The summer break is over and as we move toward our fall reunion I look forward to meeting and working with all of you as we move toward our upcoming activities. This is not to say that the summer was without activity. In July, the officers and their ladies traveled to Seven Springs in western Pa. to attend the Council of Deliberation. This event was concluded by the presentation of M.S.A. awards to Ill. Donald L. Loos 33rd and David Dixon 32rd. It was also announced that William Quinn 32° and Robert Chambers 32°were nominated to receive the M.S.A. award in 2014 at Hershey Council of Deliberation. Congratulations to all of the Brothers. It was encouraging to see a very good turnout for the workers picnic on July 18th in the Cathedral banquet room. Many of the Brethren that were invited chose not to attend for one reason or another and you should be made aware that this is a very nice affair. Better yet, it is a great time to meet and make friends with many of the Brothers that you may not have come in contact with. When you receive your invitation next year, give this some serious consideration to attend. The Family picnic held August 1st at the Leiderkrantz was attended by over 180 members and their families. There were games for the children, bingo for anyone who cared to play, and of course all the ice cream, pretzels, and peanuts you could possibly consume. The Moon Bounce was a once again a hit with the children. How kids can bounce up and down for hours is hard to understand. I suppose this would come under, “a sign of my age”. On August 11th the Illustrious Brethren traveled to Supreme Council in Washington D.C. to witness Robert J. Hoyes and Robert C. Engleman receive their 33° degree. At this Council it was announced that Carl F. Berger, a Past Sovereign Prince, and Thomas Gamon, IV, a Past Thrice Potent Master were nominated to receive their 33° in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2015. Congratulations to those Brothers. As you can see it was a busy summer for many of us. As we move into rehearsals and the fall reunion, I hope to see many of you on these occasions. Remember, PETITIONS – PETIONS- PETITIONS. We all know Blue lodge members that will make excellent Scottish Rite Members. Sign them up. Bring a Brother with you on reunion day.

The Commander-in-Chief

Ill. William H. Tennant, Jr., 33°

Brethren, as we approach our first Stated Meeting of AASR at our beautiful temple, please remember that the Fall Reunion is just around the corner.

Even though you may not be an officer or in the line of the several bodies within the Scottish Rite, you can still participate in the reunion.

The Degrees being exemplified can always use new blood, the stage crew can always use help and, in general, we are always happy to see members take part in Temple activities.

As the incoming Thrice Potent Master, I am excited to see a tremendous turnout for our first meeting on Tuesday, October 22.

Help me and the other incoming officers of all the Scottish Rite Bodies to celebrate this new year by attending this meeting.

Sincerely & Fraternally, Andy

By the time you receive this notice autumn will be upon us. From the vantage point of late summer, October should prove to be a busy and exciting month---both ritually and socially. On Saturday, October 19th the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection is holding its Fall Reunion, an inspiring event always worth attending. On October 22nd the first stated meeting of the new Masonic year takes place. In October, preparations for the upcoming Fall Reunion will be well underway. October is also the month for two important and enjoyable County Club events: the Ontelaunee Club’s Pancake and Sausage Dinner (October 7th) and the Pagoda Club’s Movie Night (October 19th). Relatively new to the Valley or Reading and in this writer’s opinion, the high point of the month-- at least socially, will be the Feast of Tishri on October 4th. This dinner is a Black Tie affair probably better known to members of the Southern Jurisdiction. It is an ancient feast of thanksgiving that fosters the sharing of the fraternal fellowship so vital to the existence and growth of our Rite. It is strongly hoped that this event will become a standard part of the Masonic Year. Once again I urge you to take advantage of the opportunities to participate in the Valley’s activities during the month of October. If you do not, the only one to lose is You!!!

Sovereign Prince Speaks Stephen R. Higgins

The Fall season reminds us of the cycle of life as the old gives way to make possible the rebirth of the new in the spring.

We also have our cycle of life. So also in Freemasonry does the old give way for the rebirth of the new. It is beyond our power to stop the passing of the old, however we have two opportunities a year to generate rebirth of the new, they called our reunions.

The future of Freemasonry and of the Scottish Rite is membership. Without new members we will join many other species since the creation of time that could not reproduce and became extinct. Fortunately for us the Great Architect has given us the ability to control our own destiny.

