Spring Gam April 10, 2016, 1130-1500 hours

“Sailing Offshore vs. Onshore”

Port Washington Yacht Club 1 Yacht Club Drive

Port Washington, New York 11050 Phone: 516-767-1614

To get us ready for the new season, the program at this gam will address how things change when one sails offshore, rather than closer to shore as most of us usually do. How do things change when one goes over the horizon? What things are different? What things are more challenging—or less so?

Our speakers will be three Corinthians with extensive blue-water experience, both cruising and racing: our Master Leigh Seaver, Juan Corradi, and Anne Kolker. Discussion will follow. We encourage input from other members in the audience who have relevant experience.

The gam will begin with a cocktail hour at 1130, then a lunch with several tasty options at around 1230, and then the program. We should be done by 1500.

PWYC offers a splendid location with fine views of Manhasset Bay. One may get there via the Long Island Railroad from Penn Station to Port Washington. For driving directions, see the club web site at http://www.pwyc.com/default.aspx?p=DynamicModule&pageid=292168&ssid=172573&vnf=1

Cost: $25 per person. Please register on the Corinthian web site.

The Corinthians

SINGLE-HANDED and DOUBLE-HANDED RACE

SINCE 1946

Saturday June 4, 2016 Norwalk Yacht Club Registration via: YachtScoring.com

History

The Corinthians Single-Handed Race has been sailed in western Long Island Sound since 1946 and is open to all yachtsmen. This race is designed to test one's skill at managing the boat and to prove the necessity of having competent crew aboard at all other times. The race is for all single-hulled yachts, at least twenty feet LOA, auxiliary powered, and having a self-bailing cockpit and lifelines. Yachts must be designed, constructed, rigged, and equipped in a manner conducive to safe and comfortable overnight cruising. The Race Committee reserves the right to rule on the eligibility of any yacht. The Single-Handed Division prohibits additional crew and the Double-Handed Division is limited to the skipper and one crew. Both Divisions prohibit the use of spinnakers, gennakers, whisker poles, electric winches, or self-steering devices except to lock the helm while tacking.

Location and Time The race will start in the vicinity of Cable and Anchor Reef R28C Bell due south of Sheffield Island, Norwalk, CT. The registered yacht with the highest PHRF handicap rating will start at 11:00 AM. Subsequent yachts will start based on PHRF handicap rating from highest to lowest in a “pursuit race” format. The length of the course will be from four to twelve nautical miles depending on the weather.

Awards: Prizes will be awarded to the first three boats in each Division. The winner of the Single-Handed Race will also receive a perpetual trophy presented at The Corinthians' annual awards dinner.

Post-Race Party All skippers and their guests are invited to a complimentary post-race party to be held immediately following the race at the Norwalk Yacht Club. Launch service will be provided. Guest moorings will be available with reservations. Please contact Norwalk Yacht Club directly, in advance, at (203) 866-0941 if you would like a mooring. Dock space is available to tie up temporarily for the party.

Entry Fee US Sailing member: $40.00 Non-member: $45.00.

REGISTER VIA: www.YachtScoring.com

YOUR REGISTRATION AND ENTRY FEE MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN Friday, June 3, 2014 @1700 hrs.

Spring Rendezvous Northport, NY

Race Start 1100 hours Saturday, June 18, 2016, Gam aboard 1600 hours

The Spring Rendezvous provides a warm up for the cruising season. A short race from a central

location tests sailing skills. A gam aboard and (optional) dinner ashore will reawaken

provisioning and landing skills. Some will enjoy a morning swim and/or kayak exploration.

Prospective members are welcome by introduction of sponsor.

The center of this screen shot is mid

Sound buoy “32A”, a convenient race

start, south of Stamford. “32A” is

about 12 nm from City Island. From

“32A”, stay north of the government

marks to HBA8 Target Rock, the Finish

mark, about 6 nm ESE of “32A”. It will

take most of us an hour to go from

finish to mooring in Northport. We will

use the start and finish procedure

(honor system) which has been very

successful in recent Corinthian Cruises.

Racers will cross start line during 10

minute start window. This start avoids

the challenges of “running the line” at

start. Racers will take own finish times.

