THE PERSONAL PRAYER OF THE

CHRISTIAN: The Need for Prayer

“The mature prayer of the Christian has

two dimensions: liturgical and personal.

This prayer is called to fulfil the task of

unceasing worship. Jesus Christ teaches

us “to pray always and not lose heart: (Lk

18:1; see Lk 11:5-8). The apostle Paul in

turn calls us to “pray without ceasing” (1

Thes 5:17). The life of the Christian –

beginning from the Holy Mystery of

Baptism, when the person is immersed

(the literal meaning of the word baptism)

in the life of the Most Holy Trinity,

chrismated by the Holy Spirit and joined

to Christ in Holy Communion – this life

becomes a time of prayer, filled with

praise, thanksgiving, and glorification of

the Creator. Our life is then transformed

into a prayerful state, or stance, a

constant readiness of the heart.

Christians should ceaselessly cultivate

this state: “They ‘pray without ceasing’

who join prayer to works that are of

obligation, and good works to their

prayer…It is only in this way that we can

understand the injunction ‘pray without

ceasing’ as something that we can carry

out.” Saint Basil the Great in his Rules

prayer in the course of the day, in order

thus to consecrate the entire day to the

Lord.”

Потреба молитви

“ Зріла молитва християнина має два

виміри: літургійний і особистий. Ця

молитва покликана звершувати

невпинне богопочитання. Ісус Христос

навчає «молитись завжди й не

падати духом» (Лк. 18, 1; пор. 11, 5-8), а

святий апостол Павло закликає

безнастанно молитися (пор. 1 Сол. 5,

17). Життя християнина, починаючи

від святого таїнства Хрещення, коли

людина «занурена» (дослівне значення

слова «хрещення») в життя

Пресвятої Тройці, миропомазана

Святим Духом і з’єднана з Христом у

святому Причасті, стає часом

молитви хвали, благодарення і

прослави Творця, перетворюється у

молитовний стан, тобто постійну

готовність серця. Цей стан людина

має плекати безнастанно: «Невпинно

молиться той, хто поєднує молитву з

працею і навпаки. Тільки так можемо

сповнити заповідь щодо невпинної

молитви». Святий Василій Великий у

своїх правилах поєднав працю з

семиразовою літургійною молитвою,

щоб таким чином уся доба була

посвячена Господеві. ”

PREPARING AT HOME TO RETURN

TO CHURCH FOR PUBLIC WORSHIP

As we are limited to a maximum capacity of

30%, in order to attend Sunday Divine

Liturgy, you will have to sign-up or pre-

register. As physical distancing MUST be

maintained in the Church between

members of different households or social

circles, the number of faithful we can

accommodate may be lower than the 30%

capacity. Pre-registration for next Sunday

can be found at the following link:

ENTERING CHURCH FOR WORSHIP

Please arrive early for Church as you will be

screened before entering. Please fill out the

following form (one per household):

While a reservation is not required for daily

or festal services, this form MUST be filled

out and submitted for EVERY Liturgical

Service you participate in.

Once you have been screened, you may

place Sunday Envelopes and Building Fund

donations in the first basket, candle

offerings in the second basket, sanitize your

hands, and take candles to light. You will be

directed to your pew, which may not be your

preferred pew, and you must remain there

for the duration of the Divine Liturgy.

The Divine Liturgy will proceed as usual.

Singing will be led by a single cantor; we

invite you to sing in your heart and mind.

While masks are strongly recommended for

anyone over the age of 8, you MUST wear a

mask to sing the responses of the Liturgy.

Transborder workers must wear a mask for

the entire Divine Liturgy.

No kissing of icons or liturgical objects.

Icons may be venerated with the sign of the

cross and a bow.

No prayerbooks or bulletins available.

Holy Eucharist will be distributed at the end

of the Divine Liturgy in order to facilitate a

spaced and orderly exit from the Church.

