BLUE ANGELS PLUS
MARYLAND FLEET WEEK
Baltimore, MD October 12-14, 2016
This October, Baltimore is holding a new event, Maryland Fleet Week, from October 13-19. As part of that event, the Blue Angels will practice and perform. They will practice from 1-4 pm Thursday, October 13 and Friday, October 14. They will also perform on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16. Maryland Fleet Week is a free event featuring tours of gray naval vessels from a number of countries and possibly some tall ships.
The weekend days will probably be jam packed on land and in the restaurants, as usual for these free events, so I think the best viewing and Baltimore experience will be Wednesday, October 13 and Thursday, October 13. The Patapsco River will be closed to marine traffic before and during the Blue Angels events, so we need to arrive on Wednesday afternoon, October 12 to get there before the harbor is closed. BONUS! The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race starts at the Bay Bridge, mid day October 12, so we can watch that start on the way to Baltimore
While the Inner Harbor East Marina is a great spot, they are under new management and have raised their rates to $3.50/foot for this event. Therefore, I suggest we go to HarborView Marina, on the other side of the harbor, whose rates will be $2.50/foot Wednesday & Thursday, and $3.00/foot Friday, plus $18/day for 30A power. Contact Bill (former manager of Inner Harbor East) or Lisa at 410-752-1122 for reservations, and mention Corinthians when making reservations. I strongly recommend making reservations now, since they will fill up fast as we get into fall. It’s easier to cancel later, with a full refund for cancellations over 48 hours in advance. Please contact John Pasley at 301-879-9774 or [email protected] for information and to help us know who’s coming.

BYOB / Pot-luck Cocktail Party, please bring your favorite hors d’oeuvre and favorite drink. Plastic cups, ice, plates, napkins, and utensils will be provided.
1600 to 1800 Saturday, 29 October 2016
At the Parsons home, on Harrison Cove, 407 Bentley Ave, St Michaels, 21663
If by land: Bentley Avenue is not on the county map, so, we are 1/2 block East of the corner of Radcliffe Ave and Manor St. Park on the shoulders of the adjacent streets. About five feet of the shoulder grass belongs to the county. If you need directions, please call: H 410 745 5507, or Mary Ann’s cell 703 283 5338
If by sea: N 38 47.0, W 076 12.9; on Harrison Cove. Anchor in St. Michaels Harbor or the Miles River. Since high water is at 1649, you can dinghy in to our bulkhead with ladder. The minimum water depth will be greater than 2.5-feet. Keep Harrison Cove Osprey stand (no nest), to your PORT. There is a bad snag East of the Osprey stand.
Please let Mary Ann ([email protected]) know if you plan to attend.
Of special interest, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is hosting the wonderful OysterFest, from 1000 to 1600 at the Museum. Google CBMM for details.
Hope to see you all here on the 29th.

Electronic Navigation
Navigation today involves many electronic systems, including not only GPS and various radios but the Automatic Identification System (AIS) to prevent collisions, electronic chart plotters, and much more. Activities Chairman Dick Marsh will give a presentation about these systems and how to interconnect them to maximize safety on the water. How does one detect and avoid dangers like the tow below? Dick has navigated many offshore races, including a Class D win in the 2011 Marion-Bermuda Race.
This talk will be held at scenic City Island Yacht Club. It will be followed by a dinner hosted by Master’s Mate Larry Mead and featuring the usual Corinthian conviviality.
City Island Nautical Museum
Beforehand, participants may also visit the nearby City Island Nautical Museum, which has splendid artifacts from the age of sail. It also features wonderful pictures of the island’s renowned boatyards and the many famous yachts built there, including America’s Cup defenders. Boo Dennis, who is a trustee of the museum will provide a guided tour.

New York Area Winter Gam Dinner Series 2016‐17 1830 hours ‐ 2nd Wednesday
Nov 9, Dec 14, Jan 11, Feb 8, Mar 8 and Apr 12
These evenings serve as an informal gam for members to enjoy the winter remove from northern sailing and as “meet and greet” for member prospects. Harbormasters and other local marine interests may join us to say a few words. But these evenings are foremost for the sharing of our good company.
Speakers and Corinthian hosts: see latest Jibsheet “Calendar of Events” and/or flyer updates. No registration is required. The courtesy of registering for the event at thecorinthians.org is appreciated. O’Neill’s handles individual tabs quite nicely. O'Neill's Pub & Restaurant, 93 North Main St., Norwalk, CT 06854, Phone: (203) 838‐0222 O’Neill’s has a two level parking garage behind the building. There is a large public parking area a block away. Metro North South Norwalk station is a 10 minute walk away. O’Neill’s is a half mile south of I‐95 exit 15, left off the south bound ramp or right from route 7 exit for museums; if northbound, exit 14, go straight to major intersection at bottom of hill, turn right onto North Main Street. North Main Street has a divider opposite O’Neill’s so south bound traffic must continue to public parking area and turn around.

Sunday, December 4th Cruising Cuba: Forbidden Paradise
In March and April of 2016 Bob and Brenda Osborn spent two months cruising the south coast of Cuba aboard their 47’, 6.5’ draft Aerodyne composite sailboat Pandora. Pandora left the U.S. and traveled south through the Bahamas, the Windward Passage, left Haiti to port and turned west along the south coast of Cuba. They passed Guantanamo naval base and cleared in at Santiago de Cuba, the first port of entry on the SE coast of Cuba. From there they explored the south coast, rounded the western tip of Cuba and headed east to Marina Hemmingway and Havana. They left Marina Hemmingway and cleared in at Ft Lauderdale.
Bob will share how he gained the needed approvals to make the trip along with his personal experience of visiting this country’s largest ports along with its rural villages, none of which have changed since the 50s. Of course, he’ll have plenty to say about those wonderful classic cars too.
