Discussion
Discuss the tension of being in the w
orld but not of the world. O
ne could say that, technically, w
e are not aliens or exiles. We are citizens
in this great country. And yet, this w
orld is not our home. Paul
wrote in Philippians 3:20 that our citizenship is in H
eaven. Review
1 Peter 2:11-12. Metaphorically, all follow
ers of Christ are exiles or
foreigners. How
you do you understand this ongoing tension?
Read Daniel 1:1-2. Th
e book of Daniel begins w
ith the announce-m
ent that God w
as letting the Babylonians take over the Israelites. H
ow does know
ing God allow
ed such a tragedy help you understand the w
ay God deals w
ith us today?
Read Daniel 1:3-7. Th
ere must have been a lot of pressure to conform
for the young Israelites. W
hat are some of the greatest pressures w
e face in today’s w
orld that try to mold us into som
ething other than w
hat God w
ants?
Instead of pulling away, fighting back or giving in, D
aniel models a
more w
insome and creative w
ay to live in Babylon. We do not have
to “be like” to be liked. How
should you decide when to go along
with culture, and w
hen to resist? What are som
e things that help you resist the flow
of culture?
Read Daniel 2:1-13. N
ebuchadnezzar was frustrated by the inability
of his experts to give him the w
isdom he needed. W
hy couldn’t these experts provide the answ
ers he demanded? W
hat are some of the
sources people go to today for wisdom
that fail to deliver?
Read Daniel 2:14-18. O
nce again Daniel is caught in the consequence
of others’ failings, and once again he responds with calm
and tact. D
aniel responded to a threat on his life by calling out to God in the
company of his closest friends. W
hat does this tell us about the im-
portance of prayer and comm
unity?
Read Daniel 2:19-23. O
bviously it is easier to be thankful after a trial has passed, yet D
aniel thanked God for giving the m
eaning of the dream
before he even knew if it w
ould save his life. What is the key to praising
God in the m
iddle of your trial, instead of waiting to see how
it ends?
Read Daniel 2:44-45 and Luke 1:31-33. D
aniel’s interpretation challenged N
eb’s view of his ow
n importance, but honoring G
od was
more im
portant to Daniel. W
hat can we learn from
the way he handled
the situation?
Reflect: M
ake It Real
Choose battles that really m
atter. What can w
e learn from D
aniel?
Hold your convictions graciously. W
hat are some practical ways you
can hold to your convictions without ever being rude, obnoxious, or
disrespectful? How do we avoid the desire to w
ithdraw or become passive?
Remem
ber that God is on the throne. Th
e sovereignty of God is a huge
theme in the book of D
aniel. Why is it im
portant to remem
ber that G
od is in control of who is in control? H
ow should that truth im
pact how
you hear the news? Respond to culture? Interact w
ith others?
Faith is not developed in a vacuum. Life in exile dem
ands trust; trust is developed by the trials. O
bedience must trum
p convenience for faith to last in Babylon. H
ow have you seen this play out in your life?
The future is not for kings to decide. Th
e future is not up for grabs, because it is in G
od’s hands. So it is important to keep the activities and
plans of the self-important in perspective. H
ow should know
ing this truth im
pact the way you live?
Our foundation is not shaken if it’s built on the Rock! Th
e Rock of Ages
is not held by human hands, because it does not depend on hum
an strength to endure. To thrive in Babylon, w
e must stop investing so
much in the “statue.” W
hat are some w
ays that Christians are tem
pted to invest m
ore and care more about the “statue” instead of the “rock”?
What are som
e practical ways w
e can we seek first the kingdom
of God
while living in Babylon?
