Prayer Shawl Ministry: Knitters & Crocheters A group, whose purpose is to knit/crochet prayer shawls from a simple pattern, usually meet at 10:00 AM on the Second Tuesday of the month (Oct. 13). The shawls created are given to those who are ill or lonely and in need of both warmth and prayers. If you are interested in helping or for more info, please contact Mary Fry at 717-762-1567.

Bookworms are back to the Fall schedule and will meet on Tuesday, October 6 at 6:30 in

Frank Hall to discuss: Carrying Albert Home by Homer Hickam. (Colleen Middour 301-797-9562)

Crafters meet the SECOND!!!! Thursday, October 8th, to finish Christmas Trees and

ornaments. Time: 10-3pm in Wolfe Hall downstairs. Contact Patti Lewis 717-655-5559.

Methodist men will meet on Monday, October 12 at SESCO in Mont Alto. (turn left at the square in Mont Alto. Go 150 yards and SESCO is on the left.) Thanks to Dave Souders for the use of his manufacturing facility. This is our special toy assembly meeting and due to the nature of this year's toys, special times will apply. If you prefer to be an early bird...arrive

between 4PM and 4:30PM. Otherwise please show up around 5:30PM. Pizza, (at no charge) will be served around 7PM. The elves took advantage of the pandemic and made 480 pieces to go into forty toy assemblies...so this assembly line will be interesting. If you would like more information about United Methodist Men, just ask Tom Wynkoop, Bill Hovis or any member.

Pastor’s Column

I wonder who was the first person to say: “We’ve never done it that way before.” It was

probably one of our ancient ancestors after someone showed them how to start a fire by

knocking two rocks together, and it quickly became one of our most favorite sayings…

especially in the church.

It’s easy to understand why. We get so used to how things are that we get comfortable in the

familiarity. In our daily lives we experience so much change happening at such a rapid pace

that it’s nice to think, “at least church doesn’t change.” But church does change… it has to or it

becomes irrelevant.

This year has seen a great deal of change with how things are “done” in church: virtual

worship; near empty sanctuaries (only 4 or 5 to lead and record); Zoom meetings, Bible

studies, and small group gatherings; and in-person worship done differently. And the year’s

not over yet.

Church Conference is our annual gathering of members with the District Superintendent (or

his/her representative) to discuss and approve certain financial obligations for the year,

approve lay ministers or clergy candidates, elect lay members for annual conference, and

things of that nature. In the past these conferences have taken place in person, but this year

will be a little bit different: it will by hybrid. This means that Rev. Cathy Boileau (DS for the

York district) will be at the church building for our conference, but it will also be viewable

from home through Zoom. While some details are yet to be worked out, this is what we know

so far: Cathy will be joining us for our 10:45 worship experience on November 1 and will be

delivering the sermon; immediately following the end of worship, we will move into the

“business” of conference (although non-members can stay, they cannot vote and will be

excused should they desire to leave). More information will be provided as we draw closer to

that date.

Yes, you are correct if you just said, “We’ve never done it that way before.” But think about

this: at some point, each of the things we now consider normal or traditional were once

greeted with the same response.

In Christian Love,

Pastor Brian

MISSIONS: OUR FAITH IN ACTION “For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.”

-----James 2:26----

Community Outreach At The New Hope Shelter

A huge THANK YOU goes out to Carl Henry, Bob Small, Pat

Short, Louise Hanson, Herb Meininger, and John and Cindy Hartman who put in two very hard days (almost 80 total combined hours!) in prepping and painting the front of the New Hope Shelter as they demonstrated their Faith in Action. The work crew was grateful to Evangeline VanTries, Marie Meininger and Colleen Middour who kept them fed with plenty of snacks, fruit, cookies and sandwiches.

The New Hope Shelter is thrilled with their fresh look. Unfortunately, the team was unable to complete the painting in the two scheduled days, so they will be returning to finish the project Tuesday, September 29, and Wednesday, September 30, starting at 9:00 AM each day . This is an opportunity to participate in a local Missions project with an emphasis on OUTreach. The date(s) for returning to the New Hope Shelter will be announced as soon as it is confirmed. Please prayerfully consider joining the Missions Team to complete this project. “Many hands make light work.” Contact Cindy Hartman (717-729-6139 or [email protected]) for more info.

CROP WALK 2020

From its inception in 1969, Church World Service sponsored CROP Hunger Walks have grown to include walkers of all ages, faiths and backgrounds in more than 1000 communities throughout the U.S. This year marks the 51th year (Waynesboro has been

involved for 49 years) CROP Hunger Walks have brought the interfaith community together across the country to raise funds to end hunger around the world. Participation impacts people in more than 35 countries. In many developing countries, people can walk up to 6 miles a day to get food and water. CROP Hunger Walk is an opportunity to bring awareness to these issues and raise the funds for permanent change. Traditionally, 25% of the money raised in the Waynesboro Walk goes to local ministries right here in Waynesboro (The Lunch Place, New Hope Shelter, and Waynesboro Community and Human Resources have been recipients in the past).

The 49th annual Waynesboro Area CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Sunday, October 11th, with registration beginning at 1:30 PM and the walk at 2 PM. This year the walk will again be held on the

walking path along the new Washington Township Boulevard and will feature a 2-mile and a 5-mile route. The Walk will begin and end at the soccer fields on the corner of Washington Township Blvd and Country Club Rd.

