Lenten Worship:
The Long and Winding Road…
Ash Wednesday 2020 is not until February 26 which means Easter comes rather late this year! By observing the forty days of Lent, each individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days before beginning his official ministry. Some faithful observe fasting and/or some sort of self-denial during Lent, but however one chooses to keep this season, the purpose is to set aside time for prayer and reflection on Jesus Christ - his suffering and sacrifice, life, death, burial and resurrection.
The journey through Lent leads us to Palm
Sunday (April 5) and the triumphal entry
into Jerusalem where later in the week Jesus
will celebrate the Passover with his Disciples.
Our young people at Central will lead us into
the Palm Sunday service waving the traditional
palms. The service will also prepare us for the
betrayal, arrest, torture and trial of Jesus
during Holy Week. Maundy Thursday
celebrates the Passover (this year at our sister
church, St. Mark UCC, on Fruitridge Ave). On
Good Friday we will commemorate the
Crucifixion of Jesus with our friends from St
Mark UCC at our own Central Christian
Church. Both services start at 7 p.m.
Maundy Thursday service at St. Mark UCC
at 7:00 on April 9
Good Friday service at Central Christian at
7:00 on April 10
Easter Sunday on April 12 will start with a
sunrise service in CCC’s memorial garden
beginning at 7:00AM, with breakfast to follow.
The journey will culminate with Easter Sunday
service at 9:30AM when we unpack the Alleluia
banner and celebrate the Resurrection of our
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Long and
Winding Road will be long, but we will have
been nourished by the bread of meditation,
prayer, song and the spoken word each
Sunday.
Easter Flowers: Deadline will be March 23 for orders. Please see order form on page13.
Hello. I am Kathy Ocampo and I have had the pleasure of serving as an Elder at
Central for several years. One thing I love about Central is the support available
from members when we try something new that brings us closer to God. I
remember when I was first asked to be an Elder years ago, and thinking that I
did not have enough knowledge/experience/wisdom/etc. to be an ELDER.
However, with the support and encouragement of Rev. Rebecca and others I took
a leap of faith and tried it—and being an Elder has been one of the most
rewarding experiences of my life. Being an Elder includes sharing the Lord’s
Supper on Sundays, but it is so much more.
Elders serve as the spiritual leaders of the church. For me, being an Elder has
included helping others recognize their spiritual gifts and find the courage to use
them with others. Through the “Talk to an Elder” initiative I have had the
pleasure to sit with those who needed someone to be present, listen, and hopefully
help them feel heard.
Being an Elder has led me to try new things and get out of my comfort zone—
because I can’t ask others to do something that I am unwilling to try myself. For
example, last week I served as Door Monitor for the first time and was blessed
with a completely different perspective of the service—and it was amazing.
Being an Elder has meant supporting Central as we step out in faith to follow
where God is leading us as a congregation. We don’t have a clear roadmap for
where that is, but we can use our individual and collective intuition to do the best
we can, and try to recognize when we seem to be drifting away (or staying
stagnant).
For me, being an Elder is knowing that I am never going to be perfect, but
believing I am truly loved by our God—and sharing that message with others.
Valentine craft make & take
We are wrapping up our collection of small LEGO sets for Aaron's LEGOcy. It is exciting to see the sets as they have appeared week after week and the children in the Heart Center at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis will be blessed by your generous offerings. Thank you for all who purchased and donated LEGO. If you intended to donate LEGO to the project but were not yet able to participate, there is still time. Although the LEGO collection time has ended, the sets have not yet been delivered. Additionally, Randy and Andrea are happy to collect LEGO year round and will be sure that all donations will be placed in the hands of a child who needs it. Thank you again for your help and support.
The social work office at Brownstone Manor offers a small food pantry for residents in need. Some residents have been recently homeless and/or are still waiting for benefits. All residents are low income and some are struggling with nutrition issues. Items that could be helpful include, but are not limited to: canned meats (i.e. tuna, vienna sausages, canned beef or ham or chicken, etc), toilet paper, paper towels, peanut butter, crackers, dish soap, laundry soap, bar soaps or shower gels, non-perishable food items. All items are kept by the community social worker and distributed to residents on a need basis. We hope to collect items throughout the month of March to be a blessing at Brownstone.
