Greater Mission Bend Area Council (GMBAC) held its !rst Back to School event, August 16, 2014. The GMBAC provided school supplies to nearly 200 students in both Alief and Fort Bend ISDs from grades Pre-K to 8th grades. The event attributes its success to community volunteers, local business donors, the Community Volunteer Fire Department, and the New Life Baptist Church. Working together we helped prepare students for a good start to the new school year.

The GMBAC is focused on increasing visibility and socializing the importance of building community relationships. Addressing Mission Bend’s youngest citizens and their education is a great start. Want to know more about GMBAC? Check out their website at www.gmbac.com

According to Deed Restrictions homeowners are allowed only two garage sales per calendar year. If you post signs around the neighborhood to advertise a garage sale be sure to pick up the signs when it is over. Leaving outdated signs posted in public areas detracts from the neighborhood and eventually leads to litter along our streets.

Do not post garage sale signs, for sale signs, lost pet signs, etc. on public property. Posting signs on government property such as stop signs, telephone and utility posts is illegal and you can be !ned up to $50. In Ft. Bend and Harris Counties, posting bandit signs that obstructs the view of tra"c or in public rights-of-way is a Class “C” misdemeanor that can result in civil suits ranging from $500 - $1000 per violation. Report the misuse of bandit signs to your respective Constable or County Attorney’s O!ces.

Stray Dogs: Please safely secure your pets so they do not freely roam the neighborhood. Stray dogs are a nuisance and potential danger. To report stray dogs call Harris County Animal Control at 281.999.3191 or Fort Bend Animal Services at 281.342.1512

Lawn Maintenance is a critical component to the aesthetics of our neighborhood. It contributes to our home values and helps set standards for new residents. Let’s keep our lawns maintained out of respect to our neighbors and to the value of our community.

Street Lights To report street light outages call CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222 or online @ www.centerpointenergy.com/outage. Please have the pole number that is located on the pole and the nearest street address. Once reported, it will take about 10 – 15 business days to be repaired.

Hurricane Season usually peaks in September and October. Below are hurricane tips to help you prepare. The Federal Railroad Administration and the Texas Department of Transportation have begun work on an environmental impact statement for the Texas Central Railway, a 240-mile high-speed rail system between Houston and Dallas.

Robert Eckels, president of Texas Central Railway, said the FRA and TxDOT issued a notice of intent June

25 to begin the environmental study. Three routes are being considered for the train, including rights of way along I-45, north along Hwy. 249 through Tomball and along a Union Paci!c path along Hwy. 290. Stops are being considered near Bryan College Station and possibly along Beltway 8 or the Grand Parkway.

Depending on how long the environmental process takes, Eckels said the project could break ground by the end of 2016 or early in 2017.