Holy Eucharist will be distributed using a

sanitized spoon for every communicant.

JULY 11 – BLESSED OLGA (OLHA),

PRINCESS OF RUS’, IN BAPTISM, HELEN (oca.org)

Saint Olga, Equal of the Apostles, was the

wife of the Kyivan Great Prince Igor. The

struggle of Christianity with paganism

under Igor and Olga, who reigned after Oleg

(+ 912), entered into a new phase. The

Church of Christ in the years following the

reign of Igor (+ 945) became a remarkable

spiritual and political force in the realm of

Kyivan-Rus’. The preserved text of a treaty

of Igor with the Greeks in the year 944 gives

indication of this: it was included by the

chronicler in the “Tale of Bygone Years,”

under the entry recording the events of the

year 6453 (945).

The God-wise Olga entered into history as a

great builder of the civil life and culture of

Kyivan-Rus’. The chronicles are filled with

accounts of her incessant “goings”

throughout Kyivan-Rus’ with the aim of the

well-being and improvement of the civil and

domestic manner of life of her subjects. In

the year 946 she went with her son and

retinue through the Drevlyani land,

“imposing tribute and taxes”, noting the

villages, inns and hunting places, liable for

inclusion in the Kyiv great-princely

holdings.

In her heart the wise Olga made the decision

to become a Christian. The sacrament of

Baptism was made over her by the

Constantinople Patriarch Theophylactus

(933-956), and her godfather was the

emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitos

(912-959). At Baptism she was given the

name Helen in honor of the holy Equal of the

Apostles Helen (May 21), the mother of

Saint Constantine, and she also had been the

discoverer of the Venerable Wood of the

Cross of the Lord. In an edifying word

spoken at the conclusion of the rite, the

Patriarch said: “Blessed are you among the

women of Rus’, for you have forsaken the

darkness and have loved the Light. The

people of Rus’ shall bless you in all the

future generations, from your grandson and

great-grandson to your furthermost

descendants.” He instructed her in the

truths of the Faith, the churchly rules and

the rule of prayer, he explained the

commands about fasting, chastity and

charity. “She, however,” says the Monk

Nestor, “bowed her head and stood, literally

like a sponge absorbing water, listening to

the teaching, and bowing down to the

Patriarch, she said, “By your prayers, O

Master, let me be preserved from the wiles

of enemies”. It is in precisely this way, with

a slightly bowed head, that Saint Olga is

depicted on one of the frescoes of the Kyiv

Sophia Cathedral.

Saint Olga, after becoming a Christian,

zealously devoted herself to efforts of

Christian evangelization among the pagans,

and also church construction: “demanding

the distressing of demons and the beginning

of life for Christ Jesus”. She built churches: of

Saint Nicholas and the church of the Holy

Wisdom at Kyiv, of the Annunciation of the

Most Holy Theotokos at Vitebsk, and of the

Holy Life-Creating Trinity at Pskov. Pskov

from that period has been called in the

chronicles the Domicile of the Holy Trinity.

Her days were numbered, and her burdens

and sorrows sapped her strength. On July

11, 969 Saint Olga died: “and with great

lament they mourned her, her son and

grandsons and all the people.” Saint Olga

lived, died, and was buried as a Christian.

“And thus having lived and well having

glorified God in Trinity, Father and Son and

Holy Spirit, having worshipped in the

blessed faith, she ended her life in the peace

of Christ Jesus, our Lord.” Saint Olga

glorified God with good deeds in all things,

and God glorified her. Under holy Prince

Vladimir, ascribed by some as occurring in

the year 1007, the relics of Saint Olga were

transferred into the Church of the Tithes of

the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos

and placed within a special sarcophagus.

“Як денниця перед сонцем, як зоря перед

світом”, так серед глибокої поганської

тьми, що огортала Русь, засяяла свята

Ольга, велика душею і премудра умом

жінка князя Ігоря, мати князя

Святослава, бабуся святого Володимира.

