From the editorial department… The editorial department will be undergoing some remodeling during the next couple of months. With the mailing of this issue, I
will be retiring from the day-to-day of Growl editing and passing the baton to Allan Ellis. Allan will do a WAY better job of this than
I ever did. For instance, Allan will take the time to actually proof his work, spell correctly and get people’s names right. It’s bitter
sweet for me. I’ve enjoyed being the Growl editor for these few years. It’s fun being the mouthpiece for an entire group of people.
I’ve always felt genuine appreciation from other club members. It may have helped that my policy of “If you complain about it,
you’re now in charge of it.” has been in full force the entire time.
The newsletter only has to perform a few necessary functions. It serves as the communication portal for the club. The newsletter
is how we generally know about the next meeting or event. Time, place, date… that sort of thing. It is also the point of contact for
the officers and board members. Finally, it serves as a sort of advertisement for the club. By looking at an issue, prospective fu-
ture members can see what the events are like and get an idea of what we’re all about. So it doesn't need to
be glossy and fancy. It just needs to get the job done. Come to think of it, that could be the summation of my
tenure as editor. “He wasn’t glossy or fancy but he got the job done”.
I’ve always tried to follow a few general rules here. The most basic rule is: Only publish what I would want to
read. Some others: I don’t write about the weather; I always put a picture of a Jaguar on the cover. Every
issue. Without fail. We are a car club. Some of us even lean toward obsessiveness. The newsletter should
be about cars; Also, I don’t print pictures or articles about cars that aren’t Jaguars. We are a Jaguar car club.
I’ve broken that one a few times but still haven't put any Morgans in here.
I am looking forward to a newsletter edited by Allan. He is a longtime friend and true enthusiast. He can
speak “Jaguar” with anyone and hold his own whether the topic is torque specs or auction results.
Thanks very much for reading. The Humble Scribe
JUST SAY’N Here it is, time for another issue of the GROWL and I hadn’t quite gotten over my pain from the last one. There were eight pictures from the All British Car Show and they didn’t even get the Morgans in the background of one of them. We are coming to the end of another good year for JAGSL, culminated with a great Concours that sure wasn’t looking good going into show day, for either the turn-out or the weather. But we managed to have a dry one followed by an excellent banquet at Bishop’s Post. Lisa Hendrix and her committee deserve a “standing o”. We will finish up the year with the Annual Business Meeting at Plaza Jaguar on Saturday, November
15, at 6:00pm. The actual meeting will start around 7:00pm, finishing up with the election of officers and board members. We will also be discussing the events for next year. There has been some talk about a longer drive including an overnight stay. Several of the other clubs do this annually with good turn-outs. 2015 will start with the Dinner at Deer Creek Club on January 10. This continues to be a very popular event. Invitations will be going out in early December. As you can tell, I don’t have very much to say, except to recite the calendar, so I’m going to stop the rambling at this point.

JAGSL CONCOURS d’ELAGANCE
2014 Jaguars at the Kemp Auto Museum”
This year’s Concours d’Elegance was held on October 11th at the Kemp Auto Museum for the fourth consecutive ear. The
weather forecasts were ominous - heavy rains, thunderstorms all weeklong and into the Concours weekend! Weather alerts were constant - flash flooding, severe thunderstorms & lightning strikes. But, by Friday morning the forecast was changed to just a chance of showers for Concours day. By Friday evening the forecast was for the rain to move out of the St. Louis area by midnight, but two more storm fronts were tracking on their way. Somehow one storm front went North of St. Louis and the other diverted south. No rain overnight left the roadways dry, the air cool and fairly sunny. “Behind every cloud is a silver lining” --- because of all the previous rain the Jags when cleaned required no constant dusting -there was no dust around! AND, if you have sinus allergies - NO POLLEN - just cool clean air to breath! Another GREAT JAGSL CONCOURS!!! The weekend started with the registration and cocktail party hosted by Plaza Jaguar of St. Louis on Friday evening at EdgeWild Restaurant & Winery near the host hotel. Everyone enjoyed drinks (cash bar), flatbread pizzas and drummettes while catching up with old friends. The featured host hotel was the Drury Plaza Chesterfield. Those staying at the Drury were pleased with the complimentary breakfast & happy hour and the close proximity to the Kemp and Bishop‘s Post, the awards dinner restaurant. The Kemp Auto Museum displays historically significant and artistically inspired automobiles. The Kemp collection includes 40+ rare and vintage European au-tomobiles from the turn of the century to modern day. The Museum Plaza served as the show venue. On the plaza were 48 vintage and classic Jaguars - 22 were judged in JCNA Championship Division and 16 in Driven Division and 10 additional cars were on Display. Also on display were 4 new Jaguars (2014 XJR, XF, F-Type OTS and a 2015 F-Type Coupe) provided by Plaza Jaguar St. Louis. The ages of the other cars ranged from a 1930 Austin 7 Swallow OTS to a 2004 XJ8. The participants represented 6 Jag clubs: Jaguar Association of Greater St. Louis Illinois Jaguar Club Jaguar Association of Greater Indiana MAL - Canada Jaguar Club of Central Ohio Jaguar Affiliate Group of Michigan
