Welcome to the October edition of Loddon Valley Link. The holiday period is now well and truly over and this is a busy edition, with the run-up to Christmas well under way. The central feature this month is a report on the Sherfield Show. The news page from Sherfield Park has an update on the planning application for development in Dixon Road.

Thanks to Paul Newberry and James Russell for the cover photos. There’s a story behind them - see p. 35 for further details.

We are very grateful to our army of volunteers who distribute Loddon Valley Link, and they will receive an invitation to the annual thank-you tea party, to be held in the Village Hall on 12th November.

Pastoral Letter - The Thorn Bush

I once read a parable long ago that summarises what St. Paul writes in his letter to the Philippians (Phil.4.11) “…..for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances” .

The parable goes something like this - “there was a thorn bush in the wilderness, high up in the mountains, surrounded by rocks and sand where the sun beat down mercilessly by day and the freezing winds tore through the branches at night. The thorns on the branches were long and sharp, so no birds would build a nest or even perch to sing a song. It never rained, and no one ever came to visit to prune the branches or water the roots. The thorn bush thought: if only I were like a cedar of Lebanon, tall and green and handsome, well looked after and useful to man, or like a vine, cared for and nurtured for a harvest of grapes, or an oak that can give shade to a shepherd and his sheep. If only I were in Pharaoh’s garden, tendered by his servants.

One day, when the thorn bush was feeling particularly sorry for himself, Moses appeared while tendering his father-in-law’s flock. Suddenly the bush turned bright as though on fire, but it did not burn. God dwelt in the bush and spoke to Moses, commanding him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. God declared the ground holy, and told Moses to remove his sandals.”

How did the thorn bush feel now? God had chosen the thorn bush to reveal Himself to Moses and command him to lead his people out of captivity. God works through ordinary people, just as Jesus does. When we feel low, or sorry for ourselves, or envious, think of the thorn bush. God is only a prayer away. He sent his son to connect with us, and through Jesus we can be thankful for all we have been given. Can we be content whatever our circumstances?

Age Concern - a new Village Agent for Sherfield on Loddon

Glen has just been appointed Age Concern Hampshire (ACH)’s Village Agent volunteer for Sherfield. ACH co-ordinates the Village Agent service for older people in rural areas. Funded by Hampshire County Council, it provides information on services which will help older people to live independently in their own homes for longer.

Her role is not to compete against other agencies but to highlight need. She has been trained by Age Concern Hampshire and also by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, so that she will soon be able to offer free basic home fire safety checks for older people.

ACH is looking for a ‘buddy’ to work alongside Glen. If you would like to find out more or apply for the role, contact the Village Agent co-ordinator.

We have lots more interesting speakers planned for the rest of 2014. At the October meeting Kevin Hughes will tell us about gardening with bulbs. Kevin has worked in the horticultural industry for many years and has a passion for not only plants but also birds, mammals and insects. He established his nursery in Heale Garden near Salisbury in 2005 and specialises in ethical growing which means that although he does not aim for organic status his use of pesticides is next to nothing. He has an impressive collection of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, many of which are not readily available in the trade.

Anyone interested in gardening will be most welcome to join us at the Sherfield Village Hall at 7:45pm

St. Leonard’s Extension - Latest.

The PCC has received a grant from the Local Infrastructure Fund, run through the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, which will enable us to complete the entire building including fitting out the kitchen. We are most grateful to the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for this assistance. Work cannot begin yet as the kitchen design will go out to tender. The work to remove the trees at the south of the building will also again go out to tender, as the existing contractor is now unable to fulfil the commitment. The trees need to be removed because they are decayed and dangerous, and there will be an additional benefit of extra light - you can see the shadows on the new oak cross in the picture.

A view from Sherfield Park…….

