Mother Judge (aka Caroline Isach-sen) came to Albany in 1986. Thedaughter of music-loving parents, shegrew up playing piano and singing inthe choir, but it was Harry Chapinthat first put stars in her eyes. Thewhole storytelling song structure ap-pealed to me, she says. After theshow, she went home and composedher first song. It wasnt that great,but I wrote it out, and finished it and

worked out the music forit. (Metroland, vol. 25, no. 15)

In addition to The Language of Houses, Alison Lurie is the author of 10 novels, including Foreign A f-fairs (Pulitzer Prize, 1985) and The Truth About Lorin Jones(Prix Femina Etranger, 1989) and Truthand Consequences, 2005. She has received numerous honors including Guggenheim and RockefellerFoundation grants, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Fiction, and a D. Litt. from Ox-ford University. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the American Acad-

emy of Arts and Sciences. Lurie has taught literature, folklore, humor, and writing at Cornell Universitysince 1969 and is now the Frederic J. Whiton Professor of American Literature emerita.

Join us for a special Meet the Author Reception on Monday, October 20th from 6 -8 p.m. The event is open to the publicand presented by the University Club Foundation with the Preservation League of New York State; Historic AlbanyFoundation; and the Society of Architectural Historians, Turpin Bannister Chapter.
