endowments. The world around us calls us to seek to identify ourselves
apart from God. The world around us would tell us that we are predis-
posed to be who we are and that we should seek to find our inner being.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ calls us to identify ourselves in and through
our relationship with God. Paul writes in Ephesians 2:10, “We are his
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God pre-
pared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” In 2 Corinthians 5:17
Paul writes, If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” In Christ we are
renewed, restored, redeemed and regenerated to the image we were creat-
ed, the very image of God. In Christ, I am a child of God! This is my
primary identity, it changes my view of the world, my relationships, re-
sponsibilities and purpose for my life. All that I say and do seeks to do
God’s will. I seek my identity in and through God’s Word. I do this not
because I have to but because of God’s divine love for me poured out
through our Lord and Savior Jesus. God’s loves me! God loves you!
We are redefined in God’s love and we desire to love Him in return by
being His people wherever we are. Our identity is God’s children!
Your Servant in Christ

Some of the most powerful pieces of scripture for me are
the parables. Jesus often told stories with made up
characters and situations to teach and explain how real life works and gives
us a deeper understanding of His kingdom and how it works. As most of
you know I'm a big fan of the fantasy genre of stories. While not scripture I
think stories set in a made up and even fantastical context can instruct us
about the real world we live in. I spent some of my most treasured time
while on sabbatical reading and writing stories that point to God's real love
from a totally imaginary perspective.
Knowing this, my friend Chris Ewald recently sent me link to a video
(movie) based on the story "The Pilgrim's Progress." This book was
written in the 1600's by a Christian man named John Bunyan. It is an
allegorical story following the journey of a man named "Christian" from his
home, the city of destruction, to the celestial kingdom (heaven.) This
recently produced movie, while animated, is very well done and enjoyable (Continued on page 16)
The Power of Imagination— Pastor Marty
“We give thanks to God for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our
prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and
labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we
know brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel
came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit
and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be
among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the
Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the
Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Mace-
donia and in Achaia.” (1 Thessalonians 1:2-7)
Who are you? How would you identify yourself? How would you de-
fine yourself? The truth of the matter is that we are shaped and influ-
enced by others and the world around us would tell us that we ought to
self-identify. Stephen Covey, author of “Seven Habits of Highly Effec-
tive People, writes, “Every human has four endowments - self aware-
ness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give
us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to
change.” God has truly created us magnificently and we do have these

The Mission of Immanuel Lutheran Church is connecting people to Jesus Christ.
for all ages. As I learned more about it, I found out that it is free to show
at churches and I got excited to share it with all of you. I've arranged for
us to have a screening on Sunday October 20th at Immanuel. The movie
is appropriate for all ages. Children will enjoy the animated adventure
story while youth and adults will not just enjoy the story but the deeper
message contained with in the story.
I'm excited to use this movie as an excuse to gather our extended Church
family including families from Little Lambs, our college group and
anyone else who would like to spend an afternoon among friends
watching an enjoyable movie and growing in one's faith. Watching this
movie and preparing to show it to all of you has me excited to return in
earnest to my own writing project of the past few years.
There is more information about our screening on the back cover and
front inside cover of this newsletter, if you would like to learn more. I'm
excited to share this time with you all of you and celebrate the joy of a
good story that connects each of our own stories with our walk with
God. Have a blessed October and I'll see you on the 20th!
In Christ,
Pastor Marty

LITTLE LAMBS SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST
• Remember we will be using “sign-up genius” again this year—which is an on-line sign-up tool. Watch for it prior to the ice cream social, conferences (maybe) and Thanksgiving Feast!
• We have limited openings for the 2019-2020 school year. Contact the office for more information.
• ALL parents are encouraged to come and be a apart of the activities at Little Lambs. If you have not already done so, please take a moment to look over the volunteer form and pick an event or two where you can help out.
• Thursday, October 3 at 5:30– 7:00 p.m.: There will be a Preschool Open House and Ice Cream Social beginning at 5:30 p.m. Come see your child’s classroom and make your own ice cream sundae!
• October is Fire Safety Month—a fire truck is tentatively scheduled to come to our school! (based on fire department availability)
• There will be no school on the following days: Monday October 14 Friday October 25
• October 16 & 17: Field trip to Johnson’s Pumpkin Patch
• October 30 & 31: Classroom Halloween parties, along with a “Trunk-or-Treat” costume parade!
• Parent teacher conferences will be held during the week of November 11.
Preschool is off to a great start this year! We have met many new
friends and we are learning so many new things!!
The month of October is packed with lots of fun and learning!
We have the fire department coming to our school to teach us about fire safety and
we will see a real fire truck up close!
We also will have our Open House and Ice Cream Social on October 3 at 5:30pm.
This gives parents and families a chance to visit their children’s classroom and see
all the exciting things they have been learning about his year. The evening also
includes our ice cream social in fellowship hall. You can come down and make
your very own ice cream sundae with all of your favorite toppings.
We will also be going to Johnson’s Pumpkin Patch in October. We will learn all
about pumpkins and how they grow.
We are having our Halloween parties on October 30 and 31. The children get to
wear their costumes at school that day and we are inviting our parents to come and
decorate their trunks and we will do trunk or treating in our parking lot at 11:15.
We still have a couple of openings in preschool that we would love to fill, so if you
know anyone looking for their children to have a wonderful start to their education
career, please send them to Little Lambs. It’s not too late to register.