It is up to us, we have the tools and we have the ability. First, we must inform all those good men who should be good Masons, of what they are missing and get them into a Blue Lodge. Secondly, we must inform all those good Masons of what they are missing by not being a member of a Valley of Reading. Make it your goal to bring a candidate into the Valley of Reading at this Fall’s reunion. Keep the Masonic cycle of life going.

Congratulations Ill. Brother Robert J. Hoyes and Ill. Brother Robert C. Engleman on being coroneted 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Masons, in Washington D.C. this past August.

Congratulations to Ill. Brother L. Donald Loos and Brother David J. Dickson for receiving the Meritorious Services Award in Somerset this past July.

Congratulations to Brother Carl F. Berger and Brother Thomas Gamon IV for being nominated to receive the 33rd Degree in Indianapolis in 2015.

Congratulations to Brothers Robert Chambers and William A. (Bill) Quinn for being nominated to receive the Meritorious Services Award in Hershey in July 2014. To each of these Brothers, thank you for your many years of service to Freemasonry and to the Valley of Reading.

I hope everyone had a great summer and that you are now fully engaged in the Valley’s Fall activities. I look forward to sharing fellowship with all of you at our rehearsals and other Valley activities this Fall.

THE MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD The Meritorious Service Award is recognition of distinguished service of a Masonic character granted to those members of the Rite who have given years of active, capable, and faithful service to their Valley. It is authorized by the Supreme Council and given upon the recommendation of the presiding officers of the subordinate bodies to their Council of Deliberation. It is the highest honor that a Council of Deliberation is authorized to confer. At the 142nd Convocation of the Pennsylvania Council of Deliberation held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort on July 13, 2013, Brothers David J. Dickson, and L. Donald Loos, Jr, 33°, received the Scottish Rite Meritorious Service Award. Brother Dickson was raised a Master Mason in Reading Lodge No. 549 and was Knighted a Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret on April 29, 2000. He is a Past Sovereign Prince and at Reunions works both on stage and with the Reception Committee. Dave is also active with the York Rite of Freemasonry. Illustrious Brother Loos was raised a Master Mason in Williamson Lodge No. 307 and is a Past Master. He was Knighted a Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret on November 24, 1974 and was Coroneted a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, 33°, Honorary Member of the Scottish Rite Supreme Council on September 26, 2000, at Pittsburgh, PA. Don is also a Past Sovereign Prince and a Past Commander-in-Chief. Don is very active with Rajah Shrine.

The Valley of Reading is proud to have Dave and Don as its members.

Membership I am what I am today because of the choices I made yesterday. All of us have made good and bad decisions in our lives. Each choice has determined, in some way the rest of our life. Close to three decades ago when I made the choice to become a Freemason, and close to a quarter a century ago when I made the choice to become a Scottish Rite Mason, little did I know what an impact it would have on my life. My life has been much richer with the fraternal fellowship of my Brothers. I have had the opportunity to meet, know, work with and fellowship with some of the best men in Pennsylvania and around the world, all because of that choice I made many years ago. I had a mentor, who gave me a Friend to Friend. He gave me a petition and was my first line signer. He put me in a chair the night I was raised and started me on my path to become Master of the Lodge. He introduced me to the Scottish Rite and signed my petition. He took me to the reunion and introduced me to the officers and Brothers. Without him I would not have had the choice to make. How many good men do you know who are not Masons? How many Masons do you know that are not Scottish Rite Masons? They do not know about the fellowship and Brotherhood they are missing. They may be looking for an opportunity to associate with good men in a common cause. All they need is you to tell them about all the rewarding times of fun, fraternity and fellowship you have experienced in Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite. Ask them if they would like to participate and give them a petition. Bring them to the reunion and introduce them to the rest of the Brothers. Mentor them and help them get involved. Let’s promote Freemasonry and the Valley to our family and friends. We have a great time in Freemasonry and in the Scottish Rite, let’s not hide it.

Scottish Rite Core Values: Reverence for God, Integrity, Justice, Tolerance, Devotion to Country and Service to Humanity.

Scottish Rite – Valley of Reading – THE FRATERNITY OF CHOICE. See you at the reunion! Harry E. Hackman, Jr. 33° Membership Chairman e-mail: [email protected]
