A sensational start to the Perth Mint’s new 5-coin Birds of Australia Silver Proof Series, the 2013 50c Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo 1/2oz Silver Proof has caught the eye of full-colour coin collectors around the world.

Large, loud and found right across Australia, the spectacular Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo forms an ideal subject for the Perth Mint’s wondrous full-colour minting techniques. Contrasting superbly against the shimmering silver surface of the near crown-sized 36.60mm flan, the distinctive black and red plumage of this Australian native parrot has been recreated perfectly by the craftsmen at the Perth Mint.As exclusive as it is eye-catching, the mintage of the 2013 50c Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo 1/2oz Silver Proof has been restricted to a mere 10,000 coins, with each of those coins beautifully presented in a Perth Mint case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Triggering a predictably strong wave of demand, with Australia’s distinctive birdlife extremely popular internationally, our allocation from this exclusive mintage has been severely depleted by the initial wave of orders. With demand for the Perth Mint’s full-colour animal coins reaching unprecedented heights, and many simply disappearing from the market, the time to secure this .999 silver Australian legal tender coin is right now – at the affordable Official Issue Price!

POUNCE ON THIS POSSUM!A quintessentially Australian coin, and a sensational example of the Perth Mint’s exquisite full-colour minting techniques, the 2012 50c Kookaburra 1/2oz Silver Proof has proved predictably popular with collectors. An outstanding tribute to one of the nation’s most beloved native icons, this stunning Australian legal tender coin carries a striking portrayal of a baby kookaburra upon its near crown-sized 36.60mm flan. Contrasting beautifully against the shining mirror field, the Mint’s application of full-colour will impress anyone with an appreciation of the power and precision of modern minting. A fine presentation, each Australian legal tender coin is set within an official case, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity confirming the exclusive mintage of 10,000.With a sell-out of that mintage inevitable, and our limited allocation severely depleted by demand in the very short time since

One of Australia’s most eagerly anticipated issues, we are delighted to be able to announce the release of the Perth Mint’s sensational 2013 $1 Year of the Snake High Relief 1oz Silver Proof!

Struck on an extra thick 1oz .999 fine silver flan – twice as thick as a standard 1oz Silver Proof – this exquisite Australian legal tender coin is defined by the incredible depth and detail of the designs. Standing out prominently from the pristine mirror fields, the Mint’s spellbinding new Snake reverse motif looks amazing when struck to this exceptional standard. Strictly limited to a mintage of 7,500 coins – each beautifully presented within an official Perth Mint case, complete with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity – time is of the essence for those interested in this flawless work of precious metal minting. The 7,500-coin mintage of Australia’s first Lunar High Relief 1oz Silver Proof, celebrating the Year of the Dragon, was simply devastated by demand. Indeed, heavily oversubscribed, the mintage of the 2012 $1 Dragon High Relief

1oz Silver Proof sold out on the very first day of issue, and we only had one chance to present this coin to our clients. A natural target for those who secured the 2012 issue – and for those that missed out, of course – demand for the 2013 $1 Year of the Snake High Relief 1oz Silver Proof will be huge. Don’t miss what may well be your only opportunity!

One of few selectively gold-plated Australian legal tender

annual issues, the Perth Mint’s new 2013 Year of the Snake design looks absolutely magnificent finished in the world’s favourite precious metal. Struck to the height of Specimen quality from

1oz of .999 fine silver, this larger-than-crown-size 45.60mm coin is sure to catch the eye of collectors across the globe. A prestigious gift for those born in the Year of the Snake – 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989 and 2001 – each coin is beautifully presented in an official Perth Mint case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

Undoubtedly the rarest, most sought after date in Australia’s 1911-64 Halfpenny Series, the 1923 Halfpenny is seldom offered to collectors in premium grade. An extremely rare example, we have the 1923 Halfpenny available in about Very Fine condition!

Although records indicate that the mintage of the 1923 Halfpenny was some 1.113m, it is believed that a majority of the coins struck in that year were produced with 1922 dies. With an estimated actual mintage of just 15,000, but with the number of existing examples well below that figure, the 1923 Halfpenny is acknowledged as one of the key coins of the entire Australian

Commonwealth Series. It stands to reason that, with so few examples in existence, this iconic copper coin would be scarce across all grades – and extremely rare in better quality. The object of desire of investor and collector alike, the leading light of the 1911-64 Halfpenny Series has been the focus of constant demand in the last decade or so, with increased competition leading to an escalating market value.Nowhere has the rise in value been more apparent than in premium condition. If you had acquired this key predecimal type in VF in 1999, you would have paid A$1,650. Now, with an ongoing scramble for the few high-grade examples on the market, a 1923

Halfpenny in VF catalogues at A$4,500! Although elusive, and notwithstanding the jump in value, the 1923 Halfpenny remains within the reach of those looking for a serious investment at a reasonable price, and demand for this coin marches on unabated. In much-better-than-usually-seen quality, the few examples of the 1923 Halfpenny we have available are graded about Very Fine. With high-grade examples always snapped up at super speed, we highly recommend an early order.

