October Daily Bread. We serve a faithful God. He keeps his promises. A promise is a statement that you will do something. Some promises are positive and some are negative. Some are conditional and some are unconditional. Humans find promises hard to keep. God does not. He does what he says he is going to do. This month’s Daily Bread will focus on promises from both the O.T. and N.T. As you read these verses think about which ones have been fulfilled and which ones will be fulfilled in the future. Please give your email address to the office if you have not been receiving these emails. Copies of Daily Bread emails for October are at the Information Center.

The Primetimers “Cookin’ by the Creek at Barry and Tina’s Place” has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 5:30 p.m. Transportation will be provided from the church parking lot. Events are Primetimers-sponsored. Others are always welcome to join us. During our month-long prayer

emphasis, we used several rooms for prayer. We are happy to share that we now have a special place designated for prayer. The room adjacent to the Library (just off the Auditorium) will now be the Prayer Room. This space has been utilized in a number of ways through the years, including the Virginia Park’s Class and holding reference books for the Library. Currently a Ladies’ Prayer Meeting gathers there Wednesday evenings at 7:00. Each Sunday afternoon at 5:30 an elder will be in the room for prayer. Otherwise, this space is open for anyone who may need a more private space to gather with a friend and pray. As Paul wrote, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians. 5:16-18.)

Open:Th

ink of a time w

hen you felt free. Was it after graduating?

Getting out of the m

ilitary? Retirement? Paying off a debt?

Finishing a big project that had been consuming you? Vacation?

This w

eek’s study guide blends the two usual sections:

Dig: Scripture &

Discussion A

ND

Reflect: M

ake it Real.

Review the lesson from

last week on “Free” Th

inking. What did you

take away from

last week’s lesson?

We w

ere created for a world w

ithout shame. H

owever, our w

orld is dom

inated by shame, and the presence of sham

e always m

eans an absence of freedom

. The bondage of sham

e almost alw

ays accompanies

all other bondage; but thankfully, God does not w

ant us to be chained to our past m

istakes. The reality is that m

any heroes in scripture had serious skeletons in their closet. Share a few

examples. W

ith that in m

ind, why can w

e believe their redemptive stories and not our ow

n?

One of the lies that incarcerate us is “I am

what I did.” Th

ere is a dif-ference betw

een shame and guilt. Sham

e says what w

e did is who w

e are—

“I am a m

istake.” Guilt says “I m

ade a mistake.” G

uilt can be healthy if it leads to confession and repentance. Sham

e isn’t healthy. H

ow can listening to the voice of your Father drow

n out the other voices telling you w

ho you are? Share some practical exam

ples of how

this has played out in your life.

Another lie that incarcerates people is “H

iding is helping.” When A

dam

and Eve felt shame, their first response w

as to cover up. Most still use

the “fig leaf” approach to deal with sham

e today. Some hide through

isolationism - refusing to com

mit to vulnerable, transparent relation-

ships. Some hide through judgm

entalism, - com

paring themselves to

those they deem even m

ore shameful. A

nd some hide through legal-

ism, w

hich is religion’s attempt to pay back G

od. How

have you experi-enced these w

ays of hiding in your life? What has helped you to over-

come this lie? W

here do you still need help in this area?

Read Romans 7:24-25 and 8:1-3. W

e studied two truths that liberate:

The purchase of N

O! and the prom

ise of NO

W! W

hich of those prom-

ises resonates the most w

ith your life today? Why?

Read Hebrew

s 12:2. Why is it im

portant to remem

ber that Jesus took your sin and your sham

e to the cross? Why do w

e try to take it back instead of leaving it at the cross?

Read Romans 3:23-24. W

hich part of this verse are you most fam

iliar: “for all have sinned” or “justified freely by his grace?” W

hy do suppose that is?

When did you first feel free in C

hrist? Was it at your conversion, or did

it come later? W

ill you share how this happened for you? If you have

not yet experienced freedom in C

hrist, why not?

What prevents you from

praying: Lord, may your Spirit reveal to m

e anything that I m

ay be thinking (that I may not even be aw

are) that is out of line w

ith your truth, with your character, w

ith your heart?

The greatest w

rong is to not leave my greatest w

rong with Jesus. Sham

e thrives in secrecy, but loses its pow

er when exposed. W

hy is this so hard?

What insight, story or observation from

this week’s lesson did you find

to be most helpful or eye-opening? Explain.

Free from Sham