На руському престолі, яким після смерти

свого мужа правила іменем

неповнолітнього сина Святослава, вона

виявилася такою мудрою

управителькою свого народу, що дала

початок найвидатнішим поступам у

розвитку Руської держави. А з хвилі, коли

Ольга прийняла християнство,

пробудилася і душа народу; вона вказала

стежинку до нового життя, до якого мав

привести її внук Володимир. Свята Ольга

була предтечею великої доби, саме тому

ми її величаємо як велику і мудру. А

перед престолом Всевишнього вона

свята, бо святим було після хрещення її

життя і вгодні Богу діла її, за які Христова

Церква вінчала її вінцем святости, а

вдячні покоління почитають пам’ять

благовірної і праведної.

Як свідчить передання, одного разу

Ольга вибралася на купіль на Дніпро. І

ось поблизу берега вона почула

прекрасний спів, тихий, що розриває

душу. Спів линув з маленької хатини,

звідти також поширювався запах кадила.

Зацікавлена, Ольга увійшла досередини і

побачила престол, біля якого

сивоголовий, з лицем, зораним

зморшками, старець, священик, разом з

громадкою вірних християн молився

Богу. Саме він порадив княгині податися

до Царгорода, де вона пізнає святу віру.

Прекрасне передання, лиш не відомо

наскільки воно правдиве. Ольга не

потребувала аж такого роз’яснення, вона

дуже добре знала, що в Руській державі є

багато людей “грецької віри”, як тоді на

Русі називали християн. До того вже

Аскольд і Дир були християнами, вже

святі Кирило і Методій довершили

переклад на слов’янську мову святих

книг, у Києві вже була церковця святого

пророка Іллі. Чоловік Ольги Ігор мав у

своєму війську багато християн, не

бракувало їх і серед достойників, бо вже

у 945 р., укладаючи договір з греками,

частина русинів присягала на

поганських богах, а частина на хресті і

Євангелії.

Та прийшов час, коли Ольга вирішила

прийняти хрещення, яке, згідно з

тодішнім звичаєм, зазвичай відкладали

на схилок літ. Вона поїхала до Царгорода.

Оповідь про те, що Ольга тоді була такою

красунею, що сам імператор захотів

одружитися з нею, для нас дуже

приваблива, але, на жаль, неправдива.

Ользі тоді виповнилося щонайменше

шістдесят п’ять літ. Хрещення вона

прийняла 957 р. Її хресним батьком був

імператор Костянтин VII Багрянородний

(912-959), а хрестив Ольгу-Олену

патріярх Полієвкт. Ім’я Олена свята

Ольга прийняла на честь

рівноапостольної Олени, матері святого

Костянтина Великого.

А літописець Нестор пише так: “Ольга,

просвічена хрещенням, раділа душею і

тілом. Патріярх сказав їй:

«Благословенна ти між жінками

руськими, що полюбила ти світ і

відкинула морок; і благословити тебе

будуть сини Руси до останнього роду»”.

Слова ці сповнилися і сповнюватимуться

в прийдешніх віках. Патріярх подарував

Ользі хрест, на якому були написані такі

слова: “Обновися, Руська земле, в Бозі

через святе хрещення, яке прийняла

блаженна Ольга”. Хрест той в часи князя

Ярослава, сина Володимира Великого,

стояв на престолі, збудованої ним

величної церкви святої Софії; згодом, у

замішаннях і пожежах Києва, пропав.

Повернувшись на Русь, Ольга провадила

правдиво християнське життя. Вона

побудувала в Києві церкви святого

Миколая і святої Софії, а також возвела

церковцю у своєму рідному селі Либуті,

поблизу Пскова, над рікою Великою. За її

прикладом в Києві багато навернулися.

Померла свята Ольга 11 липня 969 р.

Перед смертю попросила Святослава,

щоб після похорону не було тризни, а

також, щоб не насипали в її пам’ять

кургану, бо це був поганський звичай.