July and August is usually a quiet time on Sherfield Park with many residents taking their holidays during the long summer school break and the Community Centre providing lots of events for children. This year, however, the activities on Sherfield Park have been overshadowed by the events on Dixon Rd. It began with the residents of Fernhill Place witnessing the illegal felling of some 500 trees, as a result of which Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) quickly requested an injunction to prevent any more damage to the forest site. The new owners then submitted their formal plans for a gypsy encampment comprising three mobile caravan parking pitches together with space for three permanent caravans and three utility buildings. This was followed by the granting of a permanent injunction sought again by BDBC against the new owners forbidding any unlicensed development on the nine-acre forest site.

Sherfield on Loddon Parish Council met on 10th September to discuss the planning application for the development of the forest on Dixon Rd. It agreed unanimously to reject the proposed development. The Parish Council’s decision will now be taken under advisement by the Borough Council’s Development and Control Committee. In addition, it agreed to a request to provide funds for the council to appoint an independent planning consultant to assist the council in its considered response to the planning application. The consultant’s advice will also be made available to the Sherfield Park Community Association and Sherfield Park residents.

At this time no formal date has been set for the planning application to be considered by BDBC. In the meantime, it is important that all residents and local communities affected by the proposed development should ensure they have submitted their comments to BDBC. It is clear that the strength of local opinion plays an important role in deciding such issues.

I hope to be able to provide more details regarding the proposed date for the planning meeting to consider the Dixon Rd application in the November edition of the Loddon Valley Link.

Prayer for the Month

Lord, we give you thanks for faithful people throughout the world who try to live their lives by God-driven values. Help us to follow the example of Christ; to resist the easy way out which the world would often offer; to resist using fickle words and deeds in order to win favour or friendship. Help us to strive for the things that last. Teach us that God’s love and the ways in which we demonstrate it, is the power that really defeats wrongdoing and evil.

Prayer Points for October

Pray for the people of the Middle East, who long for an end to the bitter conflict that overwhelms them day by day.

Pray for world leaders as they struggle to find ways to bring peace to that region.

Pray for our representatives as they move forward in choosing our new Priest in Charge.

Pray for all who give many hours of voluntary work to assist many projects in our communities, especially in this Harvest month those who work with the Basingstoke Foodbank.

Pray for all who live alone. Darkness comes earlier now and evening can seem so long for many. Help us all to be aware of those who live alone; help us to take the initiative in offering a small amount of our time in companionship and chat.

Village Hall Matters

REFURBISHMENT PLANS

The Village Hall Management Committee is delighted to announce that the

application for funding from Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council’s Local

Infrastructure Fund has been successful (subject to certain terms &

conditions). This funding will enable us to refurbish the WC facilities and the

main hall.

The aim of the refurbishment is to bring the WC facilities up-to-date, make

better use of space and increase energy efficiency. Additionally, the main

hall, a beautiful hall with a superb beamed ceiling, is in dire need of

redecoration; the ceiling needs to be repaired and the floor needs attention.

We are in the process of refining detailed specifications for the work and

local trades people will be used where possible. We wish to ensure

minimum disruption to our users and will plan the work accordingly.

PLANNING A CHILDREN'S PARTY?

Why not hire the Liddell Hall? The Liddell Hall (built behind the Main Hall) is

an ideal venue for children's parties with access to the secure garden

overlooking the village green. Our Hall Manager, Loraine Smith, can put you

in touch with companies providing catering, discos, children’s entertainment,

I hope you enjoyed a good summer, which this year is seemingly with us for a while longer. Fingers crossed.

My wife Gail and I attended the new hall dedication service at St Leonard’s Church earlier in the summer. This is a wonderful building and a tribute to the perseverance of all those involved. It was good to see BDBC’s contribution going to such a worthy cause [see p. 38]. As the Bishop of Winchester said in his dedication speech, this is the first loo since the church was built!

Later on in the summer we both celebrated the Last Night of the Proms at the Village Hall which was a great evening, well attended and a patriotic sea of red, white and blue. I am pleased that the village hall will also be receiving funds from BDBC to help with facilities improvement projects.

The Local Plan has had its final review after the last round of consultation and will be sent to the planning inspector on the 9th October. There have been some minor changes along with an updated list of sites with potential for housing (SHLAA version 9) that will also be submitted. It is expected that examination will then take place in early 2015.

