1st quarter report cards go home BEFORE parent teacher conferences! This allows parents AND students to review their progress. Parents and students (grades 2-7) complete reflection sheet.

Reflection sheet.. 1. As you review your child’s report card and progress this quarter, about what are you most pleased?

2. What questions or concerns do you have about your child’s learning?

3. What’s a hope you have for your child’s learning/experience at school this year?

Before the meeting, ask your child if there is anything that he/she would like you to discuss with the teacher.

If your child is struggling, here are some questions to ask:

Page 11: October 2013 Principal-Parent Breakfast. Parent Teacher Conferences!

What special help can the school offer my child to get him or her on track academically as quickly as possible?

With the teacher, list two or three concrete actions to do every day. It may be as simple as a change in the evening schedule so that the child has 15 to 20 minutes of the parent's time to read together or work on math homework.

If your child is doing well academically, here are some questions to ask:

Page 15: October 2013 Principal-Parent Breakfast. Parent Teacher Conferences!

What can I do at home to enhance my child's educational experience?

Page 16: October 2013 Principal-Parent Breakfast. Parent Teacher Conferences!

What is done to challenge my child academically?

Page 17: October 2013 Principal-Parent Breakfast. Parent Teacher Conferences!

What do you see as my child's strengths and weaknesses?

Page 18: October 2013 Principal-Parent Breakfast. Parent Teacher Conferences!

Could you tell me about my child's work ethic, relations with other children, behavior in class and attitude toward learning?

What does my child do that surprises you? Very often this question can reveal to parents what expectations the teacher has for the child. Sometimes a child will behave quite differently at school than at home, so the parent may be surprised, as well.

What is my child reluctant to do? The question may encourage the teacher to talk to the parent about the child's academic and social preferences.

What is a goal you would like to see my child achieve? Even well- behaved and high-achieving children may benefit from setting goals in areas that need improvement or in which they might excel.

In general, remember that teachers often hear only negative comments. Be sure to try to offer a compliment, a thank-you, etc. to let the teacher know you appreciate what they are trying to do to help your child!
