BLESSED TRINITY PARISH CLEVELAND, OH
From Fr. Doug’s Desk
Consubstantial what?
This week after the homily we will be looking at the
creed. I want to spend some time here talking about two
phrases that appear in the creeds.
In the Roman Missal Third edition, there is a choice
to do the newly-revised Nicene Creed or the newly-
revised Apostle’s Creed. In the Nicene Creed we
encounter the phrase, “consubstantial with the Father.”
What does that mean? Dominican Father Romanus
Cessario explains:
For the last 40 years or so, Catholics have become
accustomed to express their belief in the sameness of
the Father and the Son by the expression, “one in Being
with the Father." This translation came about because
certain experts had opined that a literal translation
of the Latin term “consubstanialem," that is,
consubstanital, would be too unfamiliar to the everyday
churchgoer.
However, the expression "one in Being with the
Father" does not translate “consubstantialem." The
expression is too vague. Since God creates and sustains
all that exists, everything in some sense can be said to
be one in being with God. Not that everything is the
divine nature but that everything outside of God
remains dependent on the divine nature for its borrowed
existence. The sameness that the Eternal Son enjoys
with the Father is not like that. Instead, this sameness
arises from the specific substance or nature of the
Godhead. Catholic faith holds that each of the three
Divine Persons share one and the same divine nature or
substance. Just as the mystery of the Blessed Trinity
stands at the heart of our belief, so also it grounds our
salvation.
Although words are important, I think we do
ourselves a disservice if we get too hung up on this
particular word. God is unexplainable. This word is
meant to explain in one word what Scripture says in
John 10:30, “I and the Father are one”. The early church
did not concern itself how Jesus and the Father are one.
They simply affirmed it. Consubstantial is a word that
describes that. It is not a good word to pray with, but we
are stuck with it. If someone asks you what it means,
you can say it means “one in being” with the previous
provisos.
The other Creed that we can use at Mass is the
Apostle’s creed. The new translation states, “He
descended into hell.” What does this mean?
Here’s a reply a reply from Fr. Ray Ryland, Ph. D.:
In the original Greek of the New Testament there are
two different words sometimes translated by the English
word “hell.” Gehenna (the Greek form of an Aramaic
term Jesus used) designates the place of eternal torment
and is the equivalent of what our contemporaries
usually mean when they say “hell” (see, for example,
Mt 5:22, 29, 30). The other Greek word is Hades, which
simply means the place of departed spirits, with no
connotations of punishment or suffering.
The original form of the Apostles’ Creed stated that
Jesus descended, not into Gehenna, but into Hades.
This reflects the teaching of 1 Peter 3:18–19, which
speaks of Jesus’ ministry to the “spirits in prison” after
His death. These were the righteous dead, such as the
Old Testament saints, for whom Jesus had not yet
opened the gates of heaven. The creed’s reference to
Jesus’ descent into Hades tells us that the redemption of
Jesus Christ extends backward in time as well as
forward to the end of history.
So, why are we using the words “Jesus descended
into hell” when we don’t really mean that in English?
Perhaps because it shocks us and forces us to think
about what it means for Jesus to descend among the
dead. In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the
rich man is in what we would call hell, a place of evil
and torment. Lazarus is resting at the bosom of
Abraham, a place of natural bliss before Jesus comes to
take Abraham and Lazarus both to his kingdom. It is to
this place that the phrase refers.
