The RAM Master CollectionAn irresistible opportunity for Downies clients to secure utterly unique early strike Australian legal tender types, we are delighted to present selected coins from the Royal Australian Mints Master Collection!

The RAMs Master Collection is an assemblage of production standard master coins, used to ensure the highest quality in the creation of Australias coinage. Representing a huge number of Australian circulating and collector coin types from the 1980s to 2014, each master coin was not included in the official mintage figure and, until recently, had never been offered for sale. Struck very early in the production process, these coins are, as the Mint has stated, the greatest amongst equals.

Following a re-evaluation of its inventory policy, the Mint decided to offer this important collection of coins for public sale. Just as we were chosen by the Reserve Bank of Australia to present the Gold Coins of the RBA Collection in 2005, Downies Australian Coin Auctions was given the privilege of bringing these master production coins to the market, and the sale was a great success.

We secured a small selection from the sale to present to our clients, but you will have to act with super speed. Quite literally, there is only one production standard master coin for each of these types in existence. Each of those coins features the RAMs Production Standard Master red edge-mark signifying that it is a part of the Master Collection, and is presented with a Certificate of Authenticity hand-signed by the RAM CEO, Ross MacDiarmid.

Featuring Parliament House on one side, and the Australian Capital Territorys Coat of Arms on the other, it has been speculated that the 50c Canberra Trial Pattern was under consideration as a tribute to Australias then new Federal Parliament House in 1988. Possibly handed out to dignitaries for assessment, much like Australias 1919-21 Square Pennies, neither design found on this double-reverse type was used for a commemorative 50c. Ultimately, the 1988 50c commemorative honoured Australias bicentenary.

Ruling during the dark days of the Crisis of the 3rd Century, Probus fought valiantly against foreign powers and those seeking to usurp his role as emperor, before murdered by his own troops in 282AD.

Indicative of the chaos into which the Empire plunged in the 3rd century, Postumus was able to establish a breakaway Gallic Empire comprising Spain, Gaul & Britain, which he ruled for nearly a decade.

Struck in Britain by barbarians in imitation of Roman coinage, Barbarous Radiates were unofficial coins created to overcome a currency shortage triggered by the Crisis of the 3rd Century. Emperor of our choice sensational value at under $20!

The famous Wolf & Twins Bronze was issued in the name of Constantine the Great the man who vanquished a variety of rivals to play a key role in ending the Crisis of the 3rd Century, and return the Roman Empire to some sort of stability. Strong gVF quality!

Undermined & challenged by future Emperor Philip I, Gordian demanded the troops choose between the two. They chose Philip; Gordian was slaughtered.

Dealing with the same problems as faced his predecessors, Gallienus ruled as the Empire stood on the brink of collapse until killed by a group which included two future Emperors, Claudius II & Aurelian.

Conquering the Alemanni and Goths, hence his name, Claudius II Gothicus did his best to shore up the crumbling Roman Empire, before succumbing to the plague caught from the vanquished Gothic tribes.

In 244AD, the 5-year-old Philip II was named Caesar by his father Emperor Philip I. Raised to the position of co-ruler in 247, Philip was killed in 249 after his father was defeated and killed by Trajan Decius.

Undermined by famine, plague and barbarian attacks, Gallus reign was both fraught and short. Facing a revolt, Gallus was killed by his own troops when they realised the superiority of their opponents.