CUMC invites all interested walkers to sign up to walk on the display in Frank Hall. Our goal is 15-20 walkers raising $1500. Gather your sponsors and collect your donations BEFORE the walk; be prepared to submit your Donation Envelope on the day of the walk. For those wishing to donate (with or without walking), checks should be made payable to CWS/CROP and can be given to any walker. Please prayerfully consider participating in the CROP Walk in some way as an example of OUR FAITH IN ACTION. Please contact Cindy Hartman (717-729-6139 or [email protected]) with any questions.

Susannah’s Pantry People come to Christ Church seeking immediate food help. We do not want to turn anyone away and we especially want to meet them as Christ’s hands extended. Our pantry is OPEN – we are bagging groceries and handing them out to community members that come to the church. This is a faith-ministry ... as we give the food

away to needy families, we trust God to supply yet more! You can help by donating food.

We are currently only handing out specific items since we are bagging items and handing them out at the door. We are currently handing out (non-perishable, simple food items): spaghetti sauce, spaghetti noodles, mac-n-cheese, peanut butter, jelly, ham/chicken, tuna, beef stew or similar, soup, corn, green beans, fruit, side dish (noodles), crackers, granola bars (or similar), cereal.

Currently, the only items that we need are: canned green beans and canned corn. We are well supplied on other items— thanks to your generous donations.

Thank you for your donations and support! Currently Open: Monday – Thursday from 10 AM – 3 PM

Batteries: A battery recycle tub is by the narthex to Frank Hall – household batteries of all kinds – even hearing aid batteries can be deposited there. They will then be taken for recycling.

Empty Ink-jet Cartridges: Most inkjet cartridges can be recycled. Please place the your empty cartridges (in its original box or in a plastic bag to keep it safe from spills and damages) in the jar in the Frank Hall.

Sunday, October 18, 2020, is Laity Sunday. This is a chance for lay persons (that’s us!) to bring something

different to the worship service.

Is there something special you would like to see done on Laity Sunday this year?

Would you be willing to participate in the service on Laity Sunday?

Is there a specific topic that we could address?

Is there a way we can highlight multiple lay ministries that CUMC offers?

Is there an interactional project that you would like to see and/or participate in that day?

Please provide your input on what Laity Sunday should look like this year. Jot down your ideas and drop them

into the collection plate or email them to Cindy Hartman at [email protected]. Cindy can also be reached

by phone (or text) at (717) 729-6139. Thanks for your input.

LAY MINISTRIES SPOTLIGHT: LAITY SUNDAY

Noah’s Ark Christian Child Care A Ministry of Christ United Methodist Church

Over the past months Noah’s Ark has completed our annual state licensing inspection that went very well along with the renewal of our STAR 4 credential. September has also been a month of returning to regular school year routines for the children, parents and the Noah’s Ark teachers despite the continued COVID precautions. Parent’s anxiety still seems to be more concerning than the children who have adjusted very well. This month we will be visiting the Pumpkin Patch, but regrettably we have had to reconsider last year’s Apple Orchard visit and Soccer Shots program which was a big success. We have been able to continue to support the Penn State Mont Alto Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program. Their participation with our children’s play inevitably proves to be an opportunity for growth for both adult students and Noah’s Arks children. They have also been able to help with our school age program’s virtual learning needs on Wednesdays. In the month of September WASD students have not been attending school on Wednesdays but have remained in our care on these days. Pastor Dave visited for Blessings of the Back Packs. Last year, our students sported their Christ United Methodist Back Pack Tag throughout all of the school year and shared with others why they had this with them.

If you would like to show your support for Noah’s Ark, you may do so by participating in our Martins A+ School Rewards program. Registering allows Noah’s Ark to earn points when you do your grocery shopping at any Giant/Martins stores. You still earn your personal points for discounts, but it also supports Noah’s Ark by earning us points. We will be starting this school year off with two fundraisers that are enjoyed by our families and may be of interest. One is an Online Scholastic book order some of you may enjoy for your own grandchildren or possibly even great grandchildren. The other is a Noah’s Ark T-shirt fundraiser. A few flyers are in Frank Hall for your opportunity to participate. We normally do two large fundraisers annually, one in the fall and one in the spring, but our Spring Pancake Fundraiser was cancelled so we are attempting these small ones. Our fundraisers are used for purchasing and replacing toys and equipment at the center.

The staff and I have welcomed aboard Miss Alissa as our new Assistant Director. She is doing well at jumping right into a busy time of the year to get to know the children, staff and her role within the center. Her background consist of 3 years work experience in an early childhood program, and as a para professional at Big Spring School District’s elementary and middle schools. She is continuing her education to achieve her Associates degree and eventually her Bachelors. She has an obvious love of children, demonstrates a natural enthusiasm when watching them discover the world around them and has demonstrated respectful interactions with families and the staff. Please keep her growth in her role at Noah’s Ark in your prayers as well as a few for the families that are facing struggles that are affecting the children we care for. Thank you for your support of the ministry of Noah’s Ark. We continue to make a difference and couldn’t do it without you. Amy