One of the most important, most distinctive coinage

issues in Australian history, the rare 1934-35 Centenary Florin is a fundamental element of every predecimal collection.

The only double-dated Australian coin, the only predecimal coin with the obverse legend in English and the only coin graced with Percy Metcalfe’s unique portrait of George V, the 1934-35 Centenary Florin was issued to mark the centenaries of the founding of Victoria and settlement of Melbourne. With only 75,000 coins struck at the Melbourne Mint – and 21,000

of those coins returned to the Mint to be melted down! – the actual mintage of only 54,000 has established this unique, one-year-only sterling silver type as one of the lowest mintage coins across the entire predecimal series.

The extremely low mintage has ensured that the 1934-35 Centenary Florin is scarce, regardless of the grade, and rare in the upper echelons of quality –as presented here. Always highly sought after, we have this crucial coin in both Extremely Fine and about Uncirculated condition!

Headlined by a genuine Civil War bullet, united with two US legal tender issues, this unbelievably affordable presentation offers you the chance to explore the most destructive, most bitterly divisive event in US history – the 1861-65 Civil War.Also known as the ‘War Between The States’, the US Civil War was triggered by the secession of eleven southern ‘slave states’

from the United States, and their formation of the Confederate States of America. It took more than four years of brutal warfare, and tens of thousands of casualties, for the US Federal Government (the Union) to crush southern resistance, and ensure the end of slavery. Many of the battles fought during the war are among the most famous engagements of military history, with names such as Fort Sumter, Bull Run, Shiloh and Gettysburg known across the globe. Retrieved from one of the many blood-soaked battlefields upon which the war was fought, the genuine Civil War bullet found in this set is an authentic artefact of this crucial juncture in the course of US history.

Set within an illustrated box, the real Civil War bullet is accompanied by the gold-plated 2011 Gettysburg Quarter, depicting the Gettysburg National Military Park, and the 1963 5c Battle of Gettysburg Centenary stamp. An intriguing addition to your own collection, and a fascinating gift, the USA Civil War Commemorative Set represents simply outstanding

value-for-money at just A$19.95.

Nicknamed ‘greenbacks’, the banknotes of the USA are known across the globe, and yet are missing from so many collections. Aiming to correct this oversight, Downies has secured a number of this beautifully presented, extremely affordable US note presentation, comprising superb examples of each greenback from the $1 to the $20! Superbly designed, US notes are sought after for the portrayal of some of the USA’s most famous figures, with former Presidents featuring on virtually every denomination. Comprising the $1 (George Washington), the $2 (Thomas Jefferson), the $5 (Abraham Lincoln), the $10 (Alexander Hamilton,

a Founding Father, and the first Secretary to the Treasury, killed in a duel by the US Vice President in 1804) and the $20 (Andrew Jackson), this set is not only a gallery of greenbacks – it’s a gallery of greatness as well! Also notable for the inclusion of the seldom seen $2 – only 1% of all Federal Reserve notes are of the $2 denomination, and they are apparently so scarce that most Americans have never seen one in circulation! – the 5-note set is housed within a folder. Australia’s last predecimal notes!

The dawn of the decimal era!

Drawing the curtain down on our fi rst national currency system, Australia’s fi nal predecimal notes are a compulsory element of every collection – no matter what your traditional collecting interest. First issued over half a century ago, and withdrawn 46 years ago at the dawn of the decimal era, the predecimal notes of

Queen Elizabeth II form one of the key signposts on Australia’s numismatic highway.

Issued from 1960 to 1965 under the auspices of the Reserve Bank of Australia, and carrying the Coombs/Wilson signature combination, Australia’s concluding predecimal note issue comprised the 10/-, £1, £5 and £10.

Acknowledged for the distinctive beauty of the designs, the 1960-65 Reserve Bank notes are hotly pursued as the

last of their kind – regardless of the grade. Well known for their scarcity

today – particularly when considering the higher denominations of £5 and £10 – the most surprising thing is that these historically invaluable notes can still be acquired at a reasonable price.

Sought after by collector and non-collector

alike, the chance to acquire this short-lived, important predecimal banknote collection at less than A$300 should not be ignored. Retaining their bold colours, the higher denomination £5 and £10 are presented in highly collectable Fine condition, with the 10/- and £1 notes in strong Very Fine quality.

In February 1966, Australia witnessed the birth of a new currency system, with the 10/-, £1, £5 and £10 notes consigned to history, and the $1, $2, $5 and $10 taking their place. The $5 denomination was added a year later, completing Australia’s fi rst decimal type set – distinguished by the ‘Commonwealth of

Australia’ banner.

A crucial addition to any serious

banknote collection,

and

sought after by people from all walks of life as a reminder of the ‘early days’ of decimal currency, before the replacement of paper notes with coin and polymer, the ‘Commonwealth’ banner series lasted only until 1974. It was in that year that the ALP Whitlam Government, driven by a desire to

highlight Australia’s independence from

Great Britain, modifi ed the Commonwealth

banner to read simply

‘Australia’. During this brief period, Australia’s Commonwealth banner notes were only issued under four signature combinations – 1966 Coombs/Wilson, 1967 Coombs/Randall, 1969 Phillips/Randall and 1972 Phillips/Wheeler.

