St. Ann’s Parish 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 25, 2015
When we lose a loved one, a natural desire we all have is to honor their memory. We immediately
buy a nice casket and dress them for burial in appropriate clothing. Sometimes we put items of significance
in the casket with them, and we choose the nicest burial place we can afford for them. In addition, we
sometimes make donations to charities that were particularly dear to them. Other times, especially in
church, we like to buy items in memory of them that will be used at Mass or that will adorn our church.
We often choose to offer the bread and wine, the sanctuary lamp, buy flowers, etc. All of these are
beautiful ways to honor our loved ones, but they really help comfort us; they don’t make any difference to
the person who has died. The one thing that does is to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the repose of
their soul.
Throughout the year our Masses are offered for a particular individual or group of family members,
all at the request of someone who has come to the rectory and requested a Mass. It is especially common at
the time of a wake: we come and request a Mass card and offer a Mass for the soul while bringing a card to
the family. It is a wonderful way to comfort them on their loss. It is our firm belief that we can apply the
merits of any particular Mass to a soul in Purgatory. This is based on the story in the 2nd Book of
Maccabees where Judas Maccabeus takes up a collection and sends it to Jerusalem to have an expiatory
sacrifice offered for soldiers who had been slain in battle. The Scriptures state the following about what he
did: “In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection in mind;
for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for
the dead. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in
godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be
absolved from their sin.” (2 Mc.12:43-46) We therefore are fully justified in our belief that we can offer
Masses for the dead; in fact, it is the most important thing we ever do for them. While we still have a large
number of requests for Masses here at St. Ann’s, other parishes are seeing a steep decline in Mass requests.
In many situations, the reason for this is that, while our elderly parishioners continue to request Masses,
younger people do not. Somehow our younger generations have forgotten about the importance of offering
Masses for the repose of the souls of our loved ones. Please do not forget that offering the Holy Sacrifice
of the Mass for a loved one who has died is the single most important thing we do for them, and praying
for the dead is one of the spiritual works of mercy. Next Monday, November 2nd is All Souls Day. It is a
day the Church sets aside every year to pray for the dead, especially souls in Purgatory who have no one
on earth to pray for them. Here at St. Ann’s we celebrate an All Souls Novena. For nine days beginning on
November 2nd, we offer one Mass a day for all those enrolled in our All Souls Novena. Do not forget to
enroll your loved ones who have died in our novena, even if they passed away many years ago. All Souls
envelopes are available at the rear of the church and chapel.
