The Marble Bar Youth Camp 2014 consisted of Marble Bar Recreation Officer Richard Smith and CRC Co-ordinator Kim Mackay taking four youth from the town of Marble Bar on a two
night camping trip at Carawine Gorge. The camp went very well and the youth enjoyed themselves immensely. They tried some
edible plants of the region and spent the nights learning about the different stars. The youth learnt many valuable talents on the camp including how to set up a swag, how to season a
camp oven and how to cook on the open fire. The rest of the time they spent swimming, fishing and chatting away about life and different things they find funny.
In the words of Chaddron Kiernan (a participant of the camp), “It was a good camp that Dylan, Trekyle, Cornell and I had a lot of fun on, we had fish for lunch and I think that was the best
camp that I have been on with different people.” In the last month the SOEP has enabled the Marble Bar youth to experience an art workshop with SOEP Artist in Residence Hannah Quinlivan, a Japanese Day, a two day music workshop with Tom Fisher and the Layabouts & the Bridget Turner Duo, film nights on the Civic Centre
lawn and a Buzz Dance Theatre workshop based on the children’s book ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ by Giles Andreae.

Recipes of the month Pumpkin & Apple Soup
Ingredients 3 teaspoons olive oil 1 onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger 750g butternut pumpkin, peeled and thinly sliced 500g green apples, peeled and thinly sliced 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves 1½ teaspoons chilli powder Salt 3 cups chicken stock 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, chopped Method Heat the oil in a large saucepan over moderate heat. Add the onion, garlic and ginger, and cook for 5 minutes or until the onion is soft. Add the pumpkin and cook for a further 5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Add the apples, thyme leaves, chilli powder and salt to taste, stirring to coat. Add the stock and 1½ cups water, and bring to the boil. Reduce to a simmer, partially cover, then cook for 30 minutes or until the pumpkin is very tender. Transfer to a food processor and purée. If necessary, gently reheat. Serve sprinkled with fresh thyme.
Jelly Cheesecake
Ingredients 1 pkt (90g) lemonade jelly crystals 1.5L (6 cups) boiling water 1 pkt (90g) creaming soda jelly crystals 1 pkt (90g) lemon jelly crystals 300g shredded wheat biscuits 150g butter, melted 500g cream cheese, at room temperature 395g can sweetened condensed milk 60ml (1/4 cup) boiling water, extra 3 tsp powdered gelatine Method Place lemonade jelly crystals in a heatproof jug. Pour over 500ml (2 cups) of the boiling water and stir until jelly dissolves. Transfer to a small plastic container. Repeat with remaining jelly crystals and remaining water. Place in the fridge for 8 hours or overnight to set. Grease base and side of a 20cm (base measurement) round springform pan and line with baking paper. Process biscuits in a food processor until finely crushed. Add butter and process to combine. Use a straight-sided glass to press mix-ture firmly over base and side of pan. Place in fridge for 30 minutes to chill. Process the cream cheese and condensed milk in a clean food processor until smooth. Place the extra boiling water in a heatproof bowl and sprinkle with the gelatin. Stir until gelatin dissolves. Add to the cream cheese mixture and process until well combined. Transfer jelly to a clean work surface. Cut into 2cm cubes. Arrange one-quarter of the jelly over the biscuit base. Pour over one-third of the cream cheese mixture. Continue layering with remaining jelly and cream cheese mixture. Arrange remaining jelly over the top. Place in the fridge for 6 hours to set

On Friday the 12th of September a Blue Light Disco was held at the Civic Centre.
It was the first Disco held in 2014 and was free entry. Ash Bamford pumped out the tunes and the kids (and some of the adults) danced the night away. Prizes for Limbo, Musical Bobs and Best Dancer were awarded on the night but my personal favourite was the brutal game of Musical Chairs.
Without volunteers, events such as the Blue Light Disco are difficult to make
happen and with the help of parents and the community we hope to hold
more, offer refreshments and create a fun and safe environment for the
benefit of the children.