Non-spinnaker only.

Not to be used for Navigation

Following the race there will be a two boat cocktail raft-up on moorings in Northport

Harbor. Look for the Great Flag. Bring an appetizer and beverage. We will have picnic

supplies. We suggest arranging a mooring with Seymour’s (631) 261-6574. They have the

northern moorings and launch service to village. A fine alternative is the mooring field of

the Northport YC (631) 261-7633. By land, go to Seymour’s and tell launch driver you are a

guest on the Corinthian host boat. One would expect the racers to be moored by 1600, as a

guide to those joining the rendezvous without the race. Northport is a lovely village to walk,

with many restaurants. We will choose a restaurant nearer the time for those coming by land.

Please register online whether racing or not. Sponsor must register prospective members.

Sailing Instructions will be posted online. Race qualifies for Corinthian Spring/Fall Rendezvous

trophy.

Fellow Corinthians,

The Little Ship Club has invited Corinthians to join them in cruising the Channel Islands off the coast of France in July 2016. Yesterday was the deadline for registering and paying the deposit, and many of you have responded. However, a few berths remain available, and we have been given a brief extension. If you are interested in joining the cruise, but have not yet registered, please do it now. Paul Banks ([email protected]) of the LSC sent the following guidance.

Debbie Wheeler is co-ordinating that allocation of berths to all those taking part in the cruise. If your members have any questions about the booking arrangements, they can contact Debbie ([email protected]), but they can also book directly through the LSC website. The website link is http://www.littleshipclub.co.uk/events/channel-islands-cruise-2016-corinthians Corinthians need to register on our website on their first visit and thereafter they will be able to book and view information about the cruise.

Our relationship with the LSC is one of the great benefits of being a Corinthian. I encourage all who are interested to have a look at the cruise itinerary on the LSC website and to register promptly.

Best regards, Leigh Seaver Master

Eastward ho! To Maine our 2016 annual cruise will go to down east Maine! The cruise details have been finalized and the Registration about to be posted. The Corinthians are the proud sponsor of Acadia National Park’s Centennial, one of the first parks under the supervision of Stephen Mather, the first National Park Superintendent for President Woodrow Wilson, who officially created the National Park System consummating the planning of our nation’s great naturalist and conservation list, President Theodore Roosevelt. Our fleet will assemble July 30 on the spectacular waters and vistas of Mount Desert Island in Southwest Harbor at the Hinckley Boat Yard. The cruise will end only three miles north seven days later in Northeast Harbor with a wind up dinner at the Asticou Inn overlooking the picturesque harbor to the south. In between we will visit two yacht clubs along the way never visited by our club, Winter Harbor and Kollegewidgwok in Blue Hill (KYC for those less intrepid at pronunciation). In Blue Hill, we will hear the cacophony of 55 steel drums and timpani playing Star Wars on the town green! In Somes Sound we will escort up to 12 windjammers in parade as they enter the Sound and make a turn at our anchorage three miles north where we will lay over two days.

Established in 1783 by Loyalists from Castine, Maine, St. Andrews is one of New Brunswick’s oldest and most distinctive settlements. The original plat, now the nucleus of the modern town, is

a neat rectangle half a mile deep and a mile long, laid out on a south facing hillside that slopes gently toward the harbor. It is a classic example of colonial town planning. The broad, straight streets form a regular grid, broken at intervals by open squares for public buildings and a market place. Most street names have royal or colonial associations.

For those who have who register, information on Canadian customs clearance and reentry back into the United States will be provided.

With no formal events the five day feeder is dutch treat. The informal schedule is as follows and may be subject to change in order to allow the feeder vessels to be back in Southwest Harbor by noon, July 30:

July 26: We will pick up moorings in St. Andrews’ spacious harbor on Tuesday, Anchoring is not possible due to the 29 foot tides. There is no launch service to the town dock so your dinghy is a must. The Corinthians have arranged for moorings and/or rafting for up to 9 boats.

July 27: Visit the sites of the colonial town, the beautiful Kingsbrae Gardens and the Fundy Museum. Dinner may be had at the spacious Algonquin Hotel and Resort which resides over the town.