I will be attending a briefing by the County Council on plans to reduce existing queues on the A33 and to accommodate the extra 2,000 plus homes due to be built around us. My observation is that whilst the roundabouts from Taylor’s Farm to the Ring Road will be widened and signalised, the 10 miles of single carriageway to the Swallowfield by-pass is, seemingly, not being addressed.

Development Control will have to determine the planning application for the traveller homes in Dixon Road in the near future. Whilst we deplore the actions to tear down the woodland without authority we must judge the application purely on planning grounds. I am fully aware of the overriding view of the community. We do need to be vigilant on any activity at the site and I would encourage contact with BDBC ([email protected]) if we see further activity that appears to contravene the injunction against development.

Hartley Wespall has a new boardwalk over a gap in a wide hedge on the Brenda Parker Way which is considerably under water every winter, and sometimes in spring and autumn as well. The boardwalk was built by local craftsman Robert Burgellis and cost about £2,000. Thanks to the initiative of Councillor Paul Newberry, half the cost was met by a grant from the Borough Council under the Small Grant Scheme for Countryside Access. The local Ramblers generously donated a quarter of the cost and the balance was made up by the village.

When you are told as I was seven years ago that you have Lymphoma Cancer you need your family and friends around you. But you also need Macmillan to support and guide you through the traumatic experience that lies ahead. I had six months of treatment, including chemotherapy, and their expertise and compassion got me through.

They were there for me again last June when the cancer returned and further treatment followed. They were also there for my husband during the final months of his life until he sadly passed away last month.

Please support this coffee morning to help repay Macmillan for all of the magnificent work they put into caring for cancer sufferers and their carers. Bring a cake and enter the competition for the best home-made one, or just come and buy a coffee and a piece of cake to help raise funds for this most worthy cause.

James Christmas Education Foundation

In the eighteenth century the will of Mr James Christmas provided for

this charity to support the education of children who live in the parish

of Sherfield-on-Loddon.

The Foundation has a very small income to distribute at the discretion

of the Trustees. Parents or guardians may make an application on

behalf of any child living in the parish of Sherfield-on-Loddon who has

a particular educational need. Any application must be made in

writing for consideration of the Trustees and addressed to:

Cricket Match

The village match started with a moment of genuine skill when Charles Syclemore flung out his right hand to pluck the ball out of the air to dismiss Martin Dyson caught and bowled – that was their most dangerous batsman back in the pavilion in the second over. Martin did manage to get his revenge when his first ball clean bowled Caspar Mould who had looked set to win the match for Hartley Wespall. Other memorable moments included;

Rupert Fisher swooping to the ground like a 20 year old to field and throw the ball in one swift motion

Arthur Mornington swatting his first ball for six in to Turgis Green (new ball please!)

Nick Brooks-Ward showing his unerring passion for quick singles

But the skippers agreed that the most memorable sight of all was the fair maidens of the villages on the boundary under a kaleidoscope of parasols to shade them from glorious sunshine.

It was great to see so many children on the boundary which is testament to the huge efforts the club has put in to develop a thriving junior section. A very big thank you to Annie and Lucy Fisher and Charlotte Toosey for arranging a tea that would have fed the crowd at Lord’s.

Our regular play reading this year, organised by Chris Horton, was ‘Waiting in the Wings’ by Noel Coward. ‘The Wings’ is a charity home for retired actresses who have fallen on hard times. Once stars, they vie for attention and squabble, and being drama queens they inflate their former importance with grandiose memories. However, there are also firm friendships and loyalties which are put to the test when Lotta Bainbridge arrives. Many years earlier she married the ex-husband of May, one of the residents of the home. At first May refuses to speak to her, but an incident in which a dementia sufferer sets fire to her room brings them together. Written in 1960, some of the issues the play highlighted are still relevant today. There was a comment by one of the actresses about projecting one’s voice when acting – topical today after criticism of the BBC’s adaptation of ‘Jamaica Inn’. There was also intrusion by the press, who managed to infiltrate the home to write a feature about the aged celebrities. Some things never change! In this case though, the journalist has a conscience and raises money for a solarium, having failed to honour an earlier promise to do so.