Похоронили її грецькі священики, ті, що

віддавна були на Русі, і ті, що приїхали

разом з Ольгою з Царгорода після її

хрещення. Вже невдовзі після її смерти,

за правління Володимира Великого,

Ольгу стали почитати як святу. Монах

Яків писав, що “тіло святої Ольги

спочиває в домовині, немов уві сні,

стільки літ нетлінне, і внук її Володимир

поставив її кам’яний гріб у Десятинній

церкві за митрополита Леонтія”.

Літописець Нестор закінчує свою повість

про святу Ольгу такими словами:“Вона

провістила християнство в нашій землі,

як денниця сонце, як зоря перед раннім

світлом, як місяць уночі, так світила вона

серед невірних людей. Вона перша з Руси

увійшла в небесне царство. Її величають

сини Руси як начальницю. Вона і після

смерти молить Бога за Русь. Усі її

славлять, бачачи її в тілі возлежащу

багато літ”.

++++++++++++++++++++++++ JULY 15 – HOLY GRAND PRINCE &

EQUAL-TO-THE-APOSTLES VLADIMIR

(VOLODYMYR), IN BAPTISM, BASIL (oca.org and Prologue from Ochrid)

Few names in the annals

of history can compare in

significance with the

name of Saint Vladimir,

the Baptizer of Rus’, who

stands at the beginning of

the spiritual destiny of

the Ukrainian Church and

the people of Rus’.

Vladimir was the

grandson of Saint Olga,

and he was the son of

Svyatoslav (+ 972). In his

first years as prince, we

see Vladimir as a fierce

pagan. He headed a

campaign, in which the whole of pagan Rus’

is sympathetic to him, against Yaropolk the

Christian, or in any case, according to the

chronicles, “having given great freedom to

the Christians”, on July 11, 978 he entered

into Kiev, having become the “sole ruler” of

the Kiev realm, “having subdued the

surrounding lands, some by peaceful means,

and the unsubmissive ones by the sword.”

Though Vladimir indulged himself in a wild,

sensuous life, he “shepherded his land with

truth, valor and reason,” as a good and

diligent master; of necessity he extended

and defended its boundaries by force of

arms, and in returning from military

campaigns, he made for his companions and

for all Kyiv liberal and merry feasts.

But the Lord prepared him for another task.

Where sin increases, there, in the words of

the Apostle, grace abounds (Rom. 5: 20).

“And upon him came

visitation of the Most

High, and the All-Merciful

eye of the Good God

gazed upon him, and

shone forth the thought

in his heart, of

understanding the vanity

of idolous delusion, and

of appealing to the One

God, Creator of all things

both visible and

invisible.”

Learning that other faiths

existed, he carefully

began to inquire as to

which of them was the best. For this reason,

he sent emissaries to Constantinople. When

the emissaries returned, they informed the

prince that they attended a service in the

Hagia Sophia and that they were "outside

themselves, not knowing whether they were

on earth or in heaven." This inspired

Vladimir to be baptized and to baptize his

people.

It is difficult to overestimate the deep

spiritual transformation of the people

effected by the prayers of Saint Vladimir, in

every aspect of its life and world-view. In the

pure Kyivan waters, as in a “bath of

regeneration,” there was realized a

sacramental transfiguration of the spiritual

element of the people of Rus’, the spiritual

birth of the nation, called by God to

unforeseen deeds of Christian service to

mankind.

Everywhere throughout Holy Rus’, from the

ancient cities to the far outposts, Saint

Vladimir gave orders to destroy the pagan

sanctuaries, to flog the idols, and in their

place to clear land in the hilly woods for

churches, in which altars would be

consecrated for the Bloodless Sacrifice.

Churches of God grew up along the face of

the earth, at high elevated places, and at the

bends of the rivers, along the ancient trail

“from the Variangians to the Greeks”

figuratively as road signs and lamps of

national holiness.