July 28:We will start our journey back west for a stopover at Campobello Island’s Head Harbor where dock space has been arranged. Dinner for the evening will be at the Fireside Restaurant in President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s summer home at The Roosevelt Campobello International Park. Van service has been arranged for the short 5 mile drive down to the Park.

July 29: It is a 40 mile cruise back west to our next stopover…Roque Island. Here a swim might be in order on the island’s spacious beach. Make sure you are fully provisioned as there are no amenities ashore!

July 30. The feeder cruise wraps up with another 40 mile sail to Southwest Harbor for the start of the main cruise.

Fall Rendezvous Ziegler’s Cove, Darien, Ct

Race Start 1100 hours Saturday, October 1, 2016, Gam aboard 1600 hours

The Fall Rendezvous serves as a fond farewell to the northern sailing season. Early fall brings

shorter days, more reliable wind, the beginning of fall color and the beautiful quality of light at

this season. Those seeking a good excuse for a sail will find the course agreeable, and the finish

near a wonderful little cove with the Corinthian power fleet waiting to greet the sailors.

Ziegler’s Cove is well suited to kayaking and swimming. Prospective members are welcome by

introduction of sponsor.

Start is mid Sound buoy “32A”, south

of Stamford. “32A” is shown on

western edge of image to the left.

Stay north of the government marks to

HBA8 Target Rock then north to

Green’s Ledge Light. Course rhumb

line distance is about 12.5 nm. “32A”

is about 12 nm from City Island. We

will use the start and finish procedure

(honor system) which has been very

successful in recent Corinthian Cruises.

Racers will cross start line during 10

minute start window. This start avoids

the challenges of “running the line” at

start. Committee Boat is optional.

Racers will take own finish times.

Non-spinnaker only.

Not to be used for Navigation

Following the race there will be a cocktail raft-up on the day moorings in Ziegler’s Cove,

Darien, CT about 1.5 nm northwest of the finish. One would expect the racers to be

moored by 1600, as a guide to those joining the rendezvous without the race. Bring an

appetizer and beverage. We will have picnic supplies.

Please register online whether racing or not. Sponsor must register prospective members.

Race qualifies for Corinthian Spring/Fall Rendezvous trophy. Sailing Instructions will be posted

online. There is no direct public access to Ziegler’s Cove by land. By land, drive alongs must

contact Dick Marsh in advance to arrange 2.5 nm shuttle service by boat from Five Mile River

Rowayton or Darien. Or post for a berth!

BLUE ANGELS PLUS

MARYLAND FLEET WEEK

Baltimore, MD October 12-14, 2016

This October, Baltimore is holding a new event, Maryland Fleet Week, from October 13-19. As part of that event, the Blue Angels will practice and perform. They will practice from 1-4 pm Thursday, October 13 and Friday, October 14. They will also perform on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16. Maryland Fleet Week is a free event featuring tours of gray naval vessels from a number of countries and possibly some tall ships.

The weekend days will probably be jam packed on land and in the restaurants, as usual for these free events, so I think the best viewing and Baltimore experience will be Wednesday, October 13 and Thursday, October 13. The Patapsco River will be closed to marine traffic before and during the Blue Angels events, so we need to arrive on Wednesday afternoon, October 12 to get there before the harbor is closed. BONUS! The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race starts at the Bay Bridge, mid day October 12, so we can watch that start on the way to Baltimore

While the Inner Harbor East Marina is a great spot, they are under new management and have raised their rates to $3.50/foot for this event. Therefore, I suggest we go to HarborView Marina, on the other side of the harbor, whose rates will be $2.50/foot Wednesday & Thursday, and $3.00/foot Friday, plus $18/day for 30A power. Contact Bill (former manager of Inner Harbor East) or Lisa at 410-752-1122 for reservations, and mention Corinthians when making reservations. I strongly recommend making reservations now, since they will fill up fast as we get into fall. It’s easier to cancel later, with a full refund for cancellations over 48 hours in advance. Please contact John Pasley at 301-879-9774 or [email protected] for information and to help us know who’s coming.