This play had a large cast and so some of us had to double up, but we got to know the characters and enjoyed the gentle humour.

Our next meeting will be ‘The Positive Outcomes of War’, a talk and discussion about the good things which resulted from war - for example, as we discovered from our recent book reading, the advancement of plastic surgery.

PLAY ON!

Loddon Players are now rehearsing for their autumn production Play On! by Rick Abbott. This is a humorous play about a play. The local theatre group, let’s call them the Noddol Players, are in production for a murder mystery written by a local author who keeps changing the plot and the script. The director can’t hold rehearsals together, lines have not been learnt, the set isn’t finished and people are missing pages of their scripts. We follow the group through a rehearsal, the dress rehearsal and opening night – all with hilarious consequences. Performances will be in Sherfield Village Hall on 27, 28 and 29 November. The box office opens at the end of October.

Glenda Holder opened our September Meeting, Jerusalem was sung and the usual reports given, together with up-coming County events and courses at Denman College.

Val Denny advised those present that the trip to Highcliffe Castle would not be going ahead as there was not enough support. Doris L’Enfant reminded everyone of the Craft Competition in November; entry forms available; and encouraged all to take part. She also threw down a challenge to every member to knit a children’s hat, not to be judged necessarily but to be sent to Zimbabwe for the children there. A discussion took place concerning the archiving of some of our items as we are running out of storage.

We were introduced to our Speaker, Mark Watts, Head of Security at Winchester Prison. He explained that he was in his thirtieth year in the Prison Service and came to Winchester in 1988. His talk was illustrated with pictures of the Prison and prison life. The Prison occupies six acres of land and is of radial design [the traditional design for prisons in which cells radiate from a central point to allow maximum visibility for prison officers]. There has been a prison in Winchester since the thirteenth century, mainly for debtors, but it has been the county jail since 1845 and has housed, among others, Rose West. Public and private hangings have taken place there, some carried out by the famous hangman Albert Pierpoint who, together with his father and uncle, hanged over a thousand prisoners. Mark provided us with lots of facts and figures but despite the serious subject, he included quite a few amusing anecdotes. The vote of thanks was given by Ilene Iles.

We then enjoyed our lovely tea and the raffle was drawn.

Evergreens by May McQueen Our chairperson began with the business part of the meeting by telling us about Glen who is a village agent for Sherfield On Loddon volunteering for Age Concern Hampshire [see p. 38]. There was also a lovely letter from Naomi House and Jack's Place thanking us for our donation and also the money raised from the gifts the members purchased from them. They invited us to come and visit them next year when the refurbishment is completed. Our member Daisy Knight-Sims is in hospital and we send her get well wishes for a speedy recovery. The meeting continued with chair exercises and meditation from Jenny Edwards. The exercises included the ankles, shins, calves, hips, shoulders, back and spine; they help to lubricate the ankle joint, prevent tripping, avoid cramp, strengthen muscles and stabilise the spine. Jenny brought printed sheets of the exercises for everyone so we would be able to remember them. The meeting ended with tea and a raffle. The next meeting on the 6th October is our Harvest Festival.

St Michael’s Hospice

I would like to thank Mary O’Connor and her team of willing volunteers (Jeannette Kirby, Sybil Sumner, Doreen Tosswill and Sylvia Farncombe), who in June conducted a house to house collection in aid of St. Michael’s Hospice. The local community of Sherfield-on-Loddon this year has raised the fantastic amount of £1,005.11, and I would like to say thank you to all the residents who help support this year’s campaign.

As a charity our care is provided to our patients and their families free of charge. In 2014/15 it will cost over £3 million to provide these services to the local community with just 22% funding from the North Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group. We therefore need to generate a net contribution of £2.4 million from our fundraising, retail and lottery activities . Without the generosity and kindness of the local community we would be unable to provide the vital services to patients across North Hampshire.

Another campaign you can support is ‘Make a Will’. From the 3rd to the 14th November, local solicitors will waive their fee for writing or updating a standard will in return for a donation to the Hospice.
