Everyone a Mathematician Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils,

This new school year will see the children of Molescroft Primary School engage in Maths Mastery. Chosen by both the Department for Education and the National Centre for the Excellence of Teaching in Mathematics (NCETM) we here at Molescroft aim to develop even more outstanding mathematicians.

What does it mean to Master something? Our first thought would be that this is something elitist that only the best of us will be able to do…think of the master craftsmen, artists, musicians. Maths mastery is not this. Maths mastery, as an idea, is built on the knowledge that Mathematics should be achievable for all. To master something is:

• to know how to do it• it becomes automatic and I don’t need to think about it• I’m really good at doing it• I can show someone else how to do it

Think about driving a car or riding a bicycle. We can apply this to maths as well. The idea of a mastery curriculum has borrowed greatly from the way in which children are taught in countries such as China, Singapore and Japan and is constructed on two very simple concepts. The first is that the children study just a few concepts each year, but study them in depth so there is sufficient time to comprehend one concept before the next one is introduced. The second is that the sequence of topics are controlled so that, as much as possible the mental distance between concepts is small and the previously learned concept will help in learning each new one. continued overleaf…

After meeting with Mr. Loncaster and Mr. Atkinson

who is our Maths coordinator and a Maths Specialist Teacher,

the members of the Friends Association committee have agreed to fund the launch of

Maths Mastery and its resources for up to £6000.

Once again we are indebted to you as parents who do so much to raise funds which continue to make such a positive difference to the

opportunities we can offer our children.

We are also lucky that Mrs. Lazenby is also a Maths

Specialist Teacher. So we have two MaSTs on the staff!

MORE ON MATHS MASTERY This generation will not find it acceptable to say “I can’t do Maths”. Continued from page 1.Interestingly, this is not a new idea for the United Kingdom. Theorists and educationalists have been suggesting this approach since as far back as the 1950s! The government even published a report in 1982 (the Cockcroft report) which the Singaporeans have based their entire Mathematics curriculum on.

In the United Kingdom, mathematics teaching has often involved demonstration of an example by a teacher which is followed by routine practice of the same routine. Maths mastery teaches the children to master a concept through variation. It highlights the essential features of a ‘routine’ by varying, ever so slightly, the way in which images are presented to the children. Making them think.

This is an example of a typical fractions puzzle. Variation develops the children’s mathematical ability and confidence without having to resort to memorising procedures to pass tests – making mathematics more engaging and interesting. The way that the children are taught is through the use of textbooks. Carefully written, beautiful examples of mathematics that the children read and explore with their peers and their teacher. The most interesting idea is that the children see and read the mathematics in their books. In much the same way as we will read a range of stories to understand fiction, or read a range of information books to understand non-fiction. The textbooks support the teaching of mastery.

The government has decided to provide £41m of funding through Maths Hubs to support the development of a maths mastery approach in UK. None of this has been allocated to place the necessary resources in schools. Schools are expected to fund this themselves. Thankfully, we have the most amazing friends association who have agreed to support school to develop the mastery approach by providing funding to purchase resources.

R. Atkinson

For generations it has been acceptable as adults to say that “I’m no good at Maths” but we would never say “I’m no good at reading”. Each generation passes this message on … “never mind … your Dad couldn’t do Maths either” NO! We must not say this. This time children are going to become masters and will have confidence in their use of Maths.

M. A. Loncaster

PUPIL PHOTOGRAPHS Family Night available The school photographer will be visiting again on Tuesday 11th October 2016. Like last year I have decided not to send the request form home. I shall arrange for ALL children to be photographed AND ALSO all siblings to be photographed together. Parents will no longer have to book a photo in advance. I shall however be relying on children knowing if they have a brother or sister in school! I will not take responsibility for children who

deny knowledge of their younger brother or sister! Parents are not obliged to purchase the photographs.

The Family photo session to which anyone can come will be operating from 4:30pm to 7pm on the same date.

This is the ideal opportunity for families to arrange for a group photo including mum, dad and the much loved family pet and an opportunity to catch anyone who may have slipped the net.

A great Christmas Present.

R A SPECIAL MEETING FOR THE PARENTS/CARERS OF THE FOUNDATION STAGE A Reminder

As advertised in the September Newsletter, on Thursday 6th October FY Parents/carers are invited to attend one of two meetings explaining how we go about teaching phonics and number in school. It will give tips on how to help at home and what to expect from the school.

The first meeting will start at 4pm and an identical second meeting will run at 5:30pm.

A creche will be available, but places must be booked and are not available for pre school children.

HEALTH WEEK Mindfulness

This year's Health Week has a focus on looking after our mental and emotional wellbeing rather than our physical health.  Mental wellbeing describes our mental state - how we are feeling and how well we can cope with day-to-day life. Our mental wellbeing

is dynamic. It can change from moment to moment, day to day, month to month or year to year.  If we have good mental wellbeing we are able to:

• feel relatively confident and have good self esteem

• feel and express a range of emotions

• build and maintain good relationships with others

• live and learn productively

• cope with the stresses of daily life

• adapt and manage in times of change and uncertainty

A week full of yoga and meditation will be in store, along with other calming activities to promote mental wellbeing throughout the week.