University Village Family
The October Family Night at University Village is
scheduled for Tuesday, October 15 at 6 p.m. It is
planned to be our annual pumpkin carving event. Your support is invited
by praying for the event, coming to help with the carving , serving a
snack, and/or gifting some pumpkins for the children. Will you help
send the love of Jesus to our neighbors to the north???
Despite the unusual weather, Hope Garden has
produced vegetables to share with food pantries in
DeKalb. Thanks to those who gave seeds and plants
and especially to Ann and Roger Nelson and Gary
and Holly Gresholdt, there have been green beans,
green and other peppers, tomatoes, egg plant, brussels
sprouts, cabbages, cucumbers, sweet corn, and potatoes to pass on. We have
also had various flowers to use and to supply butterflies with sustenance.
Praise God for His goodness to us in enabling a harvest!
Excerpts from A note from Barb Food Mart:
(Entire letter can be found on the bulletin board in the narthex)
Thank you for the fresh produce you brought in on behalf of the church in
July and August. Our families are always happy to see fresh produce,
especially of such high quality. We are honored that you chose Barb Food
Mart to support and want you to know that our families are very grateful for
your help.
We appreciate your support as we try to reduce food insecurity for our
students and families in the DeKalb School District. … We are seeing as
many as 80 people in the pantry each week … In addition to providing food,
we offer workshops for those waiting to shop on topics such as nutrition,
parenting, safety and health issues.
… More information is available on our website at https://sites.google.com/

I would like to thank all who volunteer their time and talent in keeping the
altar, the flowers, the linens, and the communion sets clean, arranged and
presented to the Glory of God Our Father every month.
Consider becoming an Altar Guild volunteer for the upcoming year.
Everyone who does these tasks knows what a gift it is to be a part of this
work. Take a moment to reflect on what you have to offer Altar Guild and
know that you will receive more blessings than you will ever be able to give.

Lassoed by the Lord’s Love
The theme for Pumpkin Festival is
A Wild West
Pumpkin Fest! The parade is Sunday,
October 27, 2019.
Lassoed by the Lord’s Love is the theme that we have chosen for our Wild
West float for Pumpkin Fest! In October we will be needing helpers to get
our float in shape. When was the last time that you put a float together?
Maybe now is the time to step up those skills! Join us! Work dates will be
in the Sunday bulletins. We also will need members to ride (not on a horse)
on the float and walk. Look for a sign-up sheet in the narthex, or just show
up.
In the past we have been the ONLY church in the parade, so our witness has
been special in sharing thoughts of our Lord to parade watchers. HE lives
through us there.
The Welcome Picnic on August 23 served nearly 200 which included a special
group of 23 Chinese visiting students. Weekly cafes have averaged about 100
attending. Striking is the breadth of countries represented at the cafes--students
from all over the world, while still having a good group of Chinese and
Indians. On October 4 instead of the cafe, there will be a "barn dance" at a
nearby farm providing another cultural experience. Otherwise, each Friday
night will have a cafe throughout the NIU fall semester of classes.
Also at Immanuel we have two conversation classes set for each week with
students from China and Sudan so far.
PLEASE PRAY for both of these aspects of our ministry and join in as you
feel called to do so. The students are very open to talking about their countries,
America, and God.
A note from Network of Nations:
Dear Immanuel Lutheran Church
It is a great honor to be able to have Network of Nations (Intercultural Café) at
your locations. We thank you and pray for you that you will be abundantly
blessed. You are a light to this city. Sincerely
Lisa Dietrich & the Executive Board
