just fine–as if nothing had happened.

Molly Cheats Death Once Again

Becky & Brad Bearnson’s Shih-Tzu Molly was Cave Creek Living’s Pet of the Month last August for narrowly escaping a coyote attack. A coyote had her in its mouth ready to take off when Brad quick-ly charged the coyote, startling it enough to jolt Molly out of its mouth. She needed a few stitches but was soon back to normal.

Molly made headlines again when she went missing in December. A neighbor was kind enough to post an alert on the Cave Creek Infamous Bulletin Board (CCIBB) Facebook page, along with the picture of Molly from the Cave Creek Living article to help identify her. Neighbors from the CCIBB group often quickly band together to find missing pets. With Molly being so small—and so desirable to desert animal dwellers—there was no time to waste locating her. Thankfully, within a few hours, Molly had been found by neighbors unharmed and was reunited with her family. CCIBB and all the neighbors were quickly thanked for their help. “I think Molly has a death wish,” said Brad.

One day when Andrea Korff—a nurse and local area resident—was on her way to work, she witnessed a horrible multi-car accident on the 101 freeway. She was the first on the scene to stop and tend to the needs of the injured. Shortly after, a police K9 unit showed up to help triage and comfort the injured.

Since that day, Andrea’s charity passion has been the police K9 unit. In particular, she helps raise money for the Kevlar bullet/stab-proof vests that the dogs must wear. Each vest costs between $1,500 and

$1,900—an amount not allocated in the police de-partment’s budget. Private donations support this need. And all the money Andrea raises goes directly to this cause. Last year she raised $5,000.

“It is quite special to surprise our officers with our donation amount; they show you they are real people and are very grateful,” said Andrea.

For more information, please feel free to contact Andrea at [email protected].

Do you volunteer? We love sharing the good deeds of the neighborhood! Please email [email protected] to learn how you could be featured in the next “Making a Difference” feature.

In December, Andrea hosted an exhibition and fundraiser at the Holland Center to educate the public about the K9 unit and what she does to help.

Superior Sun

SolutionsSuperior Sun Solutions installs premium sunscreens, retractable awnings, and rolling security shutters.

Of the many things that make Superior Sun Solu-tions a business you can trust, the one that stands out is that they have experienced installers, all of who work directly for the company. Every installer is an employee, not a sub-contractor, so they uphold the same strong work ethic and values as the compa-ny. All installers are clean-cut, arrive in uniform, and conduct themselves in a professional manner.

Even though they’ve been around for 25 years, Su-perior Sun Solutions is a small company and they intentionally stay small. Owner Phillip Wedel is committed to his customers and doing things right. “The bigger a company gets, the more they lose control of quality,” said Phillip.

Phillip is a long-time business owner and has been married for 14 years. He is the proud father of four kids ages 1, 4, 10 and 12. Anyone who meets Phillip immediately notices that he exudes integrity, work ethic, and a strong moral foundation.

Some benefits of sun shades include:• An encompassed patio that creates an Arizona

Truly Makinga Difference

The Mission of the Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center is to provide food, referral information and financial assistance to individuals and families in the foothills area that are in a crisis situation.

These are the words of a family in need who received assistance from Foothills Food Bank.

"When I showed up at the Foothills Food Bank, I was near tears, bordering on panic. You were our last hope before having our electricity shut off. Walking out later, APS check and food in hand, I felt like skipping. A boulder rolled off my shoulders, thanks to you. On the drive home I kept saying, "Thank you Lord for these people who are your hands and your heart."

As someone once said, "God did not add another day to your life because you needed it, He added it because someone out there needed you."

Our community needs each of you! Those who walk into your door often are broken, discouraged and despondent. They leave with food, which is a huge blessing, most certainly, but I think even more importantly, they walk away with hope restored, encouraged that help is available because of what you do and how deeply you care.

You, on a daily basis, make a difference in the lives of so many. Our community is better and brighter because of your service and caring hearts. I know first hand. We can't thank you enough. You changed our lives.

God bless each and every one of you!