CONSULTATION EVENINGS Have you returned your form? Booking Forms have been distributed earlier this week Both nights will be in the week immediately before the half-term holiday. I think this gives sufficient time for settling into new

classes while not leaving important issues too long. Remember parent/carers do not have to wait until Consultation Evenings if they have a concern and may seek to contact teachers at 3:30pm via the office or by telephoning the school.

Monday 17th & Thursday 20th October 2016

SPORTING TOURNAMENTS

Hockey is being taught across KS2 this half term and will conclude with Tournaments on Wednesday 19th October 2016. 9am for Y3/Y4 and 1:15pm for Y5/Y6.

Mr. Wood will be delighted to hear from anyone willing to help referee at either tournament.

The tournaments should be a great response to the wonderful Gold Medal won by Team GB’s Women’s Hockey Team

School Meals are Excellent Value.Any Parent/Carer or Grandparent who would like to come to school and enjoy dinner with their children is welcome to do so. Just telephone the office before 10.00 am. on or before the school day* to reserve a meal. Please bring photo I.D. with you. Adult meals cost £3.30. A child’s meal costs £2.30. It is excellent value, and by educating children away from a diet of crisps and processed food we are together building a lifetime of good eating habits and healthy hearts.

DINNERS MUST BE PREPAID, no more than £2.30 will be accepted in arrears. Money must be sent to the classroom in a labelled envelope. PLEASE DO NOT SEND LOOSE MONEY. Each room has a post box through which letters and money (providing it is in a labelled sealed envelope) can be sent to the school office. Meals are advertised on the website and there is always the salad with two wraps option. Children can self serve salad, vegetables and fruit salad and can have second portions.

* Please note; there are occasions e.g at Christmas during the show week, and on sporting tournament days when it is not possible to accommodate extra adult guests at lunchtime. The same applies on the first week in September when the priority is to reestablish systems for our pupils particularly our new starters.

WORLD FOOD WEEK Teaming up with Unilever. From Monday 10th October for one week, which includes the Mega Harvest Buffet, we are going to travel the world in one week at Crofty’s Restaurant. Each menu will include dishes with international sauces provided by Unilever, one of our recommended suppliers. For every meal taken in this week a donation will be made by Unilever for their charity programme supplying meals for hungry children all over the world.

TICKTON PRE SCHOOL GROUP A chance to support a local initiative at Tescos

One of our mums who works at Tickton Pre School has contacted me regarding a chance for them to win £12000.The pre school’s community garden project has been successful in securing funding from the Tesco bags of help

initiative. This means that the organisation faces a public vote in all local Tesco stores between 26th Sept - 9th Oct. As indicated the first place is worth £12000 and the pre school is extremely keen to secure as much funding as possible. The pre school hopes to extend their provision onto the local field to provide their children and the wider

community greater outdoor experiences.

WHO’S WHO Photos on the Website The website has just been updated with photos of the staff at Molescroft Primary School. The photos are arranged in teams. Hopefully you will be able to match the face to the member of staff your children are talking about.

GOOGLE WARNING it has been brought to my attention that if you google Molescroft Primary School there are a number of sites which give the holiday dates for the school.

The dates are often wrong and certainly not to be relied upon. These sites have nothing to do with the school and can be spotted because they are full of advertising. The Molescroft Site will never have adverts attached.

Remember that the school prospectus and the governors’ annual report always contain the holiday dates. In addition the upcoming events on the website will always display the return to school date during a school holiday.

FRIENDS’ DISCOS Time to put on the dancing shoes The next school discos will be split over two separate dates. FY & KS1 Autumn Disco will be held on Thursday 13th October 3:15pm to 4:30pm and the KS2 Disco will be held on Friday 14th October 3:30pm to 5:00pm

The KS1 Autumn Term Disco Cost is £3.00 per ticket as it now includes a hot dog a bag of crisps and unlimited juice. There will be no need to bring any spending money.

The KS2 Autumn Disco costs £2.50 including a bag of crisps and unlimited

juice. Hot dogs will be on sale for £1.00 each and buns will be on sale for 30p each. Please complete the slip on the Friends letter and hand into the Office to book tickets. If anybody can volunteer to help at either disco or bake buns for the KS2 Disco this will be greatly appreciated. Again, please complete the slip. Tickets will remain on sale until the 150 per event are sold.

Please note children are to be collected from their normal 3:30pm exits. This is to avoid the scrum at the hall door. The route onto the site is through the gate off St. Leonard’s Road for Y1 to Y6. Parents of the Foundation Year will be able to access their courtyard from the gate near the front entrance.