Article by Ray & Dorothy Unger Photos by Jim Hendrix, Ray Unger, Allan Ellis, John Testrake
Chief Judge Jim Hendrix carried out the job of ensuring that every class had judges and the judges were all trained and qualified. Behind the scenes were the tabulators who looked over every score sheet for errors and tallied the final scores. It is an extremely important job and those who do it rarely get the appreciation they deserve. This year the head tabulator was again Dorothy Unger, ably assisted by tabulators: Judy Beer, Terry Carmack, Madeline (Terry’s granddaughter) and Kate & Don Williams. Brandon Hibbs served as score sheet runner with others pitching in to bring the completed judging team score sheets quickly to the tabulation room. John Testrake and Ben Hendrix, the site preparation subcommittee, did a wonderful job in laying out the show field. Every square foot of the plaza was graced with the presence of a beautiful car. The late arrivals were greeted with a daunting site in trying to navigate the lines of cars, tents and cleaning supplies, but John and Ben did a great job of guiding or even driv-ing some of these cars into their assigned spot. The elevated patio of the Kemp Museum entrance showcased the new cars provided by Plaza Jaguar St. Louis. Our banquet dinner was held at Bishop’s Post Restaurant with the dining area in a separate dining room and the adjoining covered patio. Both areas looked out on the lighted hillside garden with a waterfall. A see-through curtain was dropped to protect diners from the cooler temperatures yet allowing for view of the lighted garden. Cocktails beginning at 6:00 p.m. provided an opportunity for everyone to relax and visit with the other attendees, as well as view the Silent Auction items set up to raise funds for our charity. Everyone had their choice of salad, entrée and dessert once seated. After dinner Lisa Hendrix started the program by introducing Russell Gammon. Mr. Gammon is a third generation Zimba-bwean and has been a Professional Guide for over 25 years, conducting safaris throughout Southern and Eastern Africa. He is a passionate conservationist, who delights in sharing his deep understanding of the African continent. Mr. Gammon generously donated his time for speaking as well as the donation of a very large print of a beautiful African Leopard (Jaguar) for the auction. Among the silent auction items were several enlarged photos and note cards taken by Jeri Herold (JAGSL member) while she and husband Bob were on a recent family photo safari in Kenya. The money raised by the silent auction items was donated to the “St. Louis Zoo’s support of the Center for Conservation for the Horn of Africa.” With a laptop pro-jector, everyone enjoyed seeing photos of Africa and animals from his guided tours as Mr. Gammon spoke about life and conservation in eastern and southern Africa. (As a result of the silent auction, JAGSL raised $1,000 which was matched by Phil Taxman and Merrill Lynch.) After the presentation, Lisa introduced Jim Allmeroth, Manager of Plaza Jaguar St. Louis, and thanked him for bringing the new Jaguars for the Concours and sponsoring the cocktail party on Friday night. In appre-ciation, Jim Allmeroth was presented with a bottle of wine. Special awards of bottles of wine were then presented: the Far-thest Trailered went to Julien Brosseau, who came 800 miles from Toronto, Ontario, Canada; the Bravest Entrant went to John Stremsterfer, who drove from Michigan; and the Cat Bite Award went to Ron Henry. Ron Henry’s 1966 MK10 made it to the venue parking place where it “died.” As we all know, “cats” have 9 lives! An autopsy performed by Club members Bonjour and Andre Stunson (owners of LeStable Service and Restorations) identified the dead battery attributed to a de-ceased alternator. The battery was resuscitated by Kemp Museum technicians with the aid of a battery charger. Ron’s cat collected a 1
st place in Driven Class and later made it back home safely!
Co-chief Judges, Jim Hendrix and John Testrake, then made the presentations of the awards for each Concours class. Each class of entrants were called to the podium as a group with the appropriate trophies presented in ascending order. Of the 38 cars judged, our show had 4 perfect scores: 100 points in Championship Class: Hildo & Dora Hoogcarspel - 2008 VDP - Illinois Jaguar Club Scott & Debbie Holley - 1956 XK 140M OTS - JAG Assoc. of Greater Indiana Terry Love - 1974 XKE OTS - Illinois Jaguar Club 10 Points in Driven Class: John & Katy Schindler - 1971 E-Type Ser 3, 2+ 2, Jaguar Club of Ohio The chairmen wish to thank all the people who came together to make our show a success. In addition to the Concours committee, we must include the judges (several of whom made the trip from other clubs), the tabulators and the staffs at the Drury Plaza Chesterfield and the Kemp Auto Museum. And most of all, thanks to all of you who brought your beautiful classic Jaguars to be shown and enjoyed by everyone! A Mark X you’ve likely not seen before. Just in and for sale locally is this interesting 1966 Mk X. The website doesn’t specifically list the mods done but a quick glance at the pictures brings out a few big ones. Caution: if you’re a hard-core purist, now might be the time to look away. The suspension looks to be lowered a bit and I’m guessing those wheels and tires are 17 inches. Tinted win-dows somehow seem to work on this black behemoth. Paint and body-work look very good from the photos as does the restored interior. What’s the best part of a Mk X? Perhaps it’s the E-Type spec 4.2 litre XK twincam running on polished triple SUs? This one however, has an AJ6 supercharged 6 cylinder from a much later model XJR complete with J-Gate shifter. That should give it some hustle. $52,500 at Hyman Ltd. http://hymanltd.com/vehicles/5298-1966-jaguar-mkx-sedan/
