MINISTRY SUNDAY

October 6, 2019 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

And you thought October was just the 10th month of the year…

Well… it is that. But it is also the month of the Holy Rosary… it is also Respect Life month… it is also Breast Cancer awareness month… it is also World Blindness Awareness month… and it is also National Pizza month… along with a bunch of other designations.

Pope Francis’ prayer intention for October is that the breath of the Holy Spirit engender a new missionary “Spring” in the Church. Sounds like the Pope and our local Archdiocese are pretty much in sync…. since we are having our convocation to “Enflame Our Hearts” this weekend. You’ll be hearing more about that.

And you thought that this weekend was just the 27th

Sunday in Ordinary time…

Well…. it is that. But it is also Respect Life Sunday. Check out Archbishop’s column in this week’s Leaven if you haven’t already done that. This week it is all about the scourge of abortion. His column is always a good read. Did you know that Archbishop is Chairman of the USCCB Pro-Life Committee? Did you also know that Archbishop’s motto on his coat of arms is “Life will be Victorious”?

Since today is Respect Life Sunday, the annual Life Chain prayer vigil is today. Our parish’s designated spot is the SW corner of 95

th and Nall. It’s at 1:30pm on Sunday, October 6

th, so if you’re

reading this column before Sunday noon… maybe you can make it there.

And you thought our Gospel today was just about the quantity of the Apostles’ Faith…

Well… it is kind of that. After all, the Apostles asked Jesus to increase their Faith. And it is also about how the Apostles… and we… can increase our Faith… and not necessarily in terms of quantity… but more so in terms of quality.

Jesus reminds us that the tiniest fragment of Faith can accomplish the extraordinary. Faith… in any quantity… can do marvelous things… because of the trusting relationship Faith points to between God and us. The size of Faith does not matter… because God is the one doing the moving.

And you thought the word Faith was just a noun…

Well… it is a noun. In addition Faith is also an action verb. Even a little bit of Faith can cause amazing things to happen in our lives. Faith leads to action. Faith speaks volumes. Think about all the Faithful people in your lives… and how they lived their Faith that made you better… as you worked to increase your Faith.

Faith needs to be exercised to be kept strong.

Faith-filled Blessings, Deacon Tom

ETERNAL REST GRANT UNTO THEM, O LORD

Jesus told St. Margaret Mary that He suffers more now because of the indifference and ingratitude of men for the Blessed Sacrament than He did during His entire passion. For this reason Jesus makes this appeal to each of us, “I thirst with such a terrible thirst to be loved by your in this Most Blessed Sacrament.”

ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Partnering in education for a lifetime. Since 1873

Dear Friends of Christ,

The crisp cool October mornings are finally here! Fall is a favorite season for many of us. Not only is it a beautiful time of year, but also everyone seems to be settled back into their school routines. The family calendar is typically packed with sporting events and visits to the pumpkin patch: seasonal outings that make family life fun and memorable. October also means we are only weeks away from our annual school auction. It has been a pleasure to watch our auction committee in full action; their energy and enthusiasm is impressive. Our school community owes Kate Hogard, Ashely Rieke, and Katie Kolich an enormous “Thank You” for everything they have done and are still doing in order to host this special event. Over the past year, this lovely group of ladies have been busy shuffling, hustling, and burning the candle at both ends trying to finalize all the many details it takes to roll out this highly anticipated annual school event.

This year the auction’s theme is “A Night in Black and White.” The auction committee has done a fantastic job blending the traditions we have all come to enjoy, along with a few new nuggets of fun as well. If you have not already bought your tickets or signed up to volunteer, I would encourage you to do both. The overall goal of the auction is to raise funds that will help keep tuition costs down for all families. Your involvement at any level helps us not only reach this goal, but also gathering as a large enthusiastic crowd reminds all of us of the very special community we have created for our children. The official count down is on!!!! Mark your calendar and plan to attend on November 2nd. You are promised an entertaining evening among many “Hearts Aflame for the Love of Christ” for our children and our parish community.

With a grateful heart, Jodie Maddox, Principal

VOCATION CORNER

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

If you are a person being called, listen! Pray for wisdom and seek further guidance. Fr. Dan Morris, our archdiocesan Director of Vocations is readily available to help you discern your true vocation

(647-0303 or via email at: [email protected]).

If you are not being called to the religious life, you may actually know someone who is. Pray for the wisdom and courage needed to help them hear their true vocation.

And speaking of someone who answered his calling, Msgr. Mullen’s birthday is on the 11th. Let us give thanks that his ears, mind and heart were open to God’s call.

MARRIAGE MINUTE

Want to steal all the joy out of your marriage?

Have a pity party! We know that sitting in the corner thinking about how unappreciated we are only makes us more miserable, but while we are in the midst of it, it can be difficult to get out of it. Here are some suggestions: • Pray for the grace of gratitude. • Make a list of your spouse’s thoughtful gestures (do NOT make one of your own!) Share it with him/her. • Prayerfully read this weekend’s Gospel: Luke 17:5-10. Pray for the humility of the servant. • ASK your spouse for the help you need!

The noise of a pity party hardens our hearts and keeps us from hearing God’s voice. Ask Him for help to rise above it today.