Increasingly diffi cult to secure, especially in decent grade, we have the $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20 Commonwealth banner type notes in

stock – our choice of signatures. Sensational value-for-money at a mere A$169, particularly in light of the excellent quality, this short-lived 5-note series is available in impressive Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition!

The Swastika – found in every pocket…

Charting the onset of evil…

Although Hitler’s portrait never appeared on a coin, the Fuehrer’s cold, hard visage regularly adorned the philatelic issues of Nazi Germany – as illustrated by this official, genuine 19-stamp collection. Issued from 1941 until 1944, as the war slipped away from the Nazis, every stamp is in superb, unused Mint Unhinged condition.

Part of a hoard of original sheets, and therefore in flawless Mint Unhinged condition, this vivid philatelic collection comprises eight stamps (values ranging from 3 to 50 pfennig) with each stamp distinguished by the Nazi’s powerful, ever-present emblem of evil – the Swastika.

Established after the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1939, the protectorate of Bohemia & Moravia only existed until 1945. During this brief period, the protectorate issued coins and stamps – such as this 17-stamp set. Issued from 1939 to 1942, this historic ‘occupation set’ is in superb MUH.

A fascinating element of European history, and physical evidence of the Nazi’s brutal reign, the 1930s 5 Reichmark Series is a sharp illustration of the stealthy rise of the Swastika in 1930s Germany. Notable as the very first German coin to carry the Swastika, the trio is headlined by the 1934-35 Potsdam 5RM, united with the 1935-36 non-Swastika and 1936-39 Swastika

Hindenburg types. Struck from 13.88g 90% silver, and measuring 29mm in diameter, these important types surprisingly affordable at just A$40.50 for the trio – especially given the Very Fine quality.

An affordable remembrance, Germany’s 2 Reichmark was marked by the presence of the Swastika following the complete ‘Nazification’ of the nation’s coinage after 1936. Imbued with a dark resonance denied most currency, the 62.50% silver 2RM carries the Swastika on the reverse, and the distinctive portrait of President von Hindenburg upon the obverse. Graded VF, this 25mm, 8g 2RM is a bargain at a mere A$9.95 apiece.

An unusual memento of Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland on the 1st of September

1939 – the event that sparked World War II – this pair of Mint Unhinged WWII General Government Postage Dues issues feature the Eagle (a recurring motif throughout the history of Germany) standing over the Swastika.

Reinforcing the all-pervasive, invidious nature of Nazi power, lower denomination coinage was redesigned during the 1930s, with the Swastika found on every coin from 1936 until the end of WWII.

Authentic artefacts from the darkest days of

European history, the 1936-45 3-Coin Set includes the 1, 5 & 10 Reichspfennig, with the 1940-45 Pair incorporating the zinc 5 &10 Reichspfennig. In highly collectable Fine to Very Fine, these historically crucial sets represent sensational value for genuine 3rd Reich currency issues!

A sensational opportunity to secure genuine examples of one of the most famous military decorations in history, we have secured stock of Germany’s World War I and World War II Iron Cross medals!Among the world’s most celebrated

military decorations, the Iron Cross was created by King Frederick III in March 1813 to reward acts of heroism or leadership during the Napoleonic Wars. A century later, the outbreak of hostilities in WWI saw Wilhelm II re-institute the Iron Cross as Germany’s major military

award, again presented for bravery. Exactly 25 years on, Adolf Hitler would follow the Kaiser’s lead, with the Iron Cross revived on 1 September

1939 – the day that Nazi Germany invaded Poland and WWII began.Whilst both carry the original 1813 Iron Cross design on the obverse, the WWI and WWII Iron Cross medals are distinguished by different inscriptions on the reverse. The WWI Iron Cross features the date 1914, united with ‘W’ for Wilhelm in the centre, with the Nazi version carrying 1939, and incorporating the Swastika in place of the ‘W’.The cornerstone of any serious militaria collection, this is your chance to secure both the WWI and WWII Iron Cross. One of few full-colour Silver Proofs released by the Royal Australian Mint in recent years, this beautifully designed legal tender coin forms an eye-catching, exclusive tribute to the Royal Visit to the Solomon Islands in September of 2012 by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

An official legal tender $2 issue of the Solomon Islands, struck to the height of Proof quality from a troy ounce of .999 fine silver, this impressive coin is most notable for the enchanting full-colour portrayal of William and Catherine. Dominating the broad 40mm diameter flan, the charming snapshot of the beloved Royal Couple is framed with an inscription and a delicately sculpted border of English roses. Highly reminiscent of Stuart Devlin’s many Royal Family commemoratives, this ornate motif is also found on the unprecedented obverse design, encircling the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. An essential acquisition for collectors of Royal Family memorabilia, and any full-colour coin enthusiast, the mintage of this delightful legal tender tribute has, somewhat surprisingly, been restricted to a mere 2,500 coins.