Watch out for the FRIENDS DISCO Booking Form

RREADING CHAMPIONS Thank you!

We have had a great start to the year and our Reading Champions week has certainly got the Reading agenda reestablished. I am grateful to Mrs. Lowe for organising the Book fair and to our customers who made orders of over £650. This means that the school already has £320 to spend on the Library. The next stage will be the commission on any sales through the book leaflets and of course from the Sponsored Read. Every penny raised through the Sponsored Read will be spent on new books for the library. We are very excited by the possibilities of this and are most grateful for your support for Reading in school, at home and for the reinvestment in the Library.

HARVEST FESTIVAL A chance to give thanks We are again to hold a special Harvest Festival Assembly on Monday 10th October 2016. I once again invite pupils to bring some gifts of fresh fruit or vegetables to form a display in the hall. A couple of apples or a cabbage for example will be more than acceptable. This will form a visual basis for our thanks for the harvest we so often take for granted. At 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday 12th October 2016 a special market will

be set up on the South Playground where our Y2 children will be selling the produce to parents/carers including home made soup. Prices will be set competitively in comparison with local supermarkets. All money raised will go to this year’s Charity Fund Raising effort (November).

In addition anyone wishing to send tinned or dried food may do so. These items will be sent to the Food Bank for distribution.

AUTUMN PHOTO COMPETITION

To mark the season of ‘mellow fruitfulness’, we are inviting children to send in Autumnal photographs that they have taken. Digital images can be sent to [email protected]

The closing date for entries is 11th November 2016. Prizes will be presented to the winners who capture the beauty of the season. This has produced some fabulous images in the past. Children may enter in school time using iPads by arrangement with Mr. Britton.

SPORTS GOLD Maintaining the Gold Standard For the second year in a row we have been awarded the Gold Standard by the School Games Award. This reflected that in KS2 over 54% of children were engaged in extra curricular sport. In addition over the past year we held nine intra-school sports events including the two regular sports days and associated events in archery, athletics, football, gymnastics, rugby league, swimming, table tennis, tennis and cross-country.We attended inter-school sports events in thirteen different sports including:

archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, netball, orienteering, rounders, rugby league, swimming, cross-country and in sports hall athletics. Some of these sports saw our involvement in multiple competitions. We sent B teams to over five different sports and C teams to two different sports.Over 33% of the pupils are involved in sports leadership and support and we have at least eight links to local sports clubs. As always I am indebted to all the staff, the sports coaches, the leaders of clubs and most important Mr. Wood and Miss Fullam who lead P.E. across the school.

We are Golden!

YEAR 6 BIG SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT AT LONGCROFT – SEPTEMBER 2016

Molescroft’s new Year 6 looked forward with great anticipation to their first competition of the season and battled well in their five games of the event.Under pressure from the kick off in their first game against Cherry Burton, Jack Charles helped out at the back with great defensive covering and cleared well, ably supported by Charlie Lewin. Keeper Sam Davies pulled off a fantastic save but with opposition pressure mounting he was unable to stop the ball going into the net to give Cherry Burton the lead. Despite a great shot from Henry Illingworth going just wide and a last minute surge of pressure, Molescroft were unable to equalise and the 3 points went to Cherry Burton.Swinemoor were their next opponents and again Molescroft came under early pressure. Sam once again saved some cracking shots, clearly a keeper on top form. Edward Cook hit a superb shot but the Swinemoor keeper managed to tip it past the post and with the ball swiftly going to the other end, Swinemoor forced a goal to take the lead. Molescroft fought back, but unfortunately could not get the ball over the line leaving Swinemoor the winners. Getting stronger with each game, Molescroft found St Nicks another tricky side but they fought for every ball, and managed to keep possession for spells of the game. Jack headed the ball clear at the back but a slip up in the defence enabled St Nicks to score the first goal of the game. Edward popped up with another header and then a

wonderful strike, hitting the ball sweetly to equalise for his team. Sadly, a lucky break allowed the opposition to gain a second goal and so win the game 2-1.Tickton came next and Molescroft made a promising early start. Nick Taylor and Will Britt tackled well in midfield, and captain Charlie Edmond slotted a pin point pass through to Hayden Bennett who put Molescroft ahead with a fantastic strike, slamming the ball past the Tickton keeper. A counterattack led to a fantastic save from Sam which kept Molescroft in the lead and gave them their first victory.Final opponents were Leconfield and Molescroft kept them under pressure the whole game. They peppered the goal with chance after chance and Charlie E buried a wonderful shot in the back of the net to score Molescroft’s first of the game. Hayden Todd and Henry chased well and battled hard for the ball giving Leconfield no chance to get possession. Charlie E passed to Will who scored his team’s second goal and this was closely followed by a third, Jack scoring this time and game ended with fine 3-0 victory. With two wins from five games Molescroft did not manage to top the table and go through to the next round this year. However, they all played well and show great promise to be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Well done boys!