Finally, the church office could use food and/or gas cards to keep for those who come in and are in need. Thank you for all your help.
- Andrea Todd
Perhaps you have noticed the various jars on the table at the back of the sanctuary that say "Love Wash" on them and wondered what Love Wash is? The Love Wash is a ministry introduced by St. Mark United Church of Christ. It
is intended for anyone who could use a bit of love through help with washing their clothes or bedding. On the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., representatives of St. Mark provides quarters to wash and dry the loads and dryer sheets, if needed.
As you may imagine, this ministry can be expensive, so we would like to partner with them by assisting with some funding. By donating quarters (or other denominations) in the jars, we can help St. Mark with this ministry that helps various people and families in need. If you would like to donate dryer sheets it would be a welcome help as well. This is an instance where it can honestly be said that EVERY QUARTER COUNTS! Let's help St. Mark in this worthwhile ministry!
Rebecca’s Revelation
“The long and winding road, that leads to your door…”
John Lennon & Paul McCartney
Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ! The season of Lent is upon us! This
forty-day season begins on Ash Wednesday, (February 26, 2020) and lasts until sunrise
on Easter Sunday. Mirroring Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness before starting his
ministry, Lent is a time for increased attention to spiritual practices and to meditate on
the meaning of the cross in our Christian faith and life. Many Christians do not like this
season, but I love it. (Perhaps others are not doing it right?)
Our worship series at Central Christian for Lent 2020 is The Long and Winding Road.
“Journey” or “Walking” themes are common and appropriate for this season as through
worship we travel with Jesus to Jerusalem and all that awaits him there. As part of Lent
this year, we will be hearing from the voices of those whose paths crossed Jesus,
especially the last hours of his earthly life.
Another “long and winding road” we in the United States are traveling in 2020 is the one
that will lead to the Presidential election in November. Although we have a long way to go
at this point, I want to share my thoughts on how I am approaching the campaigns from
a faith perspective.
I deeply appreciate the separation of church and state we have in our country. I also
deeply value the religious freedoms included in the First Amendment of our Constitution.
I would never want someone to dictate to me how I can or cannot live my faith and
relationship with God, and I feel strongly that others should also have this right.
Personally, I know God best in the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ;
however, God can be known in many ways and traditions – that is up to God, not me.
As far as I am concerned, candidates can be of any religion or no religion. Whether an
individual is a Christian or not is not the priority for me; it’s the values they uphold and
practice. Someone does not need to follow Jesus in order to live the Golden Rule.
Someone does not need to follow Jesus to have concern for the most vulnerable in our
midst: children, single mothers or fathers, the sick, veterans, refugees/immigrants, the
poor. Someone does not need to follow Jesus in order for me to vote for them as long as
their values match what I believe is best for the common good.
Just some food for thought…and try to remember that if someone gets ugly with you
when talking about politics, does not mean you should do the same.
Peace and many blessings to you,
Rev. Rebecca Zelensky
Crocheters Needed!
We have been asked to supply 10 sleeping mats to a homeless shelter in Bedford, Indiana, by the end of March when the shelter closes for the season. This is more than our small group of crocheters can accomplish! If you crochet, please consider making one or more mats so we are able to fulfill this request. We have plenty of plarn and size Q crochet hooks, so all you have to do is start crocheting!
Please see Andrea Todd, Mary Jo Brown, or Karen Sagraves to get started!
Each month members of The InterFaith Council visit a participating congregation for worship. On March 22, several members of the InterFaith Council of the Wabash Valley will be worshipping with us here at Central. The InterFaith Council of the Wabash Valley exists to support faith, spirituality, and life-affirming humanitarian beliefs, practices and actions of Wabash Valley individuals, institutions, and groups through education, dialogue, and advocacy; foster interfaith respect and cooperation; and oppose intolerance, prejudice, intimidation, bullying and hate incidents and crimes. We look forward to welcoming the attending members on March 22.