From the early centuries of Christianity, it

was the custom to raise up churches upon

the ruins of pagan sanctuaries or upon the

blood of the holy martyrs. Following this

practice, Saint Vladimir built the church of

Saint Basil the Great upon a hill, where a

sanctuary of Perun had been located, and he

built the stone church of the Dormition of

the Most Holy Theotokos (Church of the

Tithes) on the place of the martyrdom of the

holy Varangian Martyrs (July 12). On this

same day of May 11, the church of Sophia,

the Wisdom of God was consecrated at Kyiv

(in the year 960 under Saint Olga). Saint

Vladimir, having had the cathedral church

consecrated to the Most Holy Theotokos,

followed the example of Saint Constantine in

dedicating Kyiv to the Queen of Heaven.

Then a tithe or tenth was bestown on the

Church; and since this church had become

the center of the Rus’ collection of churchly

tithes, they called it the Tithe church. The

most ancient text of the grant, or church rule

by holy Prince Vladimir spoke thus: “For I do

bestow on this church of the Holy Mother of

God a tenth of all my principality, and also

throughout all the lands of Kyivan-Rus’ from

all the princely jurisdiction a tithe of

squirrel-pelts, and from the merchant, a

tithe of the week, and from households each

year, a tenth of every herd and every

livelihood, to the wondrous Mother of God

and the wondrous Savior.” The chronicle has

preserved a prayer of Saint Vladimir, with

which he turned to the Almighty at the

consecration of the Dormition Tithe church:

“O Lord God, look down from Heaven and

behold, and visit Your vineyard, which Your

right hand has planted. And make this new

people, whom You have converted in heart

and mind to know You, the True God. And

look down upon this Your church, which

Your unworthy servant has built in the

name of the Mother Who gave birth to Thee,

the Ever-Virgin Theotokos. And whoever

prays in this church, let his prayer be heard,

through the prayers of the All-Pure Mother

of God.”

In the year 1007 Saint Vladimir transferred

the relics of Saint Olga to the Tithe church.

Four years later, in 1011, his spouse and

companion in many of his undertakings, the

Blessed Empress Anna, was also buried

there. The Baptizer of Rus’ fell grievously ill

and surrendered his soul to the Lord in the

village of Spas-Berestov on July 15, 1015. He

had ruled the realm of Rus’ for thirty-seven

years (978-1015), twenty-eight of these

years after his Baptism.

The first veneration of the holy prince began

in Rus’ rather early. The Metropolitan of

Kyiv Saint Hilarion (+1053), in his “Word on

Law and Grace,” spoken on the day of

memory of Saint Vladimir at the saint’s crypt

in the Tithe church, calls him “an apostolic

sovereign”, like Saint Constantine, and he

compares his apostolic evangelisation of the

Kyivan-Rus’ to the evangelisation by the

holy Apostles.

На великокняжому престолі в Києві засів

Володимир, син Святослава,

наймолодший з його синів, онук святої

Ольги-Олени. За волею батька дістав він

в уділ Новгород; але в крамольній

братовбивчій війні загинув його брат

Олег, князь Деревлянської землі, убитий

був Ярополк, князь Києва, – і тоді всю

Русь поєднав у своїх руках Володимир.

Однак серед безжурного життя, серед

бенкетів і двірського гомону йому все

одно чогось не вистачало, своїм серцем

він відчував, що є якесь інше життя,

відмінне, якого не знає. У такі хвилини не

раз йому на думку приходили слова

бабусі Ольги, яка його виховала; слова,

що здавались йому тоді прекрасною

билиною про чудесне небо, про рай,

повний ангелів, серед яких царствує

великий і добрий християнський Бог.

Чув князь, що віра, яку сповідує Русь, – не

є добра, що нема сили ані в Перуна, ані в

Дажбога, ні в інших ідолів; Володимир

шукав дороги, та не міг її знайти, бачив,

що зійшов на манівці, і нераз вголос

казав, що віра руського народу не є

добра.

