Career Activities to Consider for Spring BreakBy Margaret Odell

Spring Break is an excellent time to network andinterview for summer internships or jobs. To makethe most of that time, think about where you wouldlike to spend your summer and what you would liketo be doing. Do you want to return home, stay inSanta Fe or checkout another part of the US or theworld? Would you like to have a unique internship,an interesting job, a challenging volunteer experi-ence, or a combination of study, travel and work?

Once you have possible goals in mind, thinkabout people you know who might be able to helpyou: friends, parents, friends’ parents, parents’friends, the Career Services office, SJC alumni. The more people who know that you are looking forsomething specific, the more chances you have toget constructive assistance. Does your family knowsomeone in a local business or civic organizationwho would be willing to meet with you for an “infor-mational interview?” This type of interview is

specifically to find out details about a particular career or business. It is less stressful than an actualjob interview, but can lead to a clearer understand-ing of a particular career. As an alternative, youcould volunteer with a non-profit organization fortwo weeks to show them your work ethic and skills.

With some pre-planning, job interviews are alsoquite possible during Spring Break. Any initialcontact will normally require a cover letter/letterof interest and a resume. Take time in February towork with Career Services on writing or updatingyour resume and learning what makes a strongcover letter. Once you have a solid resume, be sureto post it on Agora at the same time you are send-ing it out to potential employers. Also look foralumni mentors in Agora who can offer career andjob hunting advice or help you arrange interviewswith their own companies or with their contacts. Inaddition, look at newspapers and craigslist post-ings for the locations you are considering for sum-mer. Follow up with emails or phone calls, lettingemployers know that you would be available for aninterview in mid-March.

When your pre-planning pays off and you areasked to interview, continue to be prepared. Research the company to find out who they are andwhat they do. Put together an appropriate interviewensemble that is a bit conservative and shows thatyou are taking this meeting seriously. You only getone chance to make the right first impression. Bothmen and women should plan to have a small brief-case or binder that contains copies of you resume, business cards (if you have them), paper and pens. You want to project the image of someone who isready to work. If you are nervous about interview-ing, find someone to practice with you.

There are, of course, many other things you cando with your Spring Break, but if you are seriousabout spending at least some of that time concen-trating on summer internships and jobs, be sure toplan ahead and don’t hesitate to ask the CareerServices staff for advice or coaching.

Professional DiningWhen you are out dining with associates, pay attention to basic table manners such as keepingglassware to the right, bread plates to the left, andelbows off the table. Especially, be sure not to havemore than two drinks. Getting tipsy at businessmeetings or formal business events can be verydamaging to your image.

Public SpeakingWhen you are delivering a formal lecture, it is im-portant to stand. Standing helps draw the attentionof the listeners and help them concentrate on whatyou are saying. Also, remember to maintain eyecontact and respectful, professional language.

Relationship with the BossDon’t overdo compliments and agreements regarding your boss. Behaving differently toward asuperior can appear to be brown-nosing, and is generally unnecessary. You should, however, pro-vide your boss with more information, since he/sheis ultimately responsible for your performance.Keep your boss informed of any delays, setbacks, new developments, or concerns.

Remember the BasicsAbove all, remember the simplest manners you weretaught as a child. “Please,” “thank you,” and “you’rewelcome” are some of the most basic (and most for-gotten) basic spoken manners. Also remember toavoid raising your voice and using offensive lan-guage. These little spoken manners can make a bigdifference in making a professional impression. Information fromwww.buzzle.com/articles/business-etiquette-tips.htmlhttp://smallbusiness.chron.com/ten-business-etiquette-tips-176.htmlhttp://business.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Business_Etiquette_Tips

Business Etiquette –

Do’s and Don’ts for the WorkplaceThe workplace environment is somewhat different from social environments, and under-standing how to navigate the professional world with grace and good manners is often the “little extra something” that lets you go farther in your career. Treating people withconsideration and respect is a good start, but there are some subtle etiquette tips that can really make the difference between a pretty good employee and a great one with manyopportunities.

IntroductionsAlways introduce the lower-ranking person to a higher-ranking person. When being in-troduced, be sure to make eye contact, smile, and give a firm handshake. Handshake etiquette has gotten a bit confused in today’s culture, but a good rule of thumb is toshake hands at the beginning and end of a business encounter, firmly but not aggres-sively. These little physical connections can make a great impression and set the stagefor a positive business relationship.

CommunicationKeep emails professional and to-the-point. This excludes smiley faces and other emoticons. Care should be taken in crafting emails just as much as for published work -including spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Remember, emails are an example ofyour professional correspondence. Maintain your professional image. When you receive a phone call or email, be sure to respond promptly, even if only to let the person know you are looking into the subject. Don’t let them feel ignored.

Time EthicsIn business, time is money. Remember that everyone is as busy as you are. Respectother people’s time. If you need to interrupt someone, try to do it unobtrusively and getto the point quickly. When time is a factor in anything business related, whether it’s a deadline or a meetingstart time, don’t be late. Punctuality shows your associates that you are committed towhat you are doing.

AttireIf the dress code is uncertain, it is always safer to be overdressed than underdressed.Whether or not the dress code is clear, always dress in good taste and maintain a tidy ap-pearance. This includes bathing, ironing clothing, and maintaining personal hygiene.