Прийшли болгари з-над Волги і Ками, що

визнавали магометанську віру, і почали

її прославляти, та не сподобався князеві

звичай обрізання. Прийшли німці, але й

вони відійшли ні з чим. Наважилися

прийти і жиди-хазари, та їх з ганьбою

прогнали з княжої палати, бо вони самі

визнали, що Бог відкинув їх від себе за

гріхи. Усі вони приходили, бо шукали

опіки й миру, бо боялися князя, бо

пам’ятали силу його батька, великого

Святослава, та й самі були свідками

перемог Володимира, його славного

сина.

Прийшов також грецький філософ. Він

показав Володимирові ікону Страшного

суду, показав на образі тих, що

потрапили на небо, і показав муки тих,

що потрапили в пекло, і не бракувало там

царів і могутніх князів.

Однак великий князь не хотів накидати

народові своєї волі. Був на Русі звичай,

що у важливих справах весь народ

забирав голос і вирішував, що робити. І

тоді, за порадою старшин народу, було

вислано десять мудрих, досвідчених

мужів у чужі краї, пізнати кожну віру й

обряд. Коли ж повернулися, то сказали,

що їм сподобалося у греків, що їх

богослуження вразило серця посланців,

що їм видалося немов це ангели стоять

при престолі в церкві в часі богослужіння

і радили князеві прийняти віру з Греції.

Вони сказали: “Якщо б грецька віра не

була добра, то Ольга, прамати твоя, жінка

мудріша від всіх людей, не прийняла б її!”

Так то порада старшин народу цілком

відповіла на бажання князя Володимира

– він вирішив прийняти Христову віру

східного обряду, що найбільше

відповідає руському духові.

У церкві святого апостола Якова, перед

цим навчений правд Христової віри,

Володимир прийняв хрещення з рук

Корсунського єпископа, і водночас нове

ім’я – Василій. Сталося це 988 р. Разом з

ним охрестилося дуже багато воїнів з

його дружини. Після хрещення

Володимир-Василій повінчався з Анною,

у пам’ять цієї важливої події він наказав

побудувати в Корсуні церкву святого

Василія, взяв зі собою мощі святого папи

Климента і його учня святого Фива, узяв

багатьох священиків і митрополита

Михаїла, а крім того ще церковної утварі

і святих книг, та вернувся на Русь.

Святий Володимир прийняв Христову

віру від греків тоді, коли Церква була

єдина, коли ще не було поділів, прийняв,

отже, віру з найчистішого джерела, й

водночас правдиву верховну владу

наступника святого апостола Петра,

видимого глави Христової Церкви – папи

римського.

Повернувшись до Києва, святий

Володимир (святим він став не тому, що

охрестився, а завдяки своєму справді

святому життю після хрещення)

приступив до хрещення цілого народу. За

наказом князя, ідол Перуна волокли

вулицями міста і кинули в Дніпро. Де

стояв ідол Тура, там звів храм святого

апостола Петра; на місці Волоса – церкву

святого Власія; а ще звів церкву святого

Григорія.

У Десятинну церкву, після її освячення у

996 р., було перенесено з Миколаївського

монастиря нетлінні мощі святої Ольги. А

сам Володимир став взірцем благочестя.

Довгими годинами він читав Святе

Письмо, а милосердя його було таке

велике, що навіть злочинців не хотів

карати, аж поки єпископи не порадили

йому дотримуватися закону, згідно з

яким злочин мав бути покараний.

Помер князь 15 липня 1015 р. у

Берестові. Злобний Святополк, братанич

покійного, перевіз його тіло до

Десятинної церкви. Пам’ять святих

Володимира, Ольги, Бориса і Гліба Руська

Церква почитала вже за князя Ярослава

як “прославленних”.
